There’s A Better WayWhen it comes to businesses doing things a better way, our co-ophas been at the forefront of innovation and change since thebeginning. We are a prime example that, even relatively small, independent and locally owned organisations can do their bit for theenvironment, and for the betterment of their part of the planet.

Somehow, this is the Spring edition and we’re planningthe summer calendar of outdoor events. 2019 is nothanging around, and we already have a lot lined up.You’ll find the dates that we’re in food stores taking your votes for the next memberelections on page 4 ready for May’s AGM, the festivals we’re attending on page4, the Big Co-op Clean Up litter-pick schedule on page 10 and the next set ofmember trips we’ve arranged on page 7. All in all, its shaping up to be a busy fewmonths already.

You’ll also find evidence throughout these pages on why the last few months weren’texactly quiet either, and see examples of us demonstrating a better way of doing things.Hence the title on the front.

Have a good Spring!

Welcome...

TastingSuccessOur Chelmsford store held a Fairtrade &Local Food Tasting Evening in March, and it was the most successful event of itstype that we’ve ever held. Not only did everyone enjoythemselves, but over £200 was raisedfor our Charity of the Year!

Best of BridgesCongratulations to Chelmsford QuadrantFashion Manager, Angela Bridges, whowas voted by her peers as our QuadrantColleague of the Year 2018. Angela workstirelessly to ensure her colleagues, customers and concession teams arehappy, so if you see her on the shop floormake sure you say ‘hi’!

Bed HacksDid you know March was NationalBed Month? Our furniture team puttogether the following life hacks for a betternight’s sleep.

Sleep-Friendly Environment: Makesure your bedroom is cool, dark, quiet andclutter free.

Wind Down Better: Everyone is differentso try different ways to relax before bed tosee what works best for you, such as gentlestretching, warm baths or reading. If yourmind is racing, write down worries. Turn offgadgets and dim the lights.

Improve Your Lifestyle: Smallchanges can have a huge difference tothe quality of your sleep. Review your diet, caffeine intake, alcohol consumption andexercise regime.

Keep a Sleep Diary: If you find droppingoff hard, why not write down what you’vebeen doing, what you’ve eaten and howyou’ve slept on the days you do and don’tsleep well? It could highlight some answers.

Take a bed MOT: You could be doingeverything right, but if you’re sleeping onan old, unsupportive or unhealthy bed youwon’t get a refreshing night’s sleep. Visitsleepcouncil.org.uk/bed-mot to see if itstime for a new bed.

Bee Friendly:The Essex Beekeeper Associationspoke to our Braintree group in March. If you want to attract more of our buzzybuddies into your garden, here aresome tips.Too hot: Bees need a break from thesun and heat too. Plant some groundcover for them to hide out betweenfeeding and flying.Thirsty: Lethargic bees might bedehydrated. Place shallow dishes ofwater around flowers, or keep afountain going with pebbles for thebees to sit on.Colourful: Bees love blue, purple andyellow flowers and plants. Keep this inmind when planting.Pesticides: A no brainer, but don’t usethem. Use natural pest protection suchas herbs, sage burning and lady bugs!Staggered: Don’t plant everythingearly in the season then have it all dieoff. Stagger your plantings to give themfresh blooms for longer.Pollination: Plant floweringvegetables and fruits, that way both youand the bees will benefit!

As a member, you are eligible to vote onwho represents you in our electedpositions (see more on page 11), butyou are also able to step forward andstand for them yourself. If you have thetime and passion to do your area justice, why not get in touch and let us know?

Your local Co-operative update... 9

I recently visited Amsterdam and stayedin the 3* Prins Hendrik hotel, which iscentrally situated in the city. It’ssurrounded by shops, bars & restaurantsand within a 5 minute walk fromAmsterdam Central Station.

There’s plenty to do in Amsterdam, whetheryou plan to chill out or explore the city. Forthose chilled days, I recommend a visit toStones Café where they are happy to playyour music requests. Players Bar, just offDam Square, was great for a drink andcatching up on the sports. There are amplepancake and waffle houses in Amsterdam, and this is my ultimate recommendation foranyone visiting the city!

If you want to explore, don’t miss theAmsterdam Canal Cruise and theAmsterdam Bike Tour which will ensureyou see all the sights. The HeinekenBrewery tour is worth a visit; they evenallow you to taste their beers along theway! The Anne Frank House is also a mustsee if you’re into history.

April 30th – The Meadows, ChelmsfordMay 31st – The Meadows, ChelmsfordJune 12th – George Yard, BraintreeJuly 10th – George Yard, Braintree

One of the main reasons people take out apre-paid funeral plan, we’re told, isbecause they don’t want their children tohave to pay for their funeral. And they’vegot a point. The price of a funeral has morethan doubled in the last 10 years, andtaking out a plan fixes the cost and couldsave thousands.

Paying in advance means:

• It’s inflation proof

• The cost can be spread over years

• Your family won’t have additional stress and expense in the future

• You can have peace of mind that your wishes are followed
