Systematic Theology 06.06.12Leviticus 16

never achieve.
Atonement
Atonement: “to cover”
• Leviticus 16 - The Day of Atonement• Bull - sin offering. Blood sprinkled on
the “Mercy Seat” above the Ark of theCovenant (16:14)
• Ram 1 - burnt offering• Ram 2 - scapegoat
“The emphasis of the NewTestament, however, is thatChrist died a substitutionarydeath on behalf of sinners.”
- Paul Enns– The Moody Handbook of Theology (Chicago, Ill:
Moody Press, 1997), 232.
Theories of the Atonement
1) Substitution: stepping in &absorbing the penalty
• Isaiah 53:4-6 Surely he has borne our griefs andcarried our sorrows; yet we esteemed himstricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But hewas pierced for our transgressions; he wascrushed for our iniquities; upon him was thechastisement that brought us peace, and with hiswounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep havegone astray; we have turned—every one—to hisown way; and the Lord has laid on him theiniquity of us all.
1) Substitution
1 Peter 2:24 He himself bore oursins in his body on the tree, thatwe might die to sin and live torighteousness. By his woundsyou have been healed.
1) Substitution
1 Peter 3:18For Christ also suffered once for sins, the
righteous for the unrighteous, that he mightbring us to God, being put to death in theflesh but made alive in the spirit,
2) Redemption: act of purchase
“Bought is the Greek word agorazo, which pictures a slave beingpurchased in the ancient publicslave market. Christ purchasedbelievers out of the slave market ofsin and set them free” - Paul Enns
– The Moody Handbook of Theology (Chicago, Ill:Moody Press, 1997), 233.
2) Redemption
1 Cor. 6:20 for you werebought with a price. Soglorify God in your body.
2) Redemption
1 Cor. 7:23 You were boughtwith a price; do not becomebondservants of men.
2) Redemption
Galatians 3:13a Christredeemed us from thecurse of the law bybecoming a curse for us.
2) Redemption
Revelation 5:9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scrolland to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people forGod from every tribe and language andpeople and nation,
3) Propitiation: righteousstandards fulfilled
“Propitiation, meaningthat the righteousdemands of a holy Godwere fully satisfied.”– The Moody Handbook of Theology (Chicago, Ill:
Moody Press, 1997), 233.
Romans 3:25 whom God put forwardas a propitiation by his blood, tobe received by faith. This was toshow God’s righteousness, becausein his divine forbearance he hadpassed over former sins.
4) Forgiveness: Legal basis
Colossians 2:13-14 And you, who were deadin your trespasses and the uncircumcisionof your flesh, God made alive together withhim, having forgiven us all our trespasses,14 by canceling the record of debt that stoodagainst us with its legal demands. This heset aside, nailing it to the cross.
*Forgiveness - “to send away”
5) Justification: legal decision
“Justification is also a legalact in which God the Judgedeclares the believingsinner righteous.”– The Moody Handbook of Theology (Chicago, Ill: Moody
Press, 1997), 234.
