On November 1, 2011, Austin Museum of Art (AMOA) and Arthouse at the Jones Center (Arthouse) merged into a single museum, with two architectually significant locations including Laguna Gloria on the shores of Lake Austin and The Jones Center downtown.

MISSION STATEMENT: The museum provides rich environments for a wide range of audiences to investigate and experience excellence in modern and contemporary art. The museum accomplishes this through innovative exhibitions, education, interpretative programs and direct access to the creative process.

The Art School is pleased to offer this series by a prominent figure in the birding community. Expand your understanding and appreciation of how birds have figured in art beginning with prehistoric markings on cave walls progressing all the way to the sophisticated illustrations found in current field guides for today’s bird watchers. Just back from a round-the-world birding program, Robin will explore the rich texture of our appreciation of birds in Western painting and poetry, as well as take time to observe and discuss species in the grounds of Laguna Gloria.

ROBIN DOUGHTY: Professor Emeritus UT/Austin, has authored ten books, mostly about birds. He is interested in the history of wild animal use and conservation, and his most recent co-authored work, The Albatross and The Fish (UT Press, 2011), received a forward from HRH Prince Charles.

PERSPECTIvE DRAwINGLinear perspective is an extremely simple set of drawing guidelines that are surprisingly easy to understand and use. Learn how to see perspective as it passes through the human body and employ this important technique as did the artists of the Renaissance who developed it. Practice Leonardo’s curved model of linear perspective. While looking to the work of both past and contemporary artists, contrast his model with hyperbolic perspective. INTRO TO ENCAUSTIC PAINTINGEncaustic painting is an ancient process of using molten wax, resin and pigments that are layered and fused with heat. You will learn how to mix colors, create luminous layers over an underpainting, and how to make an encaustic photo transfer. Create one-of-a-kind archival paintings by building up surface textures and color. Demonstrations and specialized attention during each session.

COLLABORATIvE MURAL DESIGNIn this exciting new collaborative project, students create a community based mural for the historic district of downtown Austin at the corner of 8th and Congress. The class will use the first three weeks to decide upon a specific theme, imagery and style in which the final project is executed and then design the mural. The final three weeks are spent realizing the design at the Hickory Street location.

Also covered: using visual references, transferring sketches to a painting surface, submitting final art (after you get that contract) and marketing your work. This course invites you, the artist, to find the balance between spontaneity and control. Use watercolor to explore the evolution of abstract form from observed reality. Bring a singular subject, such as a sketch, object or photo, and from this source, we will subtract, expand, isolate, redefine and translate. You will complete a small series of works that explores this one central subject. This course will also focus on the various experimental techniques and tools that can be utilized to create a finished painting. With more than 70 national and international exhibitions in the past five years, including the American Craft Museum, SOFA Chicago and the Barrick Museum, her work can be seen across the world and in numerous museum collections.

“My imagery captures the exhaustion and exhilaration of life as both a creative artist and busy parent. My children inspire me with their imaginative minds and animal-like energy. As I nurture and care for them, they continually feed my thoughts with their fairytale-like quirkiness.My sculptures are handbuilt using thin, slab-like coils of clay. The glaze surfaces are built up by multifiring lay-ers of underglaze, slips, and overglaze.”Janis has been the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including multiple fellowships from The Ohio Arts Council and The Greater Columbus Arts Council. She received her BFA from Brigham Young University and her MFA from Ohio State University and currently lives in Ohio with her husband and five children.
