The Art of Recycling Waste Management sponsored a Recycling Day Event hosted by CBS Radio at Town Green Park in The Woodlands. Waste Management invited area school teachers to initiate student artwork for the event using recycled materials and/or messag- ing sustainability. Waste Management granted $10,000 dollars to schools presenting winning artwork to support art depart- ment programs. Two Kingwood High School students in Business and Mar- keting Education Teacher Lisa Herr’s class placed well in the Fashion Art competition. Sophia Dousis’ project, Party Cake Couture, won 1st place Visual Art 10th grade, 1st place Fashion Art, and 2nd Place Overall Art with a $3,500 grant for Lisa Herr’s program. Jean Paul Alves won 2nd Place in Visual Arts-10th Grade and 3rd Place in Fashion Art Overall for his Recycled Runway Tuxedo. Jean Paul will soon have photos of his project includ- ed on the National Science Museum website. Three elementary art teachers pictured below from left, Kim Hancock, Lisa Jones and Anne Lynch participated in the Visual Art contest. The teachers conduct art classes for Oak Forest, Maplebrook, Summerwood, Fall Creek, Bear Branch and Deerwood elementary schools. The artwork submitted was made from recycled materials such as packaging, newspapers, old jewelry parts and light building materials. Oak Forest Elementary student Viviana Sora, at bottom right, placed First in the 5th grade division and Third overall, gar- nering a nice big trophy for her and a $1500 grant for the Kim Hancock’s art program at Oak Forest Elementary.
