The time series below shows global distribution and variation of the concentration of mid-tropospheric carbon dioxide in parts per million (ppm). The overall color of the map shifts toward the red with advancing time due to the annual increase of CO2. Credit: NASA

The principle of The Three Pillars of Sustainability says that for the complete sustainability problem to be solved all three pillars of sustainability must be sustainable. The three pillars are social sustainability, environmental sustainability, and economic sustainability.Of the three pillars, the most important is environmental sustainability. If this is not solved, then no matter how hard we try the other pillars cannot be made strong because they are dependent on the greater system they live within, the environment. Credit: thwink.org

Basically the world's standard definition of environmental sustainability is sustainable development, which means sustainable economic growth, which is an oxymoron. No form of economic growth can be continued indefinitely. Furthermore, all economic growth today is terribly environmentally degrading. Thus it's impossible to be sustainable and achieve economic growth at the same time, now and for at least the next 50 years or so. Credit: thwink.org

Unlike Many Think, There Is No ‘They’ To Blame For This Crisis: Everybody’s Addicted To Economic Growth

“We all got hooked on growth. Rising GDP numbers became our main measure of success. ‘More, bigger and faster’ meant ‘better.’We’re all addicted to growth. We all want better jobs and higher returns on investments. But we live on a finite planet. The end of growth is not the fault of any one politician or a political party, but some people benefited from growth more than others.”

To Live Without Economic Growth, We’ll Have To Start Doing A Few Things Differently

“We can live without economic growth, but we’ll have to start doing a few things differently:We have to measure and aim for improvements in life that don’t require increasing our consumption of fossil fuels and other depleting resources, or piling on more debt.Freedom, being with the people we love, good health and the time to enjoy it, a secure happy community.”

“Gold or money has become the standard benchmark of success in our society. Ironically, the pursuit of this type of temporary wealth has primarily led to the exploitation of humans, animals, plants and natural resources in general.” –Sadhu Govardhan
