8 EVENTS: GALLERY GACHET - ONLINE AUCTION!

ENDS June 19, 2016, 07:00 PM PDT $2,746.00RAISED GOAL:$12,000.00 Now is the time to support Gallery Gachet’s future. After twenty–one years of receiving core funding from the Provincial Ministry of Health, Gallery Gachet learned this past autumn that a shift in funding priorities and redefinition of mental healthcare for our neighbourhood was resulting in the conclusion of our contract with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority. This sudden financial cut, now in effect, amounts to half of the organization’s overall revenue. In the past six months our friends, community partners and networks have come forward offering various support. We are restructuring with new and hopeful possibilities ahead.

Gallery GachetAn iconic and integral community hub with extensive experience as a frontline facility, Gallery Gachet is an artist–run centre located in the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, Tsleil–Watuth, Musqueam and Squamish territories. Through artistic means we demystify issues related to mental health and social justice. We educate the public and strive to further the well–being of our communities. Our collectively–run exhibition and studio space empowers participants as artists and curators. Gallery Gachet also coordinates a volunteer program, mentoring artists. Featuring a range of visual arts, performance and and community–engaged programming, we involve developing artists and professionals alike in collaboration and dialogue. We consider art and culture to be necessary elements of a healthy society. Go online to 32auctions.

Based on the myuth of Isla Santa Maria, an island said to have formed from the wreckage of a replica of one of Christopher Columbus’ ships, Husain’s film draws together the violent conolnialist legacy of Columbus with developments of perspectival drawing and stereoscopic image making as two histories that reordered the way we see the world.

23 EXHIBITION: ADD OIL MACHINE 打氣機

In collaboration with Hong Kong Exile Curated by Melissa Lee and Aaron Levy Organized by Slought Foundation in collaboration with the Add Oil Team, this virtual exhibition seeks to spread awareness about the power of individual and collective assemblage and the formation of community and solidarity through art. In commemoration of the final days of protests one year earlier, the project will launch online on December 10, 2015, raising questions about archivization and historicization, and how institutions record and display protest movements and cultural resistance. Here, in Vancouver, Canada, we will be presenting it in the form of an outdoor projection and installation. The title of the exhibition is derived from “Stand By You: Add Oil Machine 並肩上: 打氣機” a spontaneous four-month project by artists Sampson Wong (黃宇軒), Jason Lam (林志輝) and friends that strategically projected political writing on key government buildings in Hong Kong. FOR TRUTH & RECONCILIATION RESPONSE PROJECTS Call for Submissions (Open now through June 19, 2016) The Mush Hole Project is an immersive, site-specific art and performance installation event taking place at the Woodland Cultural Centre (Brantford) from September 16 to 18, 2016. This project aims to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action and to preserve, query, and reveal the complex personal, political, and public narratives around Canada’s residential school system, in general, and the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School (at the Woodland Cultural Centre) specifically, through the art of contemporary Aboriginal artists. The Mush Hole Project selection committee is seeking individual responses from artists that question the following: Apartheid, Assimilation, Decolonization, Education, Genocide, Intergenerational Trauma, Mohawk Institute, Nourishment, Reconciliation, and Truth. The artists of the Mush Hole Project will animate the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School site. Artists may propose interior and/or exterior works or creative interventions and should identify a site on the grounds of the Woodland Cultural Centre for the installation or performance of their work (for example, the driveway, apple orchard, library, kitchen, etc). Artists are encouraged to consider the residential school system through the dichotomy of both historical and contemporary knowledges and creative practices. Mush Hole Project and Save the Evidence: The Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School building at the Woodland Cultural Centre has been providing in-depth and historically significant insight into the Residential School System for the past 44 years. The Mohawk Institute is one of less than 10 residential schools still standing across Canada. With close to 10,000 visitors every year, tours and programs offer a distinctive look into First Nations and Canadian history. The Mush Hole Project aims to raise awareness and encourage support for the Save the Evidence campaign, to ensure that the physical evidence of this dark chapter in Canadian history is never forgotten. Selection Process The selection committee encourages proposals by artists from Six Nations of the Grand in Ontario and from the greater Ontario region; however, all Aboriginal artists are encouraged to apply. Artists may propose new works or offer existing works for the consideration of the selection committee. The committee is interested in a wide range of media including, but not limited to: dance, film/media, installation, sound art, visual/theatrical/musical performance, and visual art. Submissions must include: • Project Description: applicants should describe the proposed art work, project, or

performance including title, medium, dimensions, duration, spatial and technological requirements

• Selection of Images: 2-3 images of the art work, project, or performance (if it is an existing piece)

• Artist’s CV: current, maximum 3 pages Applications are to be submitted in a single PDF document — with the subject line “Mush Hole Project” — in care of Greg Campbell: [email protected] Selected artists will each receive an honorarium of not less than $1,000. Artists are

67 EXHIBITION: 12 TREES CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The Gardiner Museum is inviting artists to create “green” art installations for our annual 12 Trees exhibition. Last year, the 12 Trees exhibition was reinvigorated as a showcase of contemporary tree-inspired art installations based on the theme “The Joy of Creativity”. The artists and designers included Justin Broadbent, Bruno Billio, Jane Waterous, and Michael Adamson, among others. The exhibition raised over $130,000 for the Gardiner, doubled its audience over previous years, and received tremendous media coverage. The Gardiner is among the few museums in the world focused on ceramics. This year’s 12 Trees theme celebrates the very foundations of clay: the Earth. In 2016, we invite artists to propose Christmas tree installations inspired by the theme Good for the Earth. 69 FESTIVAL: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS – ELEMENTAL FESTIVAL

Date: Sep 30 – Oct 2 Location: 4elements Living Arts, Kagawong, Manitoulin Island | Mnidoo Mnising Co-curated by Patricia Mader + sophie anne edwards 4elements Living Arts has two opportunities for you to participate in this year’s Elemental Festival - besides attending, that is. We’re accepting submissions to our Elemental Festival Writing Prize, and proposals from emerging artists working in all mediums to install work during the festival. About Elemental Festival and 4e - Sep 30th to Oct 2nd 2016, the second annual Elemental Festival will take place in Kagawong, a village of less than 200 people on Mnidoo Mnising | Manitoulin Island. Presented by 4elements Living Arts (4e), a local interdisciplinary non-profit arts organization, the festival is site-specific and includes multiple forms of contemporary art. At 4e we’re shaking loose outdated mind-sets about where contemporary art can happen. This year’s curatorial theme is ‘Walking’. Despite its typically spontaneous, occasionally reflexive, and sometimes somnambulatory nature, walking is a complex action. It can be both physical and performative; a deeply personal and a political act that claims and carves out space emotionally, politically, socially and culturally. We follow routes,

Page 45: THE ARTERY News from the Britannia Art Gallery June 1 ... · Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre in South Surrey Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre 16855 - 24 Avenue Surrey, BC V3Z 0A2

sometimes newly created recreational trails, sometimes traditional trading routes or harvesting paths whose origins have been erased through colonial territorialization. Paths aren’t always human-made. For Elemental Festival, we have invited works that propose to examine a complex range of socio-cultural, and geo-political paths; that consider the legacy of walking with a particular focus on walking in the context of our specific rural and ecologically sensitive site. This year’s confirmed artists include: Matt Coelin, Intallation artist, Sault Ste Marie Judy Martin, Fibre artist, Little Current Elisha Sidlar, Performance artist, M'Chigeeng First Nation Judy Bowyer, Installation/sound artist, Kitchener Chris Turnball, Installation artist/writer, Kemptville Madhur Anand, Ecologist/writer, Guelph The festival includes two full day writing workshops, artist talks, community art engagements, community walks, and panel discussions. Outdoor installation and performance works will animate the village as the Salmon make their annual run up the Kagawong River. Call for Submissions - Emerging Artists working in any medium are invited to submit proposals for work to be installed, or performed during the festival. Projects should relate to our curatorial theme, and our organization’s mandate. Typically projects are installed outside, or have an outdoor component. We can provide assistance with the installation and an honorarium of $500, plus free entry to any festival workshops you wish to attend. If you have a great idea, please submit the following items attached as a single .pdf to [email protected] • Full name, address, and contact info; website if you have one • A brief project proposal (1 or 2 paragraphs) • A brief artist statement (1 paragraph) • Artist CV (2 pages or less)

Please also submit 5 good quality images of your work with an corresponding image list (images should

be no larger than 1MB and should be images that most relate to your proposed project)

• $10 application processing fee via e-transfer (think of it as a donation to a wee tiny arts organization doing great things – it will make you feel warm and fuzzy) or cheque to the 4e office.

Use ‘Artist proposal – Elemental Festival 2016’ as the subject line. Deadline: June 15 Elemental Festival Writing Prize – We invite writers to submit works of previously unpublished short prose (700 words or less) that engage creatively with our curatorial theme. All entries will be juried by a panel of local writers. Winning entries will be read at the festival opening. 1st prize is $150 2nd prize $75

What this entails is a rigorous study of the arts through a challenging, tactile application of every skill set learned. TSA believes the arts should be accessible to all levels of experience. Whether you're a working professional or just starting out, TSA offers programs that address all levels of expertise. The only thing our students need to get started is a passion for their craft. Once they have that, our mentors are there to further refine, hone and cultivate their skills. A mandate of the school is to design policies that better reflect the demographics of the community it serves and to recommend programs and services that better serve the needs of diverse groups. 86 PUBLICATION: KAPSULA MAGAZINE CFP: THE END

Deadline June 30, 2016 Starting September 2016, KAPSULA will no longer be releasing regular monthlies to our subscribers. Opting instead for a collaborative, projects-based publishing model, you won't be getting rid of us too easily; however, to mark THE END of KAPSULA as we know it, we ask writers to consider the idea of finality in both contemporary art and criticism. And as a nod to the last three years, through which the magazine, arts writing, and the broader network of arts disciplines have undergone significant changes on varying scales, we're asking writers to highlight a topic specific to the period that KAPSULA has been produced: 2013 - 2016. What, in the broad sense, has led us to THE END? Topics may be international in scope,

Page 60: THE ARTERY News from the Britannia Art Gallery June 1 ... · Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre in South Surrey Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre 16855 - 24 Avenue Surrey, BC V3Z 0A2

but must fulfill the thematic and calendrical restrictions. Whether it's an exhibition, a text, an artwork, or a seemingly unprecedented phenomenon in the art world, we ask that it be dated no earlier than 2013 and speak to the concept of finality in art. We made it this far without literalizing the magazine into a time CAPSULE, but awash with sentiment, we couldn't help ourselves. Submit abstracts, proposals and finished papers to [email protected] by June 30th, 2016. As always, we strongly encourage you to view both our archive and our guidelines prior to submission. http://kapsula.ca

We will embrace experimentation, chance, and accident in our process, thinking of the filmmaking process as a cycle not separate from the natural, ecological cycles that encompass our lives and practices. An alternative to traditional filmmaking instruction, we forego the rules in favour of integrating cycles of experimentation, growth, and decay. The Film for Artists - Site + Cycle residency will host free public screenings, talks, and tours, in order to foster interest in the Toronto Islands as a creative site and source of inspiration, encouraging participants and public audiences to consider Toronto’s unique history, landscape and topography. CYPRESS: 96 PERFORMANCE: OPEN CALL FOR CYPRUS PERFORMANCE ART WORKSHOP 2016 THE MARATHON

10th - 18th September 2016 / Nicosia, Cyprus This year "The Marathon" Performance Art Workshop will be visiting Cyprus, following its course from last year’s versions in Berlin hosted by Cell63 Artplatform and in Athens hosted by epitelesis - Performance Art Foundation. In Nicosia, the workshop and public events will be hosted by Sensorium Space, consisting of an introductory day, six consecutive workshop days from the 11th until the 16th of September, a final presentation of live performances by the participants and a feedback session on the following day. "The Marathon" will be guided by international artists Dagmar I. Glausnitzer-Smith, Zierle & Carter, PASHIAS and Francesco Kiàis, in gallery spaces and in the public arena at the heart of Nicosia. Concept & Methodology: Often used as a metaphor for strenuous efforts and concentration, the 'marathon' aims at reaching a 'finish line'. But a 'marathon' runner learns to distribute energy on the way, making of every step a 'goal' and of every path a 'purpose'. This experiential workshop offers participants a unique and intense input/collaboration with five internationally established artists, in order to experience an array of methodologies and processes of performance art, whilst being actively encouraged to delve into their own new and unchartered territory. By inviting each participant to discover a personal journey, the 'marathon' offers a route into five stages of diverse artistic and pedagogical approaches in order to generate a common territory to meet, share and give space for risk taking, whilst shifting the parameters of creation. On Saturday 17th of September, the journey of each participant will be transformed into a new 'starting line' by leading into a final event of live performances open to the public and organized specifically according to their resulting work. Before the workshop week, a special event hosted by Sensorium Space, on Friday 9th of September, featuring live performances by the workshop facilitators, will allow both participants and the public to experience the artists’ working practice and give an insight into their own 'marathon' route of performance. Schedule Outline: 09/09 : PLUS-MOTION - Live performance art series featuring workshop facilitators 10/09 : Arrivals / First Meeting (Participants should arrive in Nicosia no later than 17:00) 11/09 : Sculpting Action - By Zierle & Carter 12/09 : Along the edge, across the borders - By Francesco Kiàis 13/09 : The Performative Walkabout - By Dagmar I. Who: Beep (Biennial exhibition of Painting) has been running since 2012 and is a not-for-profit large scale celebration of contemporary painting. This year Beep is FREE to enter and is open to painters from all over the world. When: 5 Aug - 3 Sept, Swansea, Wales UK & 7 Oct - 5 Nov, Wrexham, Wales, UK Payments: Main Prize £1000 and solo exhibition with elysiumgallery, People's Prize: £200 Details: Beep is Wales's only large-scale contemporary international painting exhibition taking place at different venues every two years. 2016 will see the main exhibition tour from Swansea to Wrexham and include satellite exhibitions, events and residencies in and around Swansea, Wrexham and Cardiff. This year's theme aims to explore notions of perception, memory and belonging grounded in a place, space or time in the medium of paint. The realisation of this 'place' evokes abstract perceptions. Psychological impressions, physical memory, re-imagined and reconstituted fragments develop from deep felt multi-sensory experiences. Investigation into 'the place I never wanted to leave' (and may have left, by will or necessity) should offer a profound awareness of the elusive nature of objective reality. Longing for another place and time suggests a longing to restore totality of being. In the same way a smell, a sound or a sight momentarily transport us to the centre of an experience in place, so can the image. Beep 2016 is seeking artists' submissions in response to these ideas, reconstructing their own 'modes of transportation'. The exhibitions will take place in two large venues. The exhibition artists will be selected by elysiumgallery, Swansea and the judges will be artist Shani Rhys James MBE and Jonathan Watkins, Director Ikon Gallery, Birmingham This year Beep2016 is FREE to enter. After the selection process if you are one of the artists picked to participate in the Swansea and Wrexham exhibitions you will be required to pay a £25 exhibitions fee which will directly feed straight back into the set up and prize costs. Beep and elysiumgallery are not-for-profit, artist-led organisations. Please see website for further information on venues and activities.
