THE BACCALAUREATE SERVICE

Opening Voluntary “O God, Beyond All Praising” Charles Callahan Michael Morgan, organ

Words of Welcome Leanne Van Dyk * Call to Worship Hannah Grace Sucharitha Injamuri, Ellen Rae Gallow, Wanda Denise Ackles One: Alleluia! Blessed be God, who creates out of nothing, who shapes beauty out of chaos, breathes life into dust, delights in designing difference and embodies in each human the image of our Maker. All: (echo the choir) Alleluia, Alleluia. (x3) Allelu, Alleluia. One: Alleluia! Blessed be God who gives each person a purpose: calling us for our energy and our wisdom; who refuses to discriminate, affirming forgotten worth, identifying hidden potential, recognizing the gifts that each one brings. All: Alleluia, Alleluia. (x3) Allelu, Alleluia. One: Alleluia! Blessed be God who satisfies our needs in parched places, making us like watered gardens; who rebuilds foundations, guiding our steps for generations; who calls us outside of ourselves to be repairers of the breech and restorers of streets to live in. All: Alleluia, Alleluia. (x3) Allelu, Alleluia. One: Blessed be the Maker, the Son and the Spirit in our lives and our worship. Alleluia! All: Amen.

Merciful God, You have told us what kind of worship you value: to let the oppressed go free, to break every yoke, to offer food to the hungry, and to satisfy the needs of the afflicted, but we fear what this worship will cost us. Forgive us for substituting a humble pose, a garment of sackcloth, a covering of ashes, a carefully worded creed, for living into your vision of justice. Forgive us, that we may serve you with whole hearts.

CHRISTOPHER A. HENRY ’07 Chris Henry grew up in North Carolina, the son of a Presbyterian minister and a clinical psychologist. Chris is a graduate of Duke University (BA in Religion) and Columbia Theological Seminary, where he received five honors including the Wilds Book Prize, Columbia’s highest academic honor, and the Harvard A. Anderson Graduate Fellowship. Chris’ work has been published in the Christian Century, Feasting on the Gospels, Journal for Preachers, and Covenant Connection. He has been a featured preacher on Day1 Radio, as well as at many Presbyterian and ecumenical events. His interest in learning from and serving others has taken him on spiritual pilgrimages and ministry partnership trips to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Peru, and the Iona Community in Scotland. Chris has served the wider church in a variety of capacities, currently serving as a member of the Board of Trustees at Columbia Theological Seminary, the advisory board at NEXT Church, and on the board of the Alliance for Christian Media. Chris began his ministry as Senior Pastor at Second Presbyterian Church in June of 2018, following eleven years of ministry in Atlanta, Georgia. Second Church is a congregation of 3500 members with a storied tradition of ministry and leadership in Indianapolis, and a bright and hopeful future. Chris has a passion for preaching that both inspires and challenges all to faithful living in complex times. He believes that churches have the capacity and the mandate to be places of transformation in the lives of individuals, the surrounding community, and the world. Chris is married to the Rev. Sara Hayden ’08, who serves as Director of Apprenticeships, Residencies and Leadership Cohorts for the 1001 New Worshipping Communities movement of the PC(USA). Sara and Chris met as students at Columbia Seminary and were married in 2008. They are the parents of two sons, Samuel (5) and Benjamin (2). Chris loves running long distances, grilling on the Big Green Egg, watching Duke basketball, reading biographies and novels, traveling (especially to western Colorado in the Fall), and spending time with Sara, Samuel, and Ben.
