Pastor Mark Johnson
In that day you will say: "Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that
his name is exalted. Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things; let this be known to all the world. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people
of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you." ~ Isaiah 12:4-6
“Now Thank We All Our God” Now thank we all our God
With hearts and hands and voices,
Who wondrous things has done,
In whom His world rejoices;
Who from our mothers’ arms
Has blest us on our way
With countless gifts of love
And still is ours today.
Oh, may this bounteous God
Through all our life be near us,
With ever joyful hearts
And blessed peace to cheer us
And keep us in His grace
And guide us when perplexed
And free us from all harm
In this world and the next.
All praise and thanks to God
The Father now be given,
The Son, and Him who reigns
With them in highest heaven,
The one eternal God,
Whom earth and heav’n adore;
For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.
Dear Friends of Christ, With the exception of “A Mighty Fortress is our God”, the hymn “Now Thank We All Our God” is the most widely sung hymn in Germany. Like so many other great hymns, it was forged in the crucible of the Thirty Years’ War. Martin Rinkart was the only pastor in the walled city of Eilenberg. Many refugees
fled there, hoping the walls would protect them, only to see the city overrun by Swedes, Austrians, and Swedes again. In the crowded conditions, hunger and plague were chronic problems. In 1673 Rinkart conducted funerals for five thousand residents – including his
wife. So when he prays, “Guide us when perplexed,” he is not talking about minor inconveniences. Yet thanksgiving erupts from this stately song. The tune, by Johann Cruger, was introduced with the text in 1644 while the war still raged. It has a majesty and a resolve that
few other works can match. We can thank God even during the most trying times. We can know God is with us “in this world and the next.” (Taken from “The One Year Book of Hymns”)
Have a blessed Thanksgiving,
The Good News November 3
I hope you were able to attend the Fall Festival! The kids had a great time and lots of candy was eaten! Thank you for all of your donations and to the volunteers who helped make this event so successful. Have you been to the Yuma Children’s Art Festival? This year it will be held on Saturday, November 2nd in downtown Yuma. The street will be filled with crafts and projects for the children to participate in and it’s completely FREE! Yuma Lutheran will have a booth. If you come down, stop by to say hi! We will be closed on Monday, November 11th in observance of Veteran’s Day. The staff will be gone from November 24th – 26th at the Lutheran Educator’s Conference in California. The theme of the conference is Spiritually Charged. We look forward to growing and becoming stronger as a staff.

The Good News November 4
THANKSGIVING! A special day set aside to focus on being thankful and for remembering all God has done for us—to thank HIM for His wonderful blessings! Sometimes we may be tempted to think of giving thanks as something we do for God.
Actually, gratitude is a gift God has given
to US! Scripture is full of passages about giving
thanks and praise. It could fill a book! (Actually is already has! :) ) God commands or directs us many times throughout scripture to be thankful and to give Him thanks—but NOT because HE needs it! God doesn’t need anything from us. But He
knows that WE need to be thankful in order
to live fulfilled lives and to be fully the
people He created us to be. WE NEED
GRATITUDE!! (BTW—God doesn’t need
anything from us but it brings Him great pleasure when we give our hearts and our gratitude to Him!)
There have been a lot of studies done in the secular world that support the importance of gratitude: it improves emotional well-being by helping to relieve stress; is linked to fewer signs of heart
disease; helps fight cancer and disease in general; improves relationships and makes people feel happier; builds a positive outlook and creates optimism. And on and on.
Of course, God has always known about those benefits. (After all—He invented it all!) That’s part of why He wants us to practice gratitude. But there are many other, even more important benefits of gratitude. God tells us to “rejoice always, pray continually,
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is
God’s will for you in Christ Jesus”. 1 Thess
5:18. When we truly understand the heart of God, that He loves us with a love that
endures forever, it becomes clear that a
thankful heart is what He desires for us
because it’s what’s best for us—no matter
the circumstance. Gratitude can lift up our
hearts and help us see through the tough
times and enable us to depend more fully on
God and His perfect plan for us. And remember—the enemy comes only
to steal, kill and destroy. Satan does not
want us grateful. Being grateful opens the
door to God and His presence and blessings
and comfort and slams the door to the
enemy! Being grateful is part of spiritual
warfare! Being weak, sinful humans, we do not
FEEL like giving thanks in the midst of the
really tough times. But gratitude, like love,
is not always a feeling! It’s easy to feel gratitude for the good times. But other times we just need to give it up to God and ask for His grace and mercy in giving us grateful
hearts in spite of the circumstances—and then to TRUST HIM! How many times—after coming through rough waters, have you looked back and seen how God carried you through and brought you to a much better place on the other side of those waters?! And you realize how much you have benefitted from the whole experience. It is then that we can FEEL gratitude! But in the meantime,
we need to receive the gift of gratitude from
God regardless of how we feel.
In addition, Gratitude can bring us the
peace of contentment. But godliness with
contentment (that’s gratitude) is great gain” I
Tim. 6:6 And Gratitude can help us turn
our focus on God and away from our
troubles and ourselves. You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you because
he trusts in you. Is 26:3
And guess what?! Gratitude can take us
a long way in our quest for
CONNECTING PEOPLE TO CHRIST!
When you cultivate a spirit of thankfulness,
it will spill over into your relationships. When people see how God can give you peace in the midst of trials and see your grateful and joyful attitude, they will wonder
what’s up with you! And God will open a door for you to tell the about love of Jesus and the peace that passes understanding that only God can provide!
“I will give thanks to You, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all Your wonderful deeds” Psalm 9:1
THANK YOU, LORD, FOR the GIFT
OF GRATITUDE!!
GRATEFUL FOR GRATITUDE!
The Good News November 5
“And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the
just.” ~ Luke 14: 14
“I hope to see you soon, and then we will talk personally.” ~ 3 John 1:14
Do you know your neighbors or even one neighbor? Have you ever ‘served’ your neighbor? During the “Red Letter Challenge” serving was one of the 5 targets we as Christians were challenged to practice. In one of the sermons it was stated that serving others can help you experience the greatest satisfaction and fulfillment a Christian can experience. Have you experienced what this means? By reaching out to others and serving them...and not being
repaid for your CARE-ing... helps you identify with Christ. There are many different avenues of serving and many different places...but let us focus on serving those who live close to us...our neighbors. There are bigger stages to get involved in and with others involved...but why not make a difference in someone’s life that can be more personal? In today’s society many of us could just as well be living on an island for as many people we know around where we live. Whether it be a house, apartment, or condominium. (Probably our winter friends in the 55 and older communities are an exception
to this notion. They probably DO know their neighbors!) Prayerfully consider who may have needs that need to be met. Is there a single parent that could use some assistance with their children...an elderly person that may appreciate a meal or a visit sometime...someone that just moved in and you can help them become acquainted...and an unkempt yard that you could assist with...etc. In all of these situations you want to be reaching out with these intentions that you cannot be repaid for. You are reaching out because you are modeling what Jesus has done for us...as He has served us while we are still sinners. We cannot repay God for all
that He has done for us. Reaching out to a person that is lonely can be one of the greatest services you can provide. I recently saw this on facebook: “Loneliness doesn’t come from being alone; it comes from feeling that nobody CARE-s.” What if the person next door to you feels this way? You may be surprised how many people of all ages are lonely. What if the greatest way you could
serve would be to simply CARE for that person...to take the time to listen? I have often felt that if EVERY person took the time to reach out to ONE person...what a better world this
would be! It would certainly be a KINDER place to live! Who is that person that YOU could make a difference in their life? You would be God’s witness. God’s plan from the beginning was that we would be His representatives. Through Jesus, we are called just like the Israelites to be a light in this world. We could brighten the world one friendship at a time. One CARE-ing moment at a time. You may feel that your gifts don’t include serving in this way. Try praying to God to give you the opportunity to reach out to that neighbor...and then to fill you with the words needed to begin
your CARE-ing. If it is His will He will guide your time together and you will be just as blessed as the person that you are reaching out to. Remember...many times when you CARE it is actually just listening to that neighbor who just needs someone to talk to! As you serve those around you they will take notice of the type of person you are. They will recognize your CARE-ing spirit. With time they will recognize your faith...and the Holy Spirit working through you. You will be able to point them to Christ as you shine your light. “You are like a light for the whole world...In the same way your light must shine before people, so that
they will see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14,16. God challenges us to bless, benefit, and befriend those who cannot repay us for our interest, concern, and kindness. What better time than this Thanksgiving season to take that leap of faith...and be that sunshine of light in your neighbor’s day! Experience the greatest satisfaction and fulfillment that a Christian can experience...be a friend and follow 3 John 1:14, “I hope to see you soon, and then we will talk personally.” To God Be the Glory! Happy Thanksgiving!

they then spend time with the Lord in prayer.
What a comfort to those in need! Contact the
church office with your email and you can
become a valuable prayer warrior!
