• Alternative treatments are available, such as palliative

care and hospices. We do not have to kill the patient to killthe symptoms. Nearly all pain can be relieved.

• There is no ‘right’ to be killed and there are real dangersof ‘slippery slopes’ . Opening the doors to voluntaryeuthanasia could lead to non-voluntary and involuntaryeuthanasia, by giving doctors the power to decide when apatient’s life is not worth living. In the Netherlands in 1990around 1,000 patients were killed without their request

• We could never truly control it. Reports from theNetherlands, where euthanasia and physician-assistedsuicide are legal, reveal that doctors do not always report it.

• The assumption that patients should have a right to die

would impose on doctors a duty to kill , thus restricting theautonomy of the doctor. Also, a‘right to die’ for some peoplemight well become a‘duty to die’ by others, particularly thosewho are vulnerable or dependent upon others.

• Humanitarians and the religious amongst them believe that mercy killing oreuthanasia is morally wrong. They believe that only God has the right to end lifebecause only he was responsible for the same. They also argue that euthanasia isas good as homicide or murder that simply cannot be justified under the banner ofnamesake arguments

• Euthanasia can lead to a steep decline in the quality of medical care administeredto patients. Doctors and medical professionals will take it easy on themselves andmay do little or zilch to actually rescue patients from the venomous jaws of aserious illness.

• Euthanasia is power, the power to end the life of another. One of the biggestarguments against euthanasia is that this power can be easily manipulated to fulfillthe ulterior motives of conniving individuals who always manage to find a place forthemselves in society. After all, there really is no mercy in killing!

• A hospital and doctors exist to save the lives of people suffering from illnesses, not end it. Advanced medical technology and knowledgeable medicalprofessionals have made credible breakthroughs in the battles against illnessesand diseases.

• Against the will of God

Religious people don't argue that we can't kill ourselves, or get others to do it.They know that we can do it because God has given us free will. Their argumentis that it would be wrong for us to do so.

They believe that every human being is the creation of God, and that thisimposes certain limits on us. Our lives are not only our lives for us to do with aswe see fit.

To kill oneself, or to get someone else to do it for us, is to deny God, and to denyGod's rights over our lives and his right to choose the length of our lives and theway our lives end.

Many religions think that euthanasia isimmoral. Some religionsregard it as atype of murder.• The officialRoman Catholic Church is against euthanasia and says it is a

crime. Protestants, on the other side, take a more liberalview.• Hindus think that, even though helping a person end a painful life may be

good, itinterferes with thecycle of death and rebirth .• In Islam all forms of euthanasia areforbidden .•

In Japan more than half of all Shintoists think that you should be allowed tohelp a person die if they ask for it.
