General objectives

05/06/2018 3

Achieve favourable techno-economic and environmental performances

for the production of 2G ethanol in small-scale industrial plants.

Identify feedstock with sustainable and reliable supply conditions for the

evaluation and selection of business cases in Latin America and Europe.

Provide all the necessary data for the selected business cases so that

the new technology can be realistically evaluated and the project scaled-

up to demonstration level.

New pretreatment process of the biomass

• Performance of pretreatment and enzymatic impregnation / pre-hydrolysis in one reactor.

• All the operations necessary to increase the access of the hydrolytic enzymes to the carbohydrates

(deconstruction, defibrillation and depolymerisation) and to start the solubilisation of sugars are carried out

in a twin-screw extruder.

BABET-REAL5 new business model

2G Ethanol business models under development in the world

Big size production plants: 50-100,000 m3 Ethanol

Requires: 200-350,000 t dry biomass in small catchment areas

High investment: 100-200 M€ or plus

Not applicable to regions not able to supply and concentrate such quantity of biomass

Big investment difficult to achieve without significant public funding support

Find solutions

for regions that cannot provide such high amounts of concentrated biomasses

for producing ethanol without needing major public funding

Suitable for rural development, decentralized energy production & the autonomy of the territories

New approach of business models based on small-size industrial plants economically

viable from 30,000 t/year DM biomass collected in small catchment area

(10,000 m3 Ethanol)
