Epistle To A LadyNothing so true as what you once let fall,Most Women have no Characters at all.Matter too soft a lasting mark to bear,And best distinguish'd by black, brown, or fair. How many pictures of one Nymph we view,All how unlike each other, all how true!Arcadia's Countess, here, in ermin'd pride,Is there, Pastora by a fountain side. Here Fannia, lerring on her own good man,And there, a naked Leda with a Swan.Let then the Fair one beautifully cry,In Magdalen's loose hair and lifted eye,Or drest in smiles of sweet Cecilia Shine,With simp'ring Angels, Palms, and Harps divine;Whether the Charmer sinner it, or saint it,If fllay grows romantic, I must paint it.

An Account of the Greatest English PoetsLong had our dull forefathers slept supine

Nor felt the raptures of the tuneful NineTill Chaucer first, the merry bard, aroseAnd many a story told in rhyme and proseBut age has rusted what the poet writ,Worn out his language, and obscur'd his wit;In vain he jests in his unpolish'd strain,And tries to make his readers laugh, in vain.Old Spenser next, warm'd with poetic rage,

In ancient tales amus'd a barb'rous age; An age that yet uncultivate and rude, Where'er the poet's fancy led, pursu'd Through pathless fields, and unfrequented floods, To dens of dragons and enchanted woods. But now the mystic tale, that pleas'd of yore, Can charm an understanding age no more; The long-spun allegories fulsome grow. While the dull moral lies too plain below. We view well-pleas'd at distance all the sights Of arms and palfreys, battles, fields, and fights, And damsels in distress, and courteous knights; But when we look too near, the shades decay, And all the pleasing landscape fades away.

Marriage A-La-Mode (1661)

Why should a foolish marriage vow,Which long ago was made,Oblige us to each other nowWhen passion is decay'd?We lov'd, and we lov'd, as long as we could,Till our love was lov'd out in us both:But our marriage is dead, when the pleasure is fled:'Twas pleasure first made it an oath.

If I have pleasures for a friend,And farther love in store,What wrong has he whose joys did end,And who could give no more?'Tis a madness that he should be jealous of me,Or that I should bar him of another:For all we can gain is to give our selves pain,When neither can hinder the other.
