KEY WEST

The Atocha was believed to have been sunk near the coast of key west. It laid there for many years and was finally brought back up to the surface in July 20th 1985. Key west is now a very popular holiday destination and is situated in the south of Florida, America. When the news that the Atocha had been found, the dock where Mel Fishers boat was about to dock were full of excited people.

Everyone had turned up but unfortunately so had the key west government.

TREASUREHundreds of tons of treasure was found on the Atocha. Some of the treasure had been scattered around the ship but some even made it to Spain. Aboard the Atocha were important documents, jewellery, gold and silver and lots of other things that are mentioned below. They are all now clean and safe in Mel Fishers museum that he set up just for the Atocha. But they also found bits of wreckage from the ship. The team also classed this as treasure. What

a great find. Some of the many treasures found at the wreckage of the Atocha were old Spanish coins, both gold and silver, gold and silver bars. Ruby’s, emeralds, chains, diamonds and lots of other treasures. Some of the most significant treasures found were a golden button, a rare golden Spanish coin from back when the ship sailed and one of the most important ones being gold amethyst ring.

The document that was found was the start of the search for the Atocha. It was a very important document and led the crew on a 16 year adventure

THE ATOCHA

The Spanish ship, the Atocha, was sailing to Spain from America in 1622. On it’s journey, only having ailed for a couple of days and not being far from it’s sailing point, the Atocha was hit by a hurricane that sank the Atocha, it’s passengers and all it’s treasure on board. It was thought that it was sailing with it’s sister ship when they were both hit my the storm. The Atocha was taking people back to their home country when it sank. All that was on board was lost and no one could find it hundreds of years after the accident.

The Atocha laid at the bottom of the sea floor for years and eventually it all started to wear away and became homes to sea creatures. The treasure on board was mainly all scattered around the crash site and about a quarter of it sat with the remains of it. Some of the treasure had made it to Spain and some had just scattered itself out along the coast of key west. You never know there could be remains of the Atocha treasure all over the world. Some may even be in Britain with us.
