February 2018 It’s Pal-entine’s Day! Happy “Pal”entine’s Day to all our camp friends! We all know camp friends are the best friends right!? Ever stop to think about why? I think one of the reasons we make such great friends at Appel Farm is that you don’t have to “fit in” here, you simply get to belong. Everyone is accepted just as they are! Our camp friends see us at our worst (like when we have morning breath or feel homesick), and at our best (performing in a Friday Night Concert or helping in the dining hall). Friendships forged at camp are unique because not only do they represent what is good in others, but also what is good in ourselves. They remind us that we can be ourselves, no matter how different we may feel sometimes, and still be LOVED! You are so very very LOVED by us! I am so grateful you are part of our Appel Farm family. As the world around us focuses on romantic love this Valentine’s Day, let’s not forget the love we share between friends. So, be a true pal this February 14th and celebrate “Pal”entine’s Day by sending some love and positivity to anyone you consider a friend, but especially your camp ones! The Appel Farm Library - All Year Long!We love sharing art during the summer - whether it be in an art show, in a performance, or suggesting a library book to a friend. We want to keep that going all year long, so here are just a few recommendations from our Appel Farm winter team, in music, theatre, literature, and visual art, for you to enjoy! Do you have a favorite thing to share with our camp community? Email us at [email protected] to pass it on!

Cara’s Pick: The Vanderbeekers of 141st Streetby Karina Yan Glaser

The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It’s practically another member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have eleven days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Mr. Beiderman just how wonderful they are. And all is fair in love and war when it comes to keeping their home.

Amy’s Pick: The Great British Bake-OffAvailable on Netflix

Amy Says: “Sometimes it’s nice to turn on Netflix and just see nice people bake pretty-looking things and not get ruined by the stress of competition. Join Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood (yes, those are their REAL NAMES) as they judge endless cakes, pies, and tarts in the nicest cooking competition show you will literally ever see. I recommend Series 5 or Series 6 (on Netflix, Seasons 1 or 3) to see my all-time favorite bakers: I will always love you, Chetna, Norman, and Nadiya!

Tracy’s Pick: The “Aladdin” Broadway Cast RecordingBy the Cast of Aladdin on Broadway

Did you know that our very own Appel Farm Alumni, Olivia Donalson, is currently touring North America in the cast of Aladdin? If you saw Aladdin when it came to your town, you saw Olivia up on stage, as “The Fortune Teller”, dancing and singing her heart out, just as

she did at Appel Farm. We love to celebrate the accomplishments of our Appel Farmers, so grab the Aladdin cast album and have a Disney singalong with all of your camp friends!

Jennie’s Pick: Letters to Nowhere by (our very own Appel Farm Staff Member!) Julie Cross

From the International Bestselling Author of the Tempest series: A mature YA contemporary set in the tough world of Elite Gymnastics. Seventeen year old Karen Campbell has just lost both her

parents in a tragic car accident. Grief-stricken and alone, her gymnastics coach opens his home to Karen, providing her a place to live while she continues to train, working toward a spot on the

world championship team. Coach Bentley’s only child, seventeen-year-old Jordan is good looking and charming enough to scare away a girl like Karen—someone who has spent ten

times more hours on balance beams and uneven bars than talking or even thinking about boys. But the two teens share a special connection almost immediately...

That’s Olivia - front right, with a

few of her Aladdin castmates!

They had been talking about it for days. My friend, Hariet, has often been aware of many impending disasters. She had heard about it. Then there was the postman who would often stop along his route for a few seconds and chat with me. He told me about it and he ought to know.

It was, so to speak, in the air. But I didn’t believe it. How can the weather folks tell me that there will be snow? How can they say this when the day is so clear and fresh, and the sky is so blue?

Now, just to be clear, I love snow. I have always loved snow, from the time I was little. Snow storms and blizzards meant a day or two off from school. To play. The roads became quiet for a while. I like that. The world becomes blank and quiet. And I do, too.

But, but, but the weather people forecast snow in a day that is clear, sunshine on a rainy day or clouds when there is only blue in the sky. That’s ridiculous. But much more often than not, these weather folks are right.

So the question is: why do I keep distrusting these weather people? The reason is that I just can’t imagine what these folks are predicting.

I take imagination seriously. Imagination is one of the things that makes us human. For example, we are the only species that knows that there is a future. So many things require us to imagine. Every time we do something that is in our mind and make it real, we are using our imagination. Whether we build a building, throw a pot in ceramics, choreograph a dance, or begin to paint a picture we are making something that is first in our minds. That is imagination. We all have it as human beings. We all use it as artists.

Imagination was the subject of this article. The snow, weather people and my disbelief in forecast was the first stage of this piece that you are reading. Then, when I began writing, new things appeared—things that I had not planned for. Maybe it is the back and forth between planning something and letting it evolve on its own that is what we artists do. Again, it all begins with imagination.

So what does this all have to do with the weather in Woodstock, New York on February 7, 2018? For one thing it reminds me that I am not always as imaginative as I think I am. Sometimes I get stuck in the present and can’t imagine anything else. This is pretty important.

Sarvananda Bluestone has been a college professor, published author and professional psychic. In addition he has been the Head Counselor and a Theatre Director at Appel Farm for 31 summers. He originally came so that his daughter, Hira, could come as a camper, and in 2013, his grand daughter, Lucy, finally came to camp!

With imagination we can change the world. Just like an architect can build a building after he has seen it in his mind, so we can build a human world where people respect each other as humans. We work on this one at Appel Farm—campers, counselors, and directors.

By nine o’clock this morning there were absolutely no snow flakes in the sky. By ten o’clock the world was filled with snow.

Who could imagine that?

Trees are all muted With the mask of falling snow Gentle tinkling sound.

1. When were you at camp?

I attended camp from 2005-2008.

2. What was your major and what were some of your minors?

I was a theatre major for all seven sessions that I attended Appel Farm. My minors were all over the place - I did guitar, sculpture, rock vocals, dance for musical theatre, improv, video, and drawing.

3. What was camp like when you were a camper and what are some of your favorite memories?

When I was a camper, Appel Farm was the greatest place on Earth! I made some of my best friends at camp, and got to totally disconnect with who I was at school and throw myself in to the things I was passionate about. My favorite camp memories include: performing as Bette in “The Marriage of Bette and Boo” with Scott Frelund under the direction of Louise Schwarz, singing “Bohemian Rhapsody” on the patio on the last night of camp, and filling the dining hall with balloons as part of our CIT prank.

4. Where are you living now, and what are you doing for work and fun?

I live in New York City and work as a television producer. I’ve worked on shows like Food Network’s Chopped, TruTV’s Hack My Life, and ID Discovery’s The Perfect Murder. For fun, I like to see movies, go out to restaurants around the city, and hang out with my friends!

5. What advice or suggestions do you have for present day Appel Farm campers?

The best advice I have for current campers is to keep in touch with your camp friends when you aren’t together! Appel Farm friendships are the best - plus, when you’re older and looking to start your career, you’ll have a huge network of friends in all sorts of creative fields!

Save the Date! Another Appel Farm Alumni Wedding

by Jennie Quinn, Associate Director

Over my 15 years as a Camp Director, I watched so many of our campers and staff meet the loves of their lives. I wrote about these loves a few years back, marveling at the speed of camp courtship, squeezed in between caring for bunklings and teaching classes and Golfball and the Carnival... But here I am, looking at a Save the Date card announcing the wedding of couple of alumni, whom I adore, and they are getting married at Appel Farm!

It’s kind of a thing. So many people are falling in love at camp, and at least some of them return to their campy beginnings to seal the deal! Are you thinking of the Dinner Dance? Streamers in the Pavillion? Think again! Alumni weddings at Appel Farm are more beautiful and magical than you’d believe... Unless you’ve been to a few.

I have, and more than a few times. It’s one of my favorite perks of a job filled with perks! I’ve watched my friends get married, beloved former campers whom I met when they were little kids, counelors I grew to love over the course of those intense 9 weeks of camp each summer, and right here where we all met. It’s really special.

So, Ray and Christina, your wedding date is officially saved! I can’t wait to see the beautiful, magical wedding you two create! I’ll be the one smiling from ear to ear, crying, loving the both of you, and cherishing the special place you met.

Appel Farm for love. Appel Farm for life.
