Where – does it come from?
“Established in August 2012, the Australian Government Linked Data Working Group exists with support from the Department of
Communications, Data Policy Branch, responsible for the coordination of big and spatial data policy and the Department of
Finance, Online Services Branch, responsible for open data policy. Its participating members have been drafting policy and technical
guidance on the implementation of Linked Data for the Australian Government.
- LD WG’s Terms of Reference, July, 2015
• Originally convened by Andrew Woolf, Bureau of Meteorology, and Armin Haller, CSIRO
• The Group’s sponsors in Dept.s Finance & Comm.s will become part of the Dept. of Prime Minister and Cabinet in late 2015

What – do they do?
What is Linked Data?
• a set of practices for publishing and linking structured data on the Internet
• using terms that all have explicit, formal definitions online
LD WG’s role:
• Providing guidance, standards and technical mechanisms for provision of Australian Government Data as ‘Linked Data’
• ensure individuals, businesses and organisations can benefit from the efficiency, precision and scalability this offers

What – do they do?
3 subcommittees:
1. Visibility promote the understanding of Linked Data throughout Australian Government
2. Recommendations guidance on standards, protocols, ontologies and formalisms that enable effective Linked Data systems across government bodies
3. Solutionsproviding demonstrations of members’ Linked Data tools and systems to each other and to the government
providing demonstrations of Linked Data infrastructure for Government

What – do they do?
To date:
• “Guidelines for Publishing Linked Data”• The Guidelines provide a set of general principles government bodies can follow to help them
define and manage URIs for ‘Linked Datasets’ and the resources described within. – AGLDWG (2014) URI Guidelines for publishing linked datasets on data.gov.au v0.1. Online at https://github.com/AGLDWG/TR/wiki/URI-
Guidelines-for-publishing-linked-datasets-on-data.gov.au-v0.1. Accessed 2015-10-13.
• Dataset ontology• Represented the metadata associated with datasets stored within the data.gov.au repository
– https://github.com/AGLDWG/TR/blob/master/government.ttl
• URI management• Using the subdomain environment.data.gov.au, the WG has shown complex, best practice URI systems
– https://environment.data.gov.au
• Fostered the Australian LD community• Much of Australia’s Linked Data work to date has been done by LD WG members. Now we share our
ideas

How – do they do it?
• Monthly WG meetings • At the BoM in Canberra, with Videoconference for remote participation
• Monthly-ish subgroup meetings
• Additional workshops
• Piggy-back on data.gov.au things

Why – should you care?
(Nick’s opinions)
• LD is the machine-readable web (of data)• Not just the Google-readable web
• Actually, Google is doing this too…
• LD is our best guess as to how to publish once, use everywhere• Need to common practices to de-duplicate data publication
• Consider who publishes and uses the list of government organisations…
• Data production is far outstripping data understanding
• Single metadata schemes won’t cut it – we need related (linked?) data and data models
• Get with the program: Linked Data Rocks!

What – they want to do next
(Nick’s personal take on 2016)• Complete the data.gov.au ontology
• align with W3C’s Data on the Web Best Practices Working Group’s recommendations & other, well known ontologies
• Extend URI management • from environment.data.gov.au to *.data.gov.au
• Present 1 or more generically useful, authoritative, Linked Data datasets • list of government organisations, Dept. of Finance?
• Advise cross-department initiatives on the use of LD• See wider attendance
• ANDS, Unis etc. Esp. Health sector (Personally Controlled eHealth Record)
• Consider working with States
