T he world of hair extensions has come a long way in recent years. The previous methods of extensions were harsh and unhealthy for your hair; with painful and unattractive results. We have also come a long way with our skills and methods, Bellagio Salons are a step above the rest in The Art of Hair Extensions. Karolynn, a hair extension specialist with Bellagio Spas & Salons, has answered a few frequently asked questions concerning the art of hair extensions. Q: Where does the hair come from? Extension hair can come from all over the world. There are two types of common hair: Caucasian and Asian. Caucasian hair is grouped from places such as Russia, Poland, Romania, Europe and the United States as well. Asian hair is grouped from places such as China, India, the Philippines and Vietnam. A great deal of hair is collected from monasteries as sacrifices and offerings. Women will donate their hair as an offering to their God as a sign of modesty. It is sold for either spiritual or financial gain, and the money is then used to improve living conditions in their village. Q: Are there different types of hair? Yes, the hair is collected and is separated into two groups, Remy and Non-Remy Hair. Remy Hair, known as “Cuticle Hair,” has been cut with The Art of HAIR EXTENSIONS the roots aligned and bound together as if the base of a ponytail was snipped off and tied at the top. It is maintained in a bundle until it reaches the factory with all the hair facing in the same direction. This is the desired hair, and as such it is more costly than Non-Remy Hair. Non-Remy Hair, known as “Non- Cuticle Hair”, has the roots and ends mixed and is collected as found (usually on the floor of shrines). Since the collectors can’t tell which side of the hair strand is the root, it is sent to factories to be treated with chemicals. The chemicals will strip the hair of its cuticle which will help prevent the hair from forming massive knots when applied for extensions. This process leaves the hair limp and lifeless, which can still cause tangles eventually. Q: Does the price of hair vary? Yes, pricing varies with hair type, Remy or Non-Remy, color, texture, length, and the grade of hair when it is processed. For example, Chinese hair is low in cost because it is high in quantity but low in quality. European hair is high in cost because it is low in quantity and high in quality. The cost can also be impacted when considering what type of processing the hair needs, this usually depends on the hair’s point of origin. Select companies carry “Virgin Hair” that has not been colored, treated, or stripped, and naturally comes with a hefty price tag. Much like the old adage “You get what you pay for.” Q: What kind of methods do you use? I use two types of methods: Bonded Individuals and Glue-In Wefts. For my Bonded Individual Extensions, I use raw unbound strands of hair and bond them to the existing hair; moving throughout the different areas of the head. This enables me to color blend for a natural look. It also allows for the hair to shift in the extensions, which means that the extensions have various lengths throughout the piece (just as real hair does). Lastly, I can make different sizes of extensions to fit the client. I have seen many people use large pieces around the face which is the most fragile area on the head. They are too heavy, which causes breakage and discomfort. Non-RemyHair,knownas“Non-CuticleHair”,hastherootsandendsmixedandiscollectedasfound(usuallyonthefloorofshrines).Sincethecollectorscan’ttellwhichsideofthehairstrandistheroot,itissenttofactoriestobetreatedwithchemicals.Thechemicalswillstripthehairofitscuticlewhichwillhelppreventthehairfromformingmassiveknotswhenappliedforextensions.Thisprocessleavesthehairlimpandlifeless,whichcanstillcausetangleseventually.
