VFC News

News from VFC

When our Chief Flight Instructor Graham Palmer started working at VFC 25 years ago, one of our Flight Instructors was Sean Croft (The father of Patrick currently working in Dispatch, and Nick who works on the line). Sean now works for Emirates Airlines and was recently promoted to Captain on the A380. Here he is as Captain on EK215 “Super” flying overhead from DXB to LAX, recently. He called down on the Club frequency 129.05 Mhz to say hello. Patrick and Nick’s great-grandfather was also one of the founding members of VFC.

VFC will be celebrating 70 years of flight training next year, and in that time, we have seen countless students, staff and alumni enjoy successful careers in airlines around the world. If you’re a former VFCer in the skies overhead, or taxiing past the club, give us a call on 129.05 to say hello. We’re al-ways happy to hear from you!

COMING SOON TO VFC!“Landing a Job in Aviation: Planning Your Route From Student to Commercial Airline Pilot.” This seminar, taught by a commercial airline pilot is coming to the Victoria Flying Club in the

fall of 2015. It’s a great opportunity to learn and gain an edge in a competive industry.Watch for more details next month!

VFC News

The Victoria Flying Club is pleased to welcome back for a second year, The Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona. The B-17G WWII Bomber, “Sentimental Journey” will be landing at the Victoria Flying Club on 10 August 2015, arriving at approximately noon. The Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona, is a non-profit organization, and a flying museum staffed by volunteers, sending their aircraft on tour every summer to reconnect the public with our living history and show our veterans we haven’t forgotten their sacrifices. “Sentimental Journey” will be at the Victoria Flying Club 10 August through 16 August on display from 9:00 AM-6:00 PM for the public to tour through the aircraft, enjoy a flight, breathe in the history and talk with volunteers to learn about the unique role these aircraft served in military history.

The B-17 was first rolled out in 1935 at the Boeing plant in Seattle, WA. One local reporter exclaimed, “It’s a regular fortress.”. Thus the B-17 became known as the Flying Fortress. She flew in both the European and Asian theatres during WWII. Her crew of 10 men experienced bone-chilling temperatures in an unpressurized plane. Temperatures often dropped to -60 degrees. Of the 12,731 B-17’s made only half survived through WWII. Today only

about 50 still exist worldwide and only about 10 still fly. Airbase Arizona is fortunate to be the proud owners of one them.

A unique opportunity that we able to offer the public are rides, an experience of a lifetime, putting folks right in the seat of history! These Living History Flight Experiences ($530 CDN radio room/Waist Gunner or $1060 CDN Navigator/Bombardier) serve to keep our aircraft flying and spreading the word across the country of our history. Cockpit tours are $6.50 per person or $12.50 per family. Children under five are free.

Victoria Flying Club President, Ramona Reynolds, shares the excitement of the B-17 visit. “All of us at the Victoria Flying Club welcome everyone to join us in experiencing this magnificent piece of aviation history. The B-17 holds a special place in

the hearts of many men and women, and their families, who served in the Air Force during WWII including the Women’s Air Force Service Pilots. From August 10-16, this is going to be the place to be for anyone who loves airplanes and airplane people.”

The CAF was founded to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft which were flown by all military services of the United States, and aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations of Americans. More than just a collection of airworthy warplanes from the past, the CAF’s fleet of historic aircraft, known as the CAF Ghost Squadron, recreate, remind and reinforce the lessons from the defining moments in the American military aviation history.

COPA Flight 6

Submitted by: Eleanor Eastick

The July 7th COPA meeting was very well attended with about 30 people showing up, the largest number since the good old days in the Catalina Grill last year. The meeting was hosted by Bryan Webster, our western COPA representative, and it was highly appropriate for Bry the Dunker Guy to introduce Tony McCormick who recently had a dunking in Lake Cowichan owing to a float failure in a Glastar amphib. Tony

is a member of Flight 6 who had fortunately taken Bryan`s course and was able successfully to get himself and his passenger out of the overturned plane. Another one saved. There was also a lively discussion on ForeFlight and all the new capabilities that are available to pilots. It was a great meeting all round! There will be no COPA meeting in August, owing to so many people off on vacation. The next COPA meeting will be September 1st at 7 PM at the VFC Lounge. Our Flight Captain has arranged for a tour of the

443 Squadron. It promises to be an interesting evening. For more information contact [email protected]. You don’t have to be a member to participate.

Note: The great folks from COPA Flight 6 also spearhead the Fly Out Bug movement. These guys plan some incredibly fun and interesting day trips. Fly Outs are a great way to meet other pilots, and experience new places where you might not otherwise visit. For all the latest Fly Out Bug news, please email:[email protected]!

Bravo Zulu is a naval signal, typically conveyed by flaghoist or voice radio, meaning “Well Done”. I often heard Al, a 32-year Naval veteran give a “Bravo Zulu” to others in recognition of their achievements. He was always the first to give credit where it was due.

Al’s whole life and career merit a Bravo Zulu, well done, thumbs up. Never have I known a kinder man, thorough in everything he did, thoughtful, modest, gener-ous and always in good humour. A smooth and accomplished pi-lot, Al had a CPL and was briefly a flight instructor but preferred flying just for fun. He was also an AME who would occasionally fill in at the Club on weekends back in the 1980s and, in fact,

maintained his AME licence until a year or so ago. He was a frequent contributor to The Patri-cian with anecdotes and photos from a lifetime of personally chronicling aviation. Al’s fascination with aviation never faltered throughout his life even when illness began to overtake him and he could no longer fly his beautiful red Alon A2 Aircoupe, GJNW. My favourite memories are of flying with Al in JNW to Fri-day Harbor, to see Ernie’s, the little café named for Ernest K. Gann, writer of The High and the Mighty, Fate is the Hunter and many more well known aviation novels. Al and his wife, Violet had actually met Mr. Gann himself at KFHR many years

before and had got his auto-graph. In 2011, I was privileged to accompany Al in the Alon to the Abbotsford Air Show, where the classic little plane was part of the static display. What a thrill to fly in with him, park on the runway and have VIP tickets to the events. That was an unfor-gettable day for me.

Al will forever be a VIP in my life; I will always miss him; he was a super friend along with Vi who never failed to be supportive in all Al’s endeavours. He will be deeply missed by the aviation community as well as by his chil-dren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bravo Zulu Al, from all of us who loved you. Blue Skies Eternally!

If you are interested in developing, refining or participating in our mentorship program we’d sure love to hear from you. Please email Ramona Reynolds for more information:

[email protected].

mentor [men-tawr] noun1. a wise and trusted counselor or teacher.2. an influential senior sponsor or supporter.

VFC MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Think about where you are in your life. Now think about the people who helped get you there. Chances are you owe some of your success to the involvement of a teacher, friend, colleague, relative, or acquain-tance who had an impact on your life. These people, your mentors, may not even know they are on your list. But there influence has a lasting impact.

Last month, Ramona Reynolds wrote an article about the amaz-ing mentorship program that she participates in. We would like to build something similar here at the Victoria Flying Club. More details will be available soon as the program takes shape, but in the meantime, we are looking for three types of people to partici-pate in the launch of the VFC

Mentorship Program. (Note: if you’re reading this page, you’re at least one of these three types of people!)

1. Student Pilots: Whether you are working on a PPL with plans to fly recreationally, or you are making the first steps towards a career in aviation, this program is for you.

2. Recreational Pilots: You’ve been flying for years and you love it just as much today as the day you did your first flight - maybe even more! You’ve got lots of great stories, and you’ve certainly learned a few things along the way.

3. Professional Pilots: Mede-vac, cargo, charter, corporate, or airline. If flying buys your

groceries, you’re a professional pilot. This is a great opportunity to share your industry experi-ence and knowledge.

If you’re interested in getting to know other pilots, sharing your experiences, and learning from each other, then the VFC Men-torship Program is the place you need to be. VFC pilots are known to be extremely success-ful and extremely safe. We want to build on that reputation by providing a structured opportuni-ty to form relationships between different generations and types of pilots.

Please consider how you can participate, and what you can bring to the table!

FleetCaptain Corner

The Flight Authority FormThe Pilot’s Authority to Operate a VFC Aircraft

What does this mean to you?You are the captain of your ßight. FleetCaptain Þnds the data and does the calculations, saving you time and effort. You can verify it, use it and get on with enjoying your day. If youÕd like the practice you can do your own W&B calculation and search the journey logbook. If you Þnd something doesnÕt match, you have a basis for comparison and can Þnd the source of any error. The Flight Authority form helps make pre-ßight planning as quick, effective and safe as it can be.

YouÕve seen FleetCaptain Corner articles for a few months now and have seen me describe some cool things the system does. I admit it, IÕm obsessed with this stuff - helping make us safe and efÞcient, helping make us the best ßying club we can be. This monthÕs article provides a brief overview of how weÕre taking airline style data presentation to the clubÕs rental operation.

A summary of key ßight dataWhat is the weight and balance status of our proposed ßight? You can see the planeÕs basic empty weight (BEW), its zero fuel weight (ZFW) and takeoff weight (TOW) displayed on the chart. Why display it this way? Because it depicts how our load affects our aircraft today. The BEW is an important parameter of any plane. The ZFW is what you get when you add the passengers and baggage but donÕt yet add any fuel. The TOW is what you get when the fuel is added and the ground burn is subtracted. By examining the TOW-ZFW line, you can see how the planeÕs W&B situation will change during the ßight as fuel is consumed. The magenta diamond, if present, identiÞes the point where the plane transitions from the normal to the utility category. Sometimes that indicates when you enter the utility category after some fuel is burned. Sometimes, as in the example to the right, the diamond depicts the W&B point at the maximum fuel you can accept and still be in the utility category given the proposed cabin load. That maximum utility category fuel is 38 gallons in the example and is described as ÒNo spins above this fuelÓ.

The minimum departure fuel and the maximum allowable fuel deÞne the safe fuel limits for ßight. When you dip the tanks, you need only determine if youÕre between the limits and if so, you know you have enough fuel for the stated mission and will be operating within the W&B envelope.

Upcoming maintenance times are important. You can see when scheduled and special maintenance items are next due, and see if there are calendar-based maintenance items coming up that might impact an extended rental.

When is the end of civil twilight today, what defects does the plane have and what are the associated restrictions? These are all summarized on the right side of the form.

If you take the plane for a multi-leg ßight you know the starting point and have a good basis for understanding what the next leg requires. If youÕre a student pilot, you acknowledge the intended exercises and your instructor authorizes it by initialing the boxes provided.
