    gro+ our energy setor to math our needs and be as environmentally attuned as possible#

    ountry has a great need for a modern energy infrastruture

    and it is inumbant upon us to design) develop and maintain

    an infrastruture that is sustainable and one that +ill help to

    ensure a future in +hih energy is more reliable and affordble#

    As the ost of eletriity goes up) it beomes more diffiult for

    (ahamians to live +ith the reature omforts that +e have

    gro+n austomed to# High eletriity osts also make doing

    business in /he (ahamas prohibitive# We must begin to

    mitigate these osts by reating an energy setor that is not

    energy soures to be fed into the national grid#

    9ot only +ill this aid in reduing the ost of energy to onsumers and reduing the demand for

    n the past t+o years the government has implemented poliies and legislation to further the

    proess of reform +ithin the energy setor# /he government established an Energy /ask %ore +hih

    +as harged +ith advising on solutions to reduing the high ost of eletriity# We eliminated the

    e-ise ta- on fuel used by (E, and +e eliminated tariffs on inverters for solar panels and !ED

    applianes # With the assistane of the nterAmerian Development (ank D( and the 8lobal

    Environment %aility 8E%) the government +as also able to advane t+o pilot proFets devised to

    ollet data on rene+able energy tehnologies# /he first proFet provided for the installation of 

    solar +ater heaters and the seond proFet for the installation of photovoltai systems in (ahamian

    homes#

    /he release of this doument represents a signifiant step on our ontinuing Fourney of energy

    setor reform# As +e move for+ard +ith this plan the ultimate goal is to provide the (ahamian

    people +ith a reliable) affordable) modern and environmentally sustainable energy setor# t is

    envisioned that the implementation of our plan +ill provide our people +ith entrepreneurial

    and the global emphasis on environmental issues and limate hange have refoused energy

    supply seurity and environmental sustainability agendas for both energy importdependent

    and energy e-porting eonomies# Unertainty of oil pries is prompting many eonomies to

    rethink the fundamentals of energy poliies# Aess to energy at affordable pries has thus

    beome a top priority of the energy seurity agendas of almost all oil importdependenteonomies# %urthermore) a heightened fous on limate hange has made the inreased use of 

    rene+able energy a priority in order to redue the emissions of greenhouse gases and

    therefore ontribute to limate hange mitigation#

    /he drive therefore to promulgate a national energy poliy for /he (ahamas is triggered by

    fators suh as the onern about esalating oil pries) the impat of energy prie inrease on

    inflation) balane of payments and eonomi gro+th and onern about the environment and

    limate hange# $erhaps even more importantly) there also is the politial +ill to transform the

    ountry into one that is less dependent on imported fossil fuels and more reliant on sustainable

    energy soures as +ell as one that has a dynami regulatory and poliy frame+ork to failitate

    the introdution of ne+ soures of energy thereby advaning energy seurity#

    seek to inrease the effiieny of the energy setor in the generation) transmission and

    distribution of eletriity the prodution and dissemination of +ater the use of energy in the

    transport setor and the onsumption of eletriity by industrial) ommerial and residential

    effiiently as possible#
