ARKANSAS GENEA LOGICA L NAMES THREE HONORARY

SOCIETY MEMBERS

Mrs. H. A. Knorr Mrs. Lady Elizabeth Luker

115

Mrs. Grace Benton Nelson

Three honorary members of the Arkansas Genealogical Society were elected by the A GS Board of Directors in 1972 and were announced at the Society's annual meeting in October. They are: Mrs. H. A. Knorr of Pine Bluff, Mrs. Lady Elizabeth Luker of Newport and Mrs. Grace Benton Nelson of Gurdon.

Mrs. Knorr, well-known to Arkansas genealogists as "Miss Kitty,"has devoted a lifetime to family research and.is perhaps the foremost authority in America on Virginia families. She has compiled and published 14 books on Virginia marriages; copies of which she has generously donated to the genealogical library of our SOCiety.

Mrs. Knorr is a member of many genealogical and patriotic organizations, .including Daughters of the Barons of Runnymede, a group whose lineage is traced back to 1215, the Society of Mayflower Descendants, Daughters of the American Revolution, . the First Families of Virginia, Colonial Dames of America and many others. A more detailed article on Mrs. Knorr was printed in the Oct. - Nov. - Dec. , 1970 issue of Arkansas Family Historian.

Mrs. Luker is well known in northeast Arkansas as a leader in historical activities and research. Under her personal supervision the restoration of the Jacksonport Courthouse in Jackson County and the restoration of the steamboat Mary Woods No.2 on White River were undertaken and completed. For this project the Award of Merit was presented to the Jackson County Historical Socie~y by the American Association for State and Local History.

The above restorations were the subjects of a film completed last year by the Arkansas Educational T V Commission and were much publicized by the state newspapers.

Mrs .. Nelson is perhaps best known in Arkansas historical Circles for her research .into the life of Meriwether Lewis Randolph, last territorial secretary of Arkansas and a grandson of Thomas Jefferson. Three articles by her, published.in the Arkansas Gazette in January and February, 1956, tell the story of how a chance remark in the 1930's led her to f.ind the grave of Randolph some twenty years later in a remote section of southern Clark. County.

Her years of research into the Randolph-Jefferson families made her all authority on the subject, and in 1966 she was invited to attend a reunion of Jefferson's descendants at Charlottesville and Monticello.

LETTER TO DR. JAMES BOYD BLACKERBY JULY 3, 1866

This letter was written by Benjamin Blackerby in South Carolina to his son, Dr. James 13o,yd Blackerby, who was living at the time in what is now Cleveland County, Arkansas. Dr. Blackerby migrated to this area from Shelby County, Alabama in 1849. He was one of the first medical doctors to practice here. Dr.' Blackerby was a great grandfather of Herschel R. Garner, Rison, Arkansas. -- Mrs. H. R. Garner, Rison, Ark;lnsas.

Dear Son and Daughter,

July the 3rd, 1866 Laurens District, S.C.

I take this opportunity of writing you a few lins to let you know that v.:e are all well at this time hoping that when this comes to hand it will find yqu all enjoying the same blessings of life. I recd, your kind & welcome' leiter some time ago & I would have written sooner but I thought that I might have a Ghanc!8 to send it parte of the way by hand. I have nothing of interest to write at present we have a very good prospect for a good crop at this time but we have had most too much rain for cotten & the weather too cold but it is very hot at this time & I hope everything will begin to grow for crops are very backward for this time of year but our land is getting old and nearly exausted so we can't expect to make very much at best what freedmen I have hird are doing as well as I could expect for them to do. I think the freedmen are generaly doing well but they will quit and stray about, some of them changed homes several times this year. 'I think the ware has' about ruined this state We can never be the people V:e i.ere before for our land is too poore to work hired labor to advantage. They have been a grate man,y freedmen cared out west from this state so I think if you want to get hands it not be a very dificult matter to get them out hear for I' am satisfied the majority of them will not make anything this year over a surport so I beleave they will begin to want to go whar they can get better wages but I leave this subject to some future time. I know that you want to hear more about what has become Of the people. All my famley came out of the ware safe. W. H. Boyd's are a.ll well they lost thir youngest son in 63 his name was Laurens Wash.ington he was a nice boy & Lizy has never got over it yet for she thought a heap of him, their other children are all grown. Your uncle John Boyd & moost of his famley.are dead. Samuel L. Boyd his oldest son was killed on the coast of this state the first of the ware. Mary & Lizy his daughters died in 63 & he died in N. C. about the time of surender so their are only two of the famley lef that iii your, aunt Sallie & Wm. their youngest son. Your uncle James Boyd's famley.are all well and his children grown he lost his oldest son John Wesley in the battle around Richmond in 62 so this ends!'!.!.the famley connection it would be too tedious a task for me to give a list of friends killed & lost in the ware surfice to say that our lost was heavy & there are many fond harts bearing in silenc the burning greaf that their sons are gone &, nothing gained by their loss. o we grive with you in your sour affliction in los s of your children but not as those without hope & as you say it will not be long before we will all meet whar I hope there will be no more

, '

parting I hope that you & Mary win bear up your loss with that christian fortitud which never forsakes us in no tryal however sevear it may be this is the honest prayr of your father & mother. 0 James you don't have no 1dea how bad we want to see you, but we have but little hope of seeing ,you again in this wurld for we' are far apart & liie so u:IlCertain & old adge keeps creeping on so it be can't count on' a very long time to stay hear. But we do want you to come and see us if you can one time so we hope that you can spair that much time before long. So you must accept our love you & Mary & ·aU the children. So I mUElt end this letter for I cannot pen my feelings to you for they are too full of emotion. So good by"

Benj. Blackerby ,

There are many unmarked, lost grav~s in this very old cemetery, although many other ."unmarked ... graves are known to members of the families. I was advised by a descendant of

the above Yates men that they fought in the Civil War for the Union yet they lie in unmarked graves. Four other graves said to be of a Dr. Whitehead, his wife and pqsSiblytwo children. They are almost lost yet it seems someone would be related to them and interested enough to mark their resting places. Lois Hodges Canfield, Rt. l,Box 56A, Bismarck, Ark,

My grandfather, William Jackson Williams, died at Onset, Arkansas (Marion Co.)in1892. Can't find this community on the map, nor anyone who has ever heard of it. Could anyone help me locate this community and possibly a newspaper that might have carried his obituary.
