You are invited to participate in the 21st Annual National Congress of the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA) and to contribute around the theme

Deepening the quality of mathematics teaching and learning VENUE

University of Limpopo Turfloop Campus Polokwane Limpopo Province DATE

29 June – 3 July 2015

CONGRESS THEME

Deepening the quality of mathematics teaching and learning

Mathematics is often used as a measure of the quality of our education system. When the wave of celebrating or decrying the matric passes or failures at the end of each year has passed, the focus is often redirected to the quality of passes. Academics and commentators deliberate on the quality of passes achieved, with mathematics often in the spotlight.

The introduction of the Annual National Assessments (ANAs) has added a further measure of scrutiny on the quality of teaching and learning mathematics in schools. The debate is no longer on the quality of Grade 12 results only but on the system as a whole.

From time to time international and regional tests are undertaken leading to a sustained questioning of the quality of mathematics teaching and learning in our schools.

At this 21st Annual National Congress, AMESA takes stock and reflects on strategies that could be used to address the issue of the quality of mathematics teaching and learning.

Some of the questions Congress 2015 will be addressing are: o How are mathematics teachers trained? o What kinds of continuing professional development programmes are being

offered to practicing mathematics teachers? o What mathematics is taught in schools? o What kinds of learner support materials are being used to assist teachers and

learners?

Come and be a part of this historical event!

THE PROGRAMME includes: Plenary addresses by the following invited speakers: o Edward A. Silver (University of Michigan, USA) o Sarah Bansilal (University of KwaZulu-Natal, SA) o Percy Sepeng (North West University, SA) o Sarah Jane Johnston (University of Southern Africa, SA) o Kabelo Chuene (University of Limpopo, SA) Panel discussions on important issues in mathematics education: o Panel 1: Can workbooks improve the quality of teaching and learning? o Panel 2: Can e-learning improve the quality of teaching and learning?

THE VENUE The University of Limpopo is the product of a merger between the former University of the North and the Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa), which merged on 1 January 2005. Since January 2015, the Medunsa Campus was incorporated into the Seafko Makgotho Health Sciences University.

The University of Limpopo is a leading African University focused on developmental needs of its communities and epitomising academic excellence and innovativeness − finding solutions for Africa.

The Turfloop Campus is 30 km east of Polokwane. It is along the R71 road and about 15 km from the famous Moria-Zion City.

This will be the third time that the Turfloop Campus has the honour to host the AMESA National Congress. The first was in 1998 and the second was in 2006. World-class facilities await presenters, sponsors and participants.

PLENARY SPEAKERS

Edward A. Silver (USA) is William A. Brownell Collegiate Professor in the School of Education and Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Michigan. Before joining the University of Michigan, he taught at the middle school and high school levels in New York State and at universities in Illinois, California, and Pennsylvania.

His scholarly interests include the study of mathematical thinking, especially mathematical problem solving and problem posing, the design and analysis of intellectually engaging and equitable mathematics instruction for students, innovative methods of assessing and reporting mathematics achievement, effective models for enhancing the knowledge of teachers of mathematics, and examining the interface between research and practice in education. He has published more than 160 articles, chapters, and books on these topics.

Sarah Bansilal (SA) has been working in Mathematics Education in the School of Education at the University of KwaZulu-Natal for 12 years. Prior to that she was a high school mathematics teacher and a college lecturer.

She obtained her doctoral degree at Curtin University in Western Australia in 2007, focusing on mathematics teachers' professional knowledge. She is a prolific researcher with over 50 peer-reviewed publications to her name. Her main research interest is about the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy. Her research has centred on the conceptual development of concepts in mathematics, the use of real-life contexts in Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy assessments, as well as the professional development of practicing teachers.

Percy Sepeng (SA) holds a PhD in Mathematics Education from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the School for Teacher Education and Training at the North-West University (Mafikeng Campus). Prior to joining NWU, he was employed by the University of South Africa, University of the Witwatersrand, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, University of Johannesburg, Tshwane University of Technology, and the Maths Center. He was previously a high school Mathematics and Physical Science teacher.

His research interest lies in enhancing mathematical modelling and problem-solving through promoting argumentation and discussion as strategies in the teaching and learning of mathematics in multilingual classroom settings.

Kabelo Chuene (SA) is senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, Science and Technology Education at the University of Limpopo. She is a doctoral graduate from Curtin University of Technology and her research focused on students' understanding of rates of change in Calculus.

Kabelo has taught mathematics to Foundation Year Mathematics for about 15 years, Mathematics for Educators for four years and Methods of Teaching for six years. These experience shaped Kabelo's research interests in classroom interactions that centre on students' experience of what it means to learn mathematics. As a developing researcher she has two publications and has supervised students' research projects at both honours and masters level.

Sarah Jane Johnston (SA) is currently Chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of South Africa. She holds a BComm, BSc Honours, MSc and PhD in Mathematics from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Her research interests are in special functions, orthogonal polynomials and hypergeometric functions and polynomials. She is an active member of the South African Mathematical Society in the portfolio of Scientific Activities.
