Smart Accountability

Differentiated accountability allows the state to treat schools placed in school improvement under NCLB differently with:

• New designations that better reflect the degree to which schools are meeting “adequate yearly progress”

• Interventions that target the indentified schools’ needs

Smart Accountability LabelsArkansas’s plan utilizes six overall categories:

• Achieving Schools

• Alert Status Schools

• Targeted Improvement Schools

• Whole School Improvement Schools

• Intensive Targeted Improvement Schools

• Intensive Whole School Improvement Schools

• State Directed Improvement Schools

Label: Achieving Schools

These schools meet all standards for Adequate Yearly Progress for this

year.

Label: Alert

For the first year, these schools did not meet all standards for Adequate

Yearly Progress.

Label: Targeted Improvement

Schools that do not meet Adequate Yearly Progress in math and/or literacy and miss the annual measurable goal (AMO) for 25 percent or fewer groups and do not miss the AMO for

combined population resulting in school improvement years one through three (1-3) will

be labeled as in “Targeted Improvement.” TI-1, TI-2 and TI-3 Corrective Action

This correlates to School Improvement Years 1, 2 and 3; Year 3 correlates to the corrective action

phase under No Child Left Behind.

Label: Whole School Improvement

Schools that do not meet Adequate Yearly Progress in math and/or literacy and miss the

AMO for combined population and/or more than 25 percent of groups resulting in school

improvement years one through three (1-3) will be labeled as in “Whole School Improvement.”

WSI-1, WSI-2 and WSI-3 Corrective Action

This correlates to School Improvement Years 1, 2 and 3; Year 3 correlates to the corrective action

phase under No Child Left Behind.

Label: Targeted Intensive Improvement

Schools that do not meet Adequate Yearly Progress in math and/or literacy and miss the

AMO for 25 percent or fewer groups and do not miss AMO for combined population resulting in school improvement for four (4) or more years

will be labeled as in “Targeted Intensive Improvement.”

TII-4, TII-5: RestructuringThis correlates to School Improvement Years 4

and 5, which was in the restructuring phase under No Child Left Behind.

Label: Whole School Intensive Improvement

Schools that do not meet Adequate Yearly Progress in math and/or literacy and miss the

Improvement.”WSII-4, WSII-5: Restructuring

This correlates to School Improvement Years 4 and 5, which was in the restructuring phase under

No Child Left Behind.
