READING YOUR BIBLE FOR FUN AND INSPIRATION
“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction,
and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be
proficient, equipped for every good work.” (II Timothy 3:16)
I received my first Bible when I was in the 3rd grade – a Christmas gift from my
parents that year. And, so began my faith life journey with a fondness for The Word of
God, these past 58 years. I guess I was somewhat a bit unorthodox in my fascination
with the Scriptures. At an early age, much to the criticism of my Sunday school classmates,
(“scribbling” in the Bible was a sin) I was already marking and underlining bits and pieces of
Scripture for future reference. I mean, if my Mother could do it in her college psychology class text
books, why couldn’t I do the same in my Bible? Therefore, I reached the “peak” of my 3rd grade
logic.
As long as I can remember, the Biblical accounts have always fascinated me. So I read the
biblical accounts with my grade school inquisitive and anticipatory eyes. Later as I matured, I
read the New Testament as a “text book”, filled with facts about Jesus and the accompanying
Christian teachings from both HE and the apostolic writers. But still, I read the biblical accounts just
as biblical accounts and the teachings of Jesus just as teachings of Jesus. However, God wasn’t
finished with me yet. So as I progressed as a “preacher”, I learned a couple of things about how
to let the Bible become a more meaningful portion of my individual faith life and learning to let it
grow in my heart and mind with great fondness towards God’s great love for you, and for me. So
here goes . . .
1. Learn to accept the fact that every account of the Old and New Testaments is more than
just being an account. That’s because as much as there is the obvious action in the account,
there also is the meaning of the account for us, such as David and Goliath. This account is more
than the recollection of how the boy David killed a giant Philistine. (I Samuel 17:1-49) Since David
trusted God during that dark time in his life, why shouldn’t we learn to do the same?
2. Every account in the Old and New Testaments, provocatively describes both the reality of
humanity’s sinfulness and the awesome reality of God’s grace, as God constantly intercedes on
our stumbling behalf, to keep us on the true way to The Kingdom of God.
3. When I read my Bible, I have learned to read it with great expectations. In other words, I
always expect to learn something from it that I didn’t know before. And you know what the Holy
Spirit has never let me down! God’s Word is not just a form of literature, because it is the living and
true Word of God to bring forth life! (Isaiah 55:10-11)
Thanks be to God!
Your Brother in Christ, Pastor Mark

Dear Ascension Lutheran Church, 2017 was a year of renewal and
rebuilding. After hurricane Matthew took its rage on southern Haiti, many of us worked diligently rebuilding homes,
families, and faith. It was a year to reflect on: where is God amongst all the devastation that is hurled at
Haiti? Remember...whatever God brings you to, he will
bring you through. Our theme for 2018 is form the mission journal: Less of Me More of Him. Join us this year in rebuilding
relationships and faith. Relying on God who blesses us and gives us the strength to continue. Giving
More of Him for others to see, being the hands and feet of Jesus. Reflecting and walking in His steps. Who do you see when you look in the mirror? May
the reflection that others see, be Jesus in you. “May we discover that less is really more. Less od you will
mean more of His peace, His generosity, His kindness, His humility, His courage, His
unconditional love and grace. Pray with us: that we continue to grow and
sponsor the Nutrition Center; for new sponsors for our children; for PR Cheryl who is planning on
coming to Haiti to spend time with HCI’s mission; for our teams (Less of Me More of Him): for our
Evangelism to reach more for Christ and open hearts to a relationship of grace and love and for our
fundraising projects. I pray for each of you, for your continued love and support.
I see Jesus in you! Walk this journey with us and let it be Less of Me More of Him.
In His ever-loving Service

Dear Ascension Lutheran Church,
I want to personally thank you for your partnership
with IHOPKC. Your financial support enables us to
meet the roughly $5,000,000 a year cost to keep the
prayer room going and beaming to the world for
free. From the sound system to the electricity to the
technology to the really small stipend we give to
singers and musicians, it adds up to about
$5,000,000 every year. And you know what?
Jesus is worthy of this seemingly extravagant
display of affection.
Around the world, even in nations closed to the
Gospel, people are singing the Scriptures, praying
for the breaking in of the kingdom on earth as it is
in heaven and declaring the beauty of Jesus and His
plan to make all the wrong things right. This is what
you are doing with us. It’s a huge beautiful vision
done in a way that only Jesus could have
orchestrated. A small room in Kansas City sings
and prays. Technology broadcasts this to the world
and lives are forever changed.
Thank You.
Gratefully yours,
Luis Cataldo, Director of Partner Relations
Thank You to Representative Gary Tauchen for providing
Ascension’s new US flag which flies proudly in the breeze.

Thank you to Joy Daebler for embroidering the baptismal hankie for the John Mitchler
baptism and to Phyllis Peebles for completing the baptismal certificates.

Youth Event last month at Silver Birch Ranch Below is a sample of their experiences
My experience at Winter Jam was amazing,
From the leap of faith to the moving speaker
and singers, just amazing. The people were
super friendly and the food was really good.
We got to do so much fun stuff and I think
we all learned a thing or two.
Abby Daniels
Everyone seemed to share a close bond with
each other. I was always talking to someone
new and everyone seemed comfortable around
one another.
Abby Demerath
On February 2-4 our youth group went to
Winter Jam at Silver Birch Ranch. In my
opinion, the best part about the weekend was
the powerful and touching speeches by Jason
Kemper. Also, I really liked horseback riding
because it was super fun and I never did it
before. I learned so much and I can’t wait to
go back next year!
Autumn Lorenz
The best part about Winter Jam was the
awesome activities. There were sooo many fun
activities to do! My favorite thing to do was
horseback riding. It was kind of scary,
because my horse was huge, but it was still
really fun. The most touching part of winter
Jam was when we were at the chapel,
because when Jason (our speaker) was
speaking during the sermon, he has a very
loud voice and the words that he was saying
really sank into your brain.
Ava Lorenz
First off Silver Birch was super fun! We had
lots of crazy adventures and did really cool
stuff. But thats not what I was told to write
about. I was asked to write about something
that stuck out. After thinking about it, I
think we would always pray before we did
something or had an event. To me that was
really cool. We prayed for courage, strength,
guidance, safety, and lots of other things.
Another thing that stuck out was, you either
believe in Jesus Christ or you don’t. You can’t
just “kind of” believe. That hit me hard. Do I
truly believe or just “kind of”? Overall Silver
Birch was awesome and these were the two
thing that stuck out to me.
P.S.-We should do a Summer Retreat :)
Bradley Demerath
I had a great time at Silver Birch Ranch for
the confirmation retreat. It was my 1st time
there. I went tubing down the big hills, went
cross country skiing and ate lots of good
food. I liked the speakers and was really
touched by the words and the nice people
that were there that weekend.
Patty Lorenz
I was very excited to have the opportunity
to attend Winter Jam. I had a blast! There
was never a dull moment. The worship
services were exciting and full of wonderful
music praising our Lord. I was amazed at the
closeness of our youth group and was
impressed with all their kind words and
actions. I enjoyed watching them meet new
people and share God’s love. We all left
feeling closer to God. Thank You Ascension!

I am 50 years old, divorced and have one son who is
twenty five years old. I was raised in Seymour on a
small dairy farm with my mom and dad and seven
sisters and two brothers. I was raised Catholic in St
John’s parish in Seymour. When I got married I
attended my wife’s church, Emmanuel Lutheran in
Seymour. We raised our son in that church. After the
divorce I continued to attend the church and became
a member. I became more involved because of my
son and when they started a band I was able to
rediscover my passion for playing drums. Toni’s
sister Denise{ Dee Dee} was a fill in piano player at
Emmanuel and told me about Praise with Passion on
Sunday nights at Ascension. I attended and felt
welcome from the start. Because of a change in
service times I was unable to stay at Emmanuel so I
attended a service at Ascension. I was welcomed into
the Bible study and was allowed to play drums with
the praise team! I truly feel at home.
Jake is from Kimberly and Misty is
from Shiocton. We met in high school
and got married in 2015. Jake is an
insulator at L&C insulation and Misty
is an auditor at JJ Keller. We
currently live in Navarino. We had
our son John Thomas in December
2017. We enjoy spending time as a
family and the outdoors! We are
excited to become members of
Ascension Lutheran Church!
Welcome New Members
