The Atomic Theorists
J. J. Thomson (1856-1940)
Thomson is credited with the discovery of the electron (using the cathode ray experiment), of isotopes, and the invention of the mass spectrometer.
Earnest Rutherford (1871-1937)
Rutherford pioneered the “Rutherford model” of the atom, through his discovery and interpretation of Rutherford scattering in his gold foil experiment.
Robert Millikan (1868-1953)American experimental physicist who won the 1923 Nobel Prize for his measurement of the charge on the electron and for his work on the photoelectric effect
Niels Bohr (1879-1955)Danish physicist who made fundamental contributions to understanding atomic structure and quantum mechanics, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1922.
You and your group will write and perform a short play based on one of the experiments performed by the atomic Theorists; Thomson, Rutherford, Millikan, Bohr. The play should be three to six minutes long and everyone in the group should have a role.
Project #1 (100 pts, due 9/24):
Project #1 (100 pts, due 9/24): Your project should include the following elements: Props, pictures and/or other visuals of the experiment Explanation of how the experiment or theory worked Why it’s scientifically significant Background of the Scientist
Project #1 (100 pts, due 9/24): The RubricA portion of the grade for the project will be based on the input of a panel of peers who will assess both the project and the student's presentation of their project.
