PART – A

PLAN

1. New Techniques –

Remedial Courses – The department will formulate it’s remedial course as per the requirement of the student

Awareness drives: Awareness drives to be organized in different schools for various academic, socio-economic and environmental issues.

Training Programme: To organize a training programme for the women folk of the village Dikchak.

Cleanliness Drive: To organise cleanliness drive in the neighbourhood of the college and the adopted village Dikchak.

3. Infrastructure Development

To construct the remaining two rooms of the First Floor of the RCC Building.

New books for the library are to be purchased.

The Department of WPT & BC is to be pursued for the disbursement of the grant for the construction of the girls’ hostel.

Bamboo fence is to be put up along the immediate boundary of the college.

4. Official Activity

To pursue the Director of Higher Education(DHE) for the Government N.O.C. for B.Com Part –I and Government Concurrence for the subject of Information Technology and Hindi.

To approach the Gauhati University authority for the Temporary Affiliation for B.Com Part-I and permission for B.com Part-II.

To approach the Gauhati University authority for the inspection for Permanent Affiliation.

To approach the Gauhati University authority for the Examination Centre for B. Com Part-II.

To appoint a faculty in place of Late Dr. Dhanjit Medhi.

OUTCOME ACHIVED BY THE END OF THE YEAR

The departments have framed the remedial course to meet the demand of the students and accordingly the faculty members took the classes.

The departments took the tutorial classes as per the routine. Some departments also took extra calsses for the benefit of the students.

Department of Economics took their major students for a survey on ‘The Problems, Functioning and Financial Help of The Self Help Groups of Three Neighbouring Villages’. A project Report was prepared on the basis of the survey.

Department of Geography made the students prepare model and chart on the theme ‘Sustainable Development’. Later a competition was held among the students during the college week. Mr. Dharma Ram Deka from the Department of Geography and Ms. Doli Thakuria from the Department of Education gave a cash prize of Rs 1000/- (One Thousand) only to the winner.

As per departmental Schedule mentioned in the Prospectus and Academic Calendar the Departments organized seminars and workshops for which experts were invited for deliberation.

For the benefit of the students, a number of departments of the college conducted ‘Intra-Class Paper presentation Sessions’ from time to time where students participated and presented paper under the guidance of departmental teachers.

As a part of continuous evaluation, the college conducted two unit tests for all the classes and the students. Similarly one selection test for the major course of the TDC 1st Year students was organised in the beginning of the session..

Like previous years this year also a number of departments of the college conducted extension programmes in its feeder schools. As a part of this extension the Department of English took Classes in Sankardev Sishu Bidya Niketan.

A Book Fair was organized in the college premises in collaboration with ‘SATIRTHA’ to inculcate the reading habits among the students.

Extension Lectures were organized at the feeder schools to raise the standard of the input.

A Training Programme on ‘Floriculture’ was organized at Dikchak where the village folk actively participated in it.

A cleanliness drive was organized by the students union in the neighbourhood of the college. The college students participated in it in large numbers.

A Workshop of Sattriya Dance, an Indian Classical Dance form recognised by Sangeet Natak Academy, was organized during the summer vacation under the aegis of Kalabhumi, the cultural organisation of Sonapur college. Eminent personalities from the field were invited to conduct the training. The workshop was co-ordinated by, Ms. Doli Thakuria, a faculty member of Education.

The college received the N.O.C. from the Government to open the Commerce stream for Part-I and Government concurrence for the subject of Information Technology and Hindi.

For the Permanent Affiliation of the Arts stream under Gauhati University Prof. T.K. Dutta, Department of Mathematics, Gauhati University, inspected the college on 2nd march, 2009. The college has already received the permission resolution from the Gauhati University authority, which will help the college in coming under 12(B) of UGC. The College is yet to get the Government concurrence in this regard, for which the college has already applied to the Office of the Directorate of Higher Education.

The college has already got the permission of B.Com Part-I and Part-II examination Center.

Ms. Rumi Doloi has been appointed to fill up the vacant post created by the sad demise of the late Dr. Dhanjit Medhi.

The construction of the remaining two rooms of the first floor of the RCC building is completed.

PART – B

1. ACTIVITIES REFLECTING THE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE

INSTITUTION :-

Dr. Dhanjit Medhi Memorial Seminar was held on 18th September, 2009. Dr. Mohammad Taher, Retired HOD of Geography, Gauhati University delivered the lecture on ‘Evolution of Identity and its Crisis with Special reference to NE India’. Dr. Irshad Ali, Retired Professor, Department of Anthropology, Gauhati University was present as the Guest of Honour. The topic itself reflects the one of the important goal of the college i.e. the spreading the feeling of nationality among the new generation.

The College organized a fifteen-day Satriya Dance Workshop in the college premises from 6th to 22nd July, 2009 under the banner of Kalabhumi, the cultural organisation of Sonapur College, in order to reflect the goal ‘preservation and development of traditional culture’. Ms Doli Thakuria, Lecturer, Department of Education coordinated the workshop. EminentSatriya Dance experts Mr. Narayan Kalita, Mr. Khagen Kalita and Mr. Ananda Muktiar conducted the training. The valedictory function was graced by two eminent personalities of the Satriya Dance form Nritycharya

Mr. Jatin Goswami and and Sangeet Chudamoni Dr. Ananda Mohan Bhagawati.

Like the previous years, the department of Hindi celebrated Hindi Divas on September 14, in order to make the RASHTRA BHASA more popular among the students and the faculty, where the students and faculty members of the college participated actively. Different competitions were also organised in this connection and prizes were given to the winners.

Like previous years two issues of all four wall magazines were released during this academic session. Students from all classes contributed to all wall magazines.

A Book Fair was organized in the college premises in Collaboration with ‘SATIRTHA’ a socio-literary organisation.

2. NEW ACADEMIC PROGRAMME INITIATED:-

The different departments of the college conducted tutorial classes.

For the upliftment of the students of the feeder schools various extension services were initiated by the department of English.

The Department of English organized some classes at Sankardev Sishu Bidya Niketan.

The Department of Geography observed World Environment Day in Tamulikuchi High School on 5th June, 2009 with a day long programme.

3. INNOVATION IN CURRICULAR DESIGN AND TRANSACTION

The curriculum is designed by Guwahati University.

The various departments undertake various innovative measures to familiarize the students with the new course. The students are made to comprehend the new curricula like seminar paper presentation, group discussion, audio-video means and so on.

4. INTERDISCIPLINARY PROGRAMMES STARTED:-

As per the guidelines of the Gauhati University, Environmental Studies is taught in the 2nd year degree classes, which has been treated as an

interdisciplinary subject in the college. The faculty members of all departments are allotted their own course to teach the students.

In commerce stream, the different departments like English, Assamese, Economics, and Information Technology take up classes to transact the curriculum in the respective fields.

5. EXAMINATION REFORM IMPLEMENTED:-

The university examinations are held as per guidelines laid down by the University authority. No such reformation has taken place during the session.

The Internal Examinations are held as per the following pattern:

(a) Major selection test

(b) Unit Test – 2

(c) Pre Final Test – 1

7. INITIATIVE TOWARDS FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME :-

The college has always encouraged the faculty to go for research programme like M. Phil and Ph.D.

Two faculty members Mr. Biman Patowary, HOD of Geography and Ms Mausumi Bhagowoti , Lecturer, Department of Assamese were conferred Ph.D. by Gauhati University.

Two faculty members, Ms Pallabi Goswami, HOD of Hindi and Ms Sathi Bhowmick from Department of Philosophy were conferred M. Phil degree from Vinayak Mission University.

Some of the members of the teaching staff have attended the Refresher Course in the different Academic Staff College. The details are given below-

18. Community Service :-

Four faculty members viz. Dr. Biman Patowary, HoD of Geography, Ms Nizara Hazarika and Ms Mridusmita Mahanta of Department of English and Mr. Sinam Iboton Singh of Department of Mathematics were invited by Sonapur Balika Vidyalaya to interact with the teachers of the neighbouring schools and to guide them in bringing changes in the teaching learning process.

A few faculty members are involved with the Arabari Rural Library for children and women. They encourage the children to borrow books to imbibe the habit of reading and creative writing. The children are encouraged to write on the wall magazine “Xopun” of the liberary. The teachers also organize competitions like Quiz, Drawing, Recitation and Extempore speech among the children and the village women.

The College organized a training Programme on Floriculture at Dikchak.

A cleanliness drive was organized by the Students Union of the College in its neighbourhood.

23. Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced and the action taken on student feedback:

The college has a mechanism for student assessment of teachers. Questionnaires and formats are designed and the same are provided to the under graduate and passed out students.

After collecting the filled up forms the Principal scans them. Thus, the strength and weakness of each faculty member are sorted out and the same is sent to the head of the respective departments. The heads discuss the findings with the other faculty of the department. The Principal also guides the teachers to overcome the problems.

The administration and the admission process of the college has been computerized since 2008-09.

The construction of the remaining two rooms of the first floor of RCC building started.

The college purchased two Almirahs for office purpose.

A good number of books have been purchased for the library.

The college bought some sports items like cricket kit, football, Martial Art kit, Volley ball and Volley ball net.

The college has done repairing and maintenance work in the existing infrastructure.

30. ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT FROM THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION:

The member of the Alumni Association regularly visit the college, especially during the important events like, College Annual Function, Fresher’s Social, New Admissions etc.

Some members also extend their help and cooperation in organising extension programme in the locality.

31. ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT FROM THE PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION:

The parent-teacher relationship has been very cordial in Sonapur College. Some departments organize parents meeting time to time, where the

teachers discuss the problems of the students with the parents and seek the feedback from the parents. These meetings help to improve the teaching-learning environment of the college.

As and when needed, the parents are invited to the college and they extend their full cooperation.

32. HEALTH SERVICES:-

Health service is provided to student as and when the need arises.

In case of any student or staff get injured in the college campus or while coming to the college, the college authority provides all kind of medical support and help.

33. PERFORMANCE IN THE SPORTS ACTIVITIES:

In the 30th State Level All Style Martial Art Championship,2009, Mr. Saurav Das of Sonapur College secured 3rd position in the 55-60 Kg weight category.

Ms. Damayanti Boro, another student of Sonapur College, represented Assam State Team in the 57th Senior National Kabaddi Championship for Man and Women held at Baliyatra Badia, Cuttak, Orissa, from 15th to 17th January ,2010

Mr. Anupam Deka of Sonapur College secured silver medal in Archery in the All India Inter SAI Regional Archery Competition held at Aurangabad, Maharashtra from 6th to 9th August, 2009.

In the 3rd National Invitation Archery Challenge Trophy Competition, organised by Assam archery Association, Mr. Keshav Das of Sonapur College, got 3rdposition, which was held from 13th to 15th August,2009.

Representing the Assam state team Ms. Damayanti Boro participated in the 35thNational Sports Festival, in the women category held at Margaon, Goa, from 11thto 14th November,2009 which was organised by Sports Authority of India (SAI).

A student of Sonapur College, Mr. Saurav Das participated in 4th National Kung-Fu and Tai-Chi Championship, 2009, held at Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh from 6th to 9th December,2009 and got Silver medal in the event Light Sauda in Category of 60Kg.

34. INCENTIVE TO OUTSTANDING SPORT PERSONS

Sonapur Tea Estate sponsors Arun Sankar Bhaduri Memorial Award to the best player and the winner of the Boy’s Marathon Race in the College Annual Sports.

Bipul Borah, Lecturer, Department of Economics, sponsors a cash award of Rs 1000/- to the winner of the Best Sports Person of Girls’ Category.

35. STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT AND AWARDS:

Ms. Dharitri Deka, Ms. Rupa Kumari Caudhury and Ranjan Gurung secured 1stClass in B.A. Final Examination, 2009 from the Department of Geography.

The proposal for sanctioning scholarship for different category of students have already been submitted by the college to the concerned authority, but the transfer of the fund is yet to be materialised.

Apart from the various state and central Govt. Scholarship the college authority also offers the following awards and prizes and in both academic and extra-curricular fields to the deserving students.

The student who secures a position and star marks in the HS Final examination is awarded with a bag of books of the subject he/she opted for the major course in our college along with a certificate.

The different departments also provide the facility of awarding the students with all the necessary books for the Degree Classes who secure letter marks in HS Final Examination

The First Class holders in the TDC Final Examination are awarded with the study materials needed to pursue his /her studies in the Post Graduate Classes.

The student scoring highest mark in HS final Examination among the successful candidate of Sonapur College is awarded with Cash Prize of Rs. 1000/- by the President of Governing body of Sonapur College.

Students scoring letter mark in Geography in HS Final Examination and First Class in TDC Final Examination is awarded with a bag of books by the Founder Secretary of Sonapur College Governing body Mr. Upen Borah.

Cash prize worth Rs. 500/- is awarded to the students who are adjudged the best project paper writer among the English Major students.

The best Social Worker of the year is awarded with a bag of books presented by Mr. R.C. Kalita, an eminent social worker of the locality.

A bag of book is awarded to the student who collects highest number of artifacts for the college museum.

36. ACTIVITIES OF THE GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING UNIT:

The Guidance and the Counselling Cell of the college has played a very active role

in providing guidance to the students as far as the higher studies are concerned.

Students have been counseled from time to time to meet their requirements of guidance.

37. PLACEMENT SERVICES PROVIDED TO STUDENTS:

Though the college does not possess a placement cell of its own and at the same time has no autonomy in that respect, still the college provides an opportunity to some of our students who have passed Master Degree with the UGC Norms to join as part time lecturers in the different departments of the college to gather experience working as lecturers.

A few also joined the college as non-teaching staff.

38. DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME FOR NON-TEACHING STAFF:

The college authority has taken the initiative for the capacity building of the non teaching staff from time to time, and invited experts of college automation or retired non-teaching staff of other college for imparting training.

Mr. Babul Garo, a Lower Division Assistant of Sonapur College participated in programme of Basic Training in computer organised by Government of Assam.

39. HEALTHY PRACTICES OF THE INSTITUTION :

The scheduled seminars and workshops are held on a regular basis. The resource persons are also invited to deliver lectures on special topics. The students also take part actively in putting questions to the resource persons. They also present papers in the seminars.

Stress is laid in acquiring knowledge about the surrounding socio-cultural heritage by arranging such competitions in the college.

The college has published three issues of each of the four wall magazines of our college. The students are provided a chance to expose their talents in creative writing s well as in making models, chart and painting.

The college arranged cleanliness drive in the college campus as well as in the market area where the students, teachers and office staff took active part.

The students were taken to field trips, excursion to make them aware of their surroundings, their obligations and duties towards society and also to imbibe in them a feeling of co-operation and brotherhood.

The college organized a field study on Environmental Awareness where the students were encouraged to gather first hand knowledge regarding environmental problems, hazards, protection, measures etc., by directly communicating with the neighborhood industries as

well as people residing in those areas. Later they submitted a field study report to the teachers.

40. LINKAGE DEVELOPED WITH NATIONAL / INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC / RESEARCH BODIES.

Four faculty members of Sonapur College, namely, Dr. Biman Patowary, Ms. Nizara Hazarika, Sinam Iboton Singh and Dipjyoti Deka joined Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) during this session.

Besides a number of students participated in National and International Seminars where some of them also presented paper. The details are given below-

41. ANY OTHER INFORMATION:

In the fond memory of the founder Principal i/c of Sonapur College, Late Dr. Dhanjit Medhi, a award is given to the best participant of the Annual College Week which is sponsored by his family. The award comprises of a trophy and a cash amount of

1000/- With an objective to encourage the students to grow up with various co-curricular

activities, Sports, Cultural and literary events are held in the Annual College Week,. Eminent personalities from the state are invited in the prize distribution ceremony to boost the morale of the students.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June to inculcate the spirit of environmental conservation.

Plantation drives by the students and teachers are organized on regular basis in the college campus as well as in the locality.

Cleanliness drive by the students in the college campus and various localities in the neighbouring area including the adopted village Dikchak is a part of the student related activities as such drives are organized on a regular basis.

Independence Day and Republic Day are celebrated in the college auspiciously every year. All the teachers and students participate in these occasions which enhance national integrity.

Mr. Prasanta Das, a student of Sonapur College participated in the Inter State Youth Rally (Cultural) Programme held at Chitradurg, Karnataka from 28th February to 1stMarch,2009.

Another student Ms. Sanghamitra Boro was selected to participate in a cultural exchange programme representing Assam troupe at Lakshadweep organised by Lakshadweep Kala Academy from 12th to 18th October, 2009.

Ms Rabita Doloi, a student of Sonapur College participated in in the ‘Vedvuasa Sangeet Nrityatsov’ organised by ‘Bhanja Kalakendra’, Rourkela, Orissa, with support from Department of Tourism, Government of Orissa and Eastern Zone Cultural Centre (EZCC), Kolkata.

Representing a State level Bihu Dance troupe Ms. Tutumoni Kalita a student of the college participated in a cultural programme organised by Ganjam District Hotel Association, Orissa, in connection with Gopalpur Beach Festival at Gopalpur, from 24th to 28th December, 2010.

Ms. Tuumoni Kalita also participated in a cultural exchange programme representing Assam troupe at Lakshadweep organised by Lakshadweep Kala Academy from 12th to 18th October, 2009.

PLAN FOR 2010-2011

TEACHING LEARNING:

1. New Techniques –

Remedial Courses – The department will formulate it’s remedial course as per the requirement of the student

Tutorial Classes – Each department will be entrusted to take up tutorial classes as per the class routine.

2. Project by Geography Department:

The Dept of Geography will take the students on an excursion to study the ‘Man- Environment Relation in Mountainous Region’. Later a report will be prepared.

3. Model and Chart Preparation:

The Dept. of Geography will make their students prepare model and chart on “Impact of Big Dam on Physical and Social Environment”.

The Dept of Geography will carry out a project on Topography Mapping of the college campus.

Departmental seminars will be conducted by the departments as per the schedule mentioned in the prospectus cum Academic calendar.

6. Book Fair

Book Fair will be organised in the college campus on a convenient day to inculcate reading habit among students.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

The college will take initiative to find out socio-economic problems of the village folks

To organize a training programme for the woman of the village of Dikchak.

To organize a cleanliness drive in the neighbourhood and in Dikchak village.

To organize extension programme in the neighbouring feeder schools to raise the standard of the input that will further help in lowering the rate of drop out in the college
