BLGS Monthly Meeting Minutes

May 13, 2017

Opening

The regular meeting of the Badger Lapidary and

Geological Society was called to order at 10:20am on

May 13, 2017 in Monroe First National Bank by Brian

Green.

Approval of Minutes

The minutes of the previous meeting were unanimously

approved as distributed.

Open Issues (Old Business)

Show & demonstrating members vs. club sales

members

The topic of fees charged to members who

participate on any extension of the club sales table

(10% member charge or Dealer fee or no fee as

demonstrator) was brought into question at the

April meeting and was discussed in length. In

summary, it was determined that members that

demonstrate are provided one table and are not

charged a fee. It was also determined that

members participating in the club sales will donate

10% of sales to the club.

Trailer – Need to discuss maintenance

Estimates needed – who will procure those?

Deb/Don suggested if they are willing

and able

Leak in Roof – Would it be resolved by repairing

roof?

Discussion – Mobile home roof coating

will work to seal

Should we tarp it to protect it from the

weather? Club will consider it

Needs spare tire – Club to purchase spare tire

and rim.

Motion and second to purchase spare

tire and rim.

Discussion – couple of places to

purchase?

Friendly amendment. Separate motion

on tire and rim

All in favor for tire – unanimous.

Teri motions to investigate procurement

of rim, whether to purchase or locate a

used rim, including the size of it, tire

size, and number of lugs. Members

voted – all were in favor

Lights –

Short in wiring. Blows fuses. Wiring is

within trailer. Road ready requires all

lights to be working including clearance

lights. Brake lights and turn lights work.

Running lights do not.

Jordan Marche made Move to

investigate effort to repair wiring?

Brian will take that due-out

Floor bows – This needs to be investigated to

assure there is not a bracket giving loose.

New Business

New business related to trailer –

Investing to repair trailer –

Still viable to have and needs to be

maintained -All agree

We need to research storing the trailer and

moving closer to Janesville. Possibly renting a

storage facility. Wherever stored, we need to

assure trailer can be hauled

All members should bring ideas to

Secretary for collecting options, and at

September meeting we will look to

make a decision on the storing of the

trailer.

If renting a space for trailer (or

contents), should retain trailer to assure

there is a method to move groups show

material

Additional option is to have the trailer

stored at a farm within a machine shed

for a nominal yearly fee. As a 501C, the

profit for storage could be itemized for

Page 4: THE BADGER DIGGIN’S · shelter, playground and nature trails. Hope you can make it! Laurie Trocke Newsletter Editor THE BADGER DIGGIN’S The Badger Lapidary and Geological Society,

whomever would store. This will be

vetted.

Who will be bringing trailer from Dodgeville?

It will be brought to the picnic so all

members can weigh and assess the

trailers maintenance needs

Loaded weight of a trailer may require a plate

on the trailer.

We need to research. Tamara will

research this.

Club Picnic

Need location – Cadas Springs suggested, which

is west of Monroe. This park has a pavilion.

Another location is Traxler Park in Janesville.

Motion made to use Cadas Springs and if

pavilion can be reserved. We have never

established a club budget for renting pavilions.

Second Saturday suggested as picnic date.

Meet between 10-11 and eat lunch at noon

Jordan will field reserving the pavilion at Cadas

Springs.

We may need to bring grills.

Meat will be provided by club and members

are requested to bring chairs, dish to share,

beverages dishes, and utensils.

Bring trailer to picnic

Multi-club picnic still in the

works. Jack is working on this and it would

not be until August or September.

Show

We will vote for 2018 show in Janesville in

September. Rental fee for Janesville is 1500 for

entire weekend and setup time on Friday.

Survey to show vendors will be sent before

September to solicit satisfaction of location and

show for any improvements that can be made

and potential loss of a vendor if Janesville

location changes.

Vendor space fees will increase for 2018 due to

the increase in the rental of the Craig Center.

Agenda for Next Meeting

Club picnic June 10th!!

Adjournment

Meeting was adjourned at Meeting adjourned at 11:50

by Brian Green to enjoy Marv Hanners presentation of

how to properly clean minerals. The next general

meeting will be the club picnic to be held at 10-11 on ,

New Digital Portal to Incorporate Specimens from UW-Madison Geology

Museum [contributed by Jordan Marché] A new digital portal is being developed that will unite a

variety of natural history collections housed in various

academic departments and museums across the University

of Wisconsin campus. When completed, the information

contained will be publicly available to constituents

throughout the state and beyond for research, teaching,

and outreach.

Termed the Wisconsin Integrated Biodiversity, Human,

and Environmental Specimen Portal, this initiative will

serve as a gateway to more than 11 million specimens

from the departments of anthropology, botany,

entomology, geoscience, and zoology. Such specimen

collections are an important part of ‘big data’ repositories

of immense value to the scientific community across

Wisconsin and elsewhere.

This project will fund a small team to assist campus

museums with establishing or improving their database

infrastructures, and to design an aggregator tool that will

be used to connect them all in an integrated fashion,

allowing access to multiple collections and enabling

discovery of shared patterns among previously unrelated

organisms or objects. It should catalyze new research on

global change related to plants, animals, insects,

paleontological specimens, rocks and minerals, and

human activities/artifacts. UW professor of botany Dr.

Kenneth Cameron has been named principal investigator,

while UW Geology Museum director Richard Slaughter has

been named among the list of six co-principal

investigators. This highly-competitive project is part of the

UW2020 research initiative designed to stimulate and

support groundbreaking research at UW-Madison over the

next five years. It has been underwritten in the first year

by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF).
