Announcements From Ashton Director of Fitness & Wellness
During the month of March, The
Cypress of Charlotte will be focusing
on educating our residents on fall
prevention and providing special
balance training classes, programs,
and events. The third annual Balance
Challenge will take place all month
long. You can register for the
Balance Challenge at the Balance
Fair, which is Wednesday, March 2nd
from 1:00-2:00pm in the Community
Hall. Not convinced? NIFS Balance Challenge
participants reported an 11% improvement in their
self assessment of balance over the last three years.
The fear of falling is a risk factor for falls in older
adults, so the confidence gained by participants alone
is beneficial!

“A Changing America: The Challenges of Religious
Diversity” Wednesday, March 9, 2016
7:30 pm
Community Hall
This presentation will focus
on major trends impacting the
American cultural landscape,
bringing change to its "worldview." It
has been said that we are in a war of
ideas. American culture is undergoing
paradigm change. How? What impact is
ISIS ideology having upon the global
conversation? What does it mean to be
an "American?"
Do we have
shared ideals in a
common value
system? Hindus,
Buddhists, and
Muslims now live within the boundaries
of Jewish and Christian neighborhoods.
Religious diversity has become a fact of
ordinary life, changing American
ideology. The Cypress community is
invited to discuss American readiness to
accommodate the wider range of
religious diversity that is fast becoming
a reality.

A Concert in Memory of the Late Jim & Betty Nisbet
Lyricist, Lucinda Lucas Wednesday, March 16, 2016
7:30 pm
Community Hall
This concert is to honor Lucinda’s
parents, former Cypress members,
Jim and Betty Nisbet. She likes to
think that her music makes you think. She is a
lyricist and she researches her subject matter
and then weaves her stories into songs that
bring joy, humor and sometimes sadness.
Listeners can always find something to relate
to when listening to one of Lucinda’s songs.
Her style ranges from folk and Americana to
alternative, rock and country.
Her mother, Betty Nisbet, realized there was some musical DNA
swimming around in her veins when she reached up to the piano and picked
out The Battle Hymn of the Republic by ear. She was about 4 or 5 at the
time. She has been playing music since that tender age. She began writing
songs in middle school and high school and attributes her musical and
songwriting knowledge to: genes (musical ability), Shakespeare (meter),
The Beatles (harmony) and Dr. Seuss (rhyme).
After she put the guitar down for about 20 years – job, home, children,
Lucinda picked it up again and discovered she had more song material!
She’s written songs about loss, love, loneliness, about jerks, jackasses and
Jesus. Now, Lucinda just wants to write, perform and share her music with
those who want to listen. Come hear original songs written by Lucinda,
some of which are about her parents, Jim and Betty.

10:00 am - 1:00 pm in the Art Room
All levels are welcome and encouraged to participate, even beginners!
We will have class on Wednesdays March 2, 16 and

pm in the Art Room.
Bruce Chandler is a seasoned teacher, having taught classes for
forty seven years. She is a go with the flow teacher in that students
may paint in their preferred medium in a class with different
mediums being used. She feels that students learn more in such
classes with the opportunity of seeing how various mediums are used.
Watercolors will be utilized in the beginning for ease of mobility as
this instructor will bring supplies to utilize while being introduced to some of
the basics that apply to all mediums. At the point that a student has a medium
preference, then the student will purchase supplies and will begin his or her
individual journey. *Sign up under #2 in the Activities book.

11:45 am - 1:00 pm in the Garden Room
Topic: Topic: Diabetes and the “Diabetic Diet”
Join us in March to discuss Diabetes, the signs and symptoms of
diabetes and the recommended dietary approaches for good blood sugar
control. Many doctors will tell you to avoid white bread, white potatoes,
white rice and sugar; but the diabetic meal plan is more complex than just removing
“white” foods from your diet. This program will also be beneficial to folks who have
been recently diagnosed with “pre-diabetes.” Of course weight loss and exercise will
be discussed as both are excellent approaches to lowering blood sugar levels.
*Please call Kathy Weidner to reserve a place at the table! 704-714-5551
