Lucifer is the King James Version rendering of the
Hebrew word הילל in Isaiah 14:12. This word,
transliterated hêlêl or heylel, occurs only once in the
Hebrew Bible, and according to the KJV-influenced
Strong's Concordance means "shining one, morning
star, Lucifer."
The word Lucifer is taken from the Latin Vulgate,
which translates הילל as lucifer, meaning "the
morning star, the planet Venus", or, as an adjective,
"light-bringing.“ The Septuagint renders הילל in
Greek as ἑωσφόρος (heōsphoros), a name, literally
"bringer of dawn," for the morning star.
In this passage (Isaiah 14:12), Isaiah applies to a king of Babylon the
image of the morning star fallen from the sky, an image he is generally
believed to have borrowed from a legend in Canaanite mythology.
Isaiah 14
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the
morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, that didst cast
lots over the nations!
13 And thou saidst in thy heart: 'I will ascend into heaven, above
the stars of God will I exalt my throne, and I will sit upon the
mount of meeting, in the uttermost parts of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the
Most High.‘
15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to the nether-world, to the
uttermost parts of the pit.
Lucifer and Venus
• In the traditional astrology of the ancient world, Lucifer is associated
with the planet Venus. The origin of this lies in the phenomenon of
heliacal rising, or when Venus Rx rises in the east ahead of the Sun
(around 15° to 17°) and is visible to the eye.
• Planets rising ahead of (before) the Sun are morning stars ─
“masculine” energy
• Planets rising after the Sun are evening stars ─ nocturnal, “feminine”
energy
• Morning Star Venus was called Phosphoros, or Lucifer in Latin. She
was considered a warrior goddess by the Babylonians. Venus
Hesperus, the Evening Star, was viewed as the goddess of love and
sensuality.
Fallen Angels
• The Books of Enoch 1 (c. 300 – 100 BC) and 2 (1st
century CE) in The Old Testament Apocrypha
• The Watchers or Fallen Angels (Grigori) were led by a
rebel angel Samyaza. They “abandoned their posts” and
mated with humans.
• Taught humans the arts of metallurgy, astrology,
cosmetics, writing with ink and paper, the course of the
moon, etc.
Man is included in the divine process, and this means that the principle
of separateness and autonomy over and against God—which is
personified in Lucifer as the God-opposing will—is included in it too.
C.G. Jung
Man is included in the divine process, and this means that the principle of
separateness and autonomy over and against God—which is personified in
Lucifer as the God-opposing will—is included in it too. But for this will there
would have been no creation and no work of salvation either. The shadow and
the opposing will are the necessary conditions for all actualization. An object
that has no will of its own, capable, if need be, of opposing its creator, and with
no qualities other than its creator’s, such an object has no independent
existence and is incapable of ethical decision. At best it is just a piece of
clockwork which the Creator has to wind up to make it function. Therefore
Lucifer was perhaps the one who best understood the divine will most faithfully.
For, by rebelling against God, he became the active principle of a creation
which opposed to God a counter-will of its own. Because God willed this, we
are told in Genesis 3 that he gave man the power to will otherwise. Had he not
done so, he would have created nothing but a machine, and then the
incarnation and the redemption would never have come about.
C.G. Jung, “A psychological approach to the dogma of the Trinity”
Nature never produces that which is perfect, or that which is complete in its
condition, but man has to complete it. This completing art is called
alchemical.
Paracelsus
And Azaz’el taught men the art of making swords, and knives, and shields,
and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the
art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony,
and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all
coloring tinctures.
1:8 Enoch
The proper function of the ego is to achieve consciousness. This would not
seem to be possible without the activation of evil. It is only when we come up
against evil that consciousness is raised to a certain height. So it may be,
paradoxically, that God allows evil because, even though it seeks to destroy
wholeness, wholeness in the spiritual sense would be impossible without it.
John Sanford, Jungian analyst
Dual aspects of the archetype
Lucifer’s challenging aspect:
• Amplifying problems, “separating” desires, fears,
emotional points of vulnerability and completely distorting
them
Lucifer’s empowering aspect:
• Teaching, providing assistance, deep insight, perception,
courage, ability, and spirituality in a Promethean sense
