Amber Frushon and CourtneyLane, both Smyrna residentsand UDAAP students plan-
ning to major in communications, worked recently in the SmyrnaOpera Houses Marketing andCommunications InternshipProgram to gain invaluable real-world experience while also promot-ing the arts. Lane, a student at theWilmington campus, is a currentintern; Frushon, who is in the finalsemester of her Associate in Artsdegree at the Dover campus, waslater hired as the programs directorof the Opera House at the conclu-sion of her internship.
History The Smyrna Opera House islocated within the Old Town Hallbuilding on South and Main streets. Most visitors to downtown Smyrnawill notice the distinguished profileof this historic red-brick building, originally constructed in 1869, withits distinctive bell tower and high, arched windows. Many differenttown facilities have been housed
within its walls over the yearseverything from a theater to townoffices to a jailand it certainlybore no signs of returning to its pre-vious grandeur as a local arts mecca. In fact, the building had fallen intosuch disrepair over the years that in1998 it was in danger of beingdemolished, until local residents inthe non-profit Smyrna-ClaytonHeritage Association fought to save
it by organizingdonor funds for itsrestoration. Therestored buildingreopened in 2003and has since servedas a community artscenter that hostsboth local andnational performersand events. Theinternship program,in its first year, nowextends this commu-nity involvement tostudents hoping togain marketableexperience in theadministration, com-munications, andmarketing fields.
Amber Frushonhas a long historywith the organiza-tion: She beganattending the OperaHouses SummerTheatre Camp, heldannually for studentsaged 8 to 16, whenshe was 11.Participants receive workshop-styleinstruction in improv, staging, pro-
jection, and vocal and theater train-ing, she says, and participate in afinal performance assessment writ-ten by theater camp director JimMcGuigan. Frushon says she wasawarded a scholarship for her yearlyworkshop tuition and participatedeach year until she was 16 years old.

house led her to apply immediately after see-ing a posting about available internships on
the organizations Facebook page in fall 2012,she says.
I had just entered into the UDAAProgram with the Dover campus and was acommunication interest major, she said. Ithought this would be a perfect opportunityfor me to see how I like being a communica-tions major and work in my communitysince I wasnt on main campus and [was]unable to take advantage of all the clubs andorganizations up there. I hoped that in thelong run this might turn into a more perma-nent position, and it did!
Courtney Lane also first noticed the orga-nizations internship posting on its Facebookpage, she said. Fortunately, she was able tolearn more about the job from a firsthandsource before even applyingFrushon isLanes cousin, and Lane sought her out formore information. I asked my cousin Amber, who was cur-rently interning there, about the duties andresponsibilities that interning would entail. Idecided to apply based on both how highlyshe spoke of the Opera House and my mem-ories of attending the Opera House as a child
to see musicals. I thought it would be a greatopportunity to intern somewhere that wasconsidered very prestigious in my communi-ty, she said. Lane balances her internship responsibili-ties with her on-air schedule at ClearChannel Communications in New Castle. Infact, it was this opportunity that drew her tothe Wilmington UDAAP campus; she trans-ferred to Wilmington from West ChesterUniversity so that she could attend schoolcloser to the broadcasting company. Laneproduces commercials and is the traffic
reporter for 94.7 WDSD, 92.9 TOM-FM,1410 WDOV, 1450 WILM, and 1290 TheTicket. Frushon works part-time for ClearChannel, as well, doing the beach trafficreports for 94.7 WDSD.
Responsibilities & Events
Both Frushon and Lane held manyresponsibilities as interns, and Frushon hastaken on even more responsibility since she
became the organizationsprograms director. At thestart of the internship, shesaid, she worked in mainlycommunications and designcapacities, creating posters,
flyers, performance pro-grams, and advertisements.Lanes duties were simi-
lar, and also varied. I wasresponsible for writing pressreleases, helping run thebox office, planning events, producing music for eventsthat needed it, and bringing new ideas inthat would attract the attention of teensand young adults, Lane said. I also set upand voiced public service announcementsfor some of our events that were played on
the radio. Both Lane and Frushon earned a newrespect for event organizing, among otherthings, during their internships. I learnedcountless things about business, and nowunderstand the amount of work event-plan-ning takes, especially when you work for anon-profit, Lane said.
These organizational skills have been putto the test in the various events Lane andFrushon worked to bring about. Frushon co-chaired the Opera Houses inaugural Trends,Tulips, and Tea event, which featured a fash-
ion show, spring bazaar, and high tea. Takingon even more responsibility, Frushon andLane created and organized the OperaHouses recent Summer Solstice BlackoutParty, the Opera Houses first-ever teen danceevent. Held August 2, 2014 a little after theactual summer solstice so as to not coincidewith the popular Firefly Music Festivalandfeaturing black lights, neon dcor, andDovers DJ Styles on the turntables, the eventwas a sensation, attracting more than a hun-dred teens aged 14 to 20 who danced thenight away. After the success of their event,Frushon said, the Opera House is now in theplanning stages for a teen-orientedHalloween party this October. In addition to the hands-on event pro-motion experience gained in working onthese events, Frushon said the internshipalso improves interns organizational,time-management, and writing skills, aswell as giving them valuable knowledge inthe fields of marketing, public relations, and administration.
Plans for the Future Like many students, Frushon was uwhich career path to choose after gradfrom high school.
Originally I was going to become
ultrasound technician and go throughDelaware Tech Diagnostic MedicalSonography Program. My first semesttaking classes, I realized that I was beca technician more for job security thadoing something I was really passionaabout, she said.
Hearkening back to her experiencestheater and dramatic arts, Frushon decon a career that fit her interests far betdecided to become a communications with a concentration in public relationsaid. I have always had a love for the a
and theater, and if I can help people shtheir passion while organizing it and ping community involvement, then thatgreat thing! I also like to have fun, she added. mean, who doesnt? Growing up in a stown, there wasnt a whole lot to do wa ride from a parent to Dover or up nosomewhere. The Smyrna Opera Houseto provide opportunity and be a commcenter for the arts. If I can give back tocommunity and help generate youth/tactivities and make this a space for eve
then I will be complete.Proving that she can balance her pr
director and on-air job duties with herload at UD, Frushon is currently in thesemester of her Associate in Arts degrethen plans to continue toward her bacdegree in communications and is consa minor in advertising.
Lane will also be majoring in commtions at UD, but will be taking a slightlferent course; she plans to continue hecareer in radio.

I also hope to begin voice acting when I have enough expe-rience in my field, she said. I always loved listening to talkradio as a child, but I never pictured myself actually workingin radio. I later decided to try it on a whim, and that landedme where I am today. It was the greatest decision I ever madefor my career.
Considering an Internship?
Some Advice: Frushon said that while some students might dread the ideaof an unpaid internship, these experiences offer an invaluableeducation that just cant be gained in a classroom environment. Sometimes you have to think on your feet and do thingsthat arent even asked of you. An internship teaches you topush yourself, career-wise. You are able to ask questions, earnopinions from experienced members of the community, learnfrom your mistakes, work in a team and independently, andlearn who you are as a business professional.
Lane advises fellow students seeking an internship to startout close to home.
You never know what opportunities your hometown canoffer you until you search for them. This way, you will have afoundation to build and expand from, and at the very least, somewhere you can call home in a professional sense, as well asa physical one, she said.

For those who are looking for an internship in com-
munications, journalism, graphic design, arts admin-
istration, public relations, marketing, or advertising,
the Smyrna Opera House has plenty of experience for
you. Students will assist Managing Director Robin
Bruner with creation and productions of all organiza-
tional print material and management of our website
and social media pages. Students will work on com-
munication pieces (such as flyers, programs, fact
sheets, and events material), as well as supporting
efforts for our fundraiser events like our Annual Arts
Cotillion; Trends, Tulips, and Tea for Women; author
events, Christmas Open House; teen dances, etc. The
Smyrna Opera House is flexible with its interns and
understands that school comes first. Students are
asked to partner with SOH for 12 weeks, with about
15-20 hours a week dedicated to the SOH. For more
information, students can email soh.secretary@veri-
zon.net or call (302) 653-4236 for more information.
