Atranscript includesthetitle, gradeearnedandcreditawardedforeachclasstakenandthescoreachievedoneveryNewYorkStateRegentsExamtakenas well as standardized test scores (i.e. SATs, SAT IIs andACTs). The grades on a transcript are usually averaged toproduceasinglenumber, whichisreferredtoasacumulativeGrade Point Average (GPA). However, BSGE does notcalculate GPAs. This promotes the evaluation of BSGEstudentsbycollegeadmissionsofficersonfactorsinadditionto class grades. Though colleges and universities pay closeattentiontothegradesyouearnedinyoujunioryearandthefirstsemesterofyoursenioryear, your freshmangradesarealso used in establishing an image of you as a potentialcollegestudent. Ifyoutankfreshmanyear, itwillfollowyoufor the next three years. This includes art class, gym class, music class and anything for which you receive a grade.Colleges expect your grades to be consistent or improve. Ifyou received 6s in sophomore year, and 3s in senior year, they may conclude that you are a capable student whobecamelazy.Highschoolgraduationrequirementsvaryfromschooltoschool.Moststudentshavetheopportunitytotakemore classes (or credits) then are required to graduate. Ifyou take only theminimum, collegeswill conclude that youare doing the least you must do to earn a high schooldiploma. The best high schooltranscript willshowconsistent grades in a challenging course program withchallenging classes. IB courses,AP classes or advanced/honors classes impress colleges and tells them that you arereadyforcollege-levelwork.

Teacher Recommendation: Most college applicationsrequest two or three recommendation letters from peoplewho know you in and out of the classroom. It is yourresponsibility to find appropriate people to write theseletters on your behalf. You also need to give them enoughtime to write a thoughtful letter. Start by discussing theprocess, and possible candidates, with your counselor andfamily. More often than not, colleges request letters ofrecommendation froman academic teacher (sometimes in aspecificsubject),yourschoolcounselororboth.Ifthecollegerequestsaletterfromanacademicteacher, andthesubjectisnot specified, yourEnglish, scienceormath teachersusuallymakegoodcandidates.Askoneofyourteachersfromjunioryear,oracurrentteacherwhohasknownyoulongenoughtoformanopinionofyourpotential.Itisbestnottogobacktoofar; colleges want current perspectives on their potentialcandidates.Mid-Year/Final Report: Themid-year report is an updatedsecondary school form and updated transcript that includesthe grades fromyour first semester of senior year.
