The Art of the Book celebrates contemporary jacl<et and book

illustration and the many artists who have collaborated with the

University of Georgia Press during the last two decades. lt also

provides an inside look into the creative process of book and lacket

design.

Throughout its sixty-four-year history, the University of Georgia

Press has valued good book design and production. Since 1982,

books and jacl<ets produced for Press books have won more than

one hundred design awards. Many people deserve credit and thanks

for this considerable achievement. Bookmaking is, by necessity, a

collaborative undertaking. A successful book design results from

cooperation between many differently skilled individuals including

publishers, acquiring editors, supervisory editors, designers, artists,

production coordinators, typesetters, printers, and binders. All of

them work in service of the author and reader, language and thought.
