• Umayyad family took power after death of Ali Founded Umayyad dynasty (we’ll hear more about them later)– Moved capital from Medina to Damascus

• Umayyads’ actions divide Islam– Some Arabs unhappy with new capital (too far)– Others thought Umayyads abandoned earlier
