Keynote Address by Lord Digby Jones, former Director General of the CBI

“Growing the UK Economy... ..what’ll stop us?”The only way out of our economic malaise is to trade our way out. Everyone is certain that we must grow our economy to succeed. So what is going to prevent this happening on a sustainable basis, especially in a globalised market place where India wants your lunch and China wants your dinner? Lord Digby Jones will explore some of these issues, from our education system not being fit for purpose to unintelligent Government procurement, from suffocating, systemic, regulatory risk-aversion to an anti-business societal mood music that celebrates entrepreneurship in individual personality and suspects and decries it in its success. He will also provide examples of staggering global success in innovation and value-added manufacturing and service provision. Can we succeed? Without doubt he says, if...!

Supported Charity

Founded in 1862, Birmingham Children’s Hospital treats around 250,000 children each year, serving a growing West Midlands population of 5.3 million, of which 1.4 million are under 18. The hospital is the only children’s hospital in the UK to offer both an Emergency Department and the full range of specialist clinical services. Many patients also come from further afield because we are a nationally designated centre for cardiac surgery; surgery of the face and skull; the skin blistering condition epodermolysis bullosa; eye cancer; inherited metabolic disorders; and liver and small bowel transplants. We also have a world-renowned Intensive Care Unit, Paediatric Clinical Research Facility and Burns Unit.

We rely on donations to provide art and play facilities for children and teens, improve the care environment for patients and their families, repair and restore our largely Victorian buildings, purchase leading-edge medical equipment and fund research and development.

Our corporate partners play a key role in this by donating money, volunteering their employees’ time, and organising fundraising events. Some choose to do this as a corporate initiative, others prefer simply to encourage and allow their employees to ‘do their own thing’ for us.

Presentation Summaries

Innovations on tracking technology Richard Taylor, Managing Director, Automatrics LimitedThomas Kvifte, International Sales Director, Abax AS (Norway)

With over 80 providers in the UK, many offering differing services, plus ever changing technologies and terminology, it is no wonder that companies can be confused when tasked with sourcing the correct tracking systems for their vehicles and equipment. Having spent the last five years addressing some of these issues within the construction and plant industry, Richard will explain the latest tracking technologies, describe application choice and identify where companies can seek independent advice in publications, certification from quality assessors, and approved industry association listings. Automatrics’ successful mtrack brand has been further developed with partners Abax AS (Scandinavia’s largest tracking supplier). Thomas will explain how 20,000 tracking units installed last year have helped to revolutionise business and private mileage vehicle trips management, utilising a simple to use application for PC, mobile, iPad and iPhone.

Innovations in health & safetyKevin Haycock, Environmental, Health and Safety Project Manager, A-Plant

Health and safety is of paramount importance to A-Plant and the company takes every step possible to minimise or remove risk to personnel at all times. A-Plant has a proud history of introducing health and safety innovations not just to the company itself but that have since been recognised and instilled throughout the industry. As an Environmental, Health

& Safety Project Manager, Kevin is responsible for working with manufacturers, customers and A-Plant personnel to develop products and ways of working that will add countless benefits to everyone. Kevin will give an overview of some of the innovations introduced at A-Plant, such as ‘self rescue fall arresters’ (a first in the hire industry), various health and safety policies introduced and some of the innovative policies A-Plant is currently developing.

Managing people plant interfacesIain Wilson, Director Safety, Sustainability, Risk and Assurance, Balfour Beatty Major Civil Engineering

In pursuing the goal of Zero Harm, Balfour Beatty has recognised the significance of high potential incidents involving the interfaces between people and plant. Accident data indicates that for the first time last year plant incidents surpassed falls from height for fatalities. Iain will explain the coordinated approach taken within Balfour Beatty to address this issue, including the cross discipline working group set up to consider incidents experienced, share lessons learned and drive through actions to address the problem. Clearly there is no easy fix, and this presentation sets out to explain the approach adopted, and some of the new equipment and systems that have been trialled on site. The working group works with a variety of external organisations to ensure buy-in across the business and is now working with other contracting and client organisations to improve standards across the wider industry.

Revolutionising step to working at heights Lauren France, Marketing Director, APT Construction Services Ltd

In one of its first official launches, Lauren will be introducing APT’s solution to low level access problems that enables conformity to the latest working at height regulations. Stormer is a complete work station system which

addresses increasing industry demands for working safely, efficiently and effectively at all times. Lauren has been working relentlessly to bring a fresh approach to construction equipment and the presentation will focus on higher productivity through a revolutionary approach which forms a brand new category of access equipment. With nearly 20 years’ experience in the construction industry APT provide solutions to industry problems and this product is the first in a whole line of new revolutionary equipment. Set to take the access industry by storm… a presentation not to be missed.

Condition monitoringRobert Doble, Product Manager, Finning UK & IrelandLucy Couturier, Services Development Manager, Finning UK & Ireland

With condition monitoring, the more information that can be collected and processed, the better. In his presentation Robert will outline how Finning can provide the tools and advice to help you put condition monitoring elements to work in your service and maintenance routines. He will also explain how Finning can supply analysis services and recommendations that will help to make the most of the data gathered from your equipment. Making use of fluid analysis, machine inspections, electronic equipment information, equipment history and site conditions, Finning’s team of expert condition monitoring advisors is on hand to back equipment up from a central location, keeping downtime to a minimum and saving essential money for businesses.

Hand protection – what makes us different?Michael Easton, Sales and Marketing Director, Globus (Shetland) Ltd

In his presentation Michael will analyse the importance of correct hand protection and the wider impact on company performance, environmental issues and the ‘feel good’ factor for workers. Looking at varying influencing factors and the balance required between legality and productivity, Michael will provide some surprising insights to the complex world of worker protection. With almost two decades’ experience of building solutions that match company obligations, budgets and worker aspirations, Michael is uniquely positioned to provide an outline of the factors currently helping to make Globus a leader in the field of worker protection and recent winners of a prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneurial Innovation Award.

HAVi – simple, effective and affordableAndrew Mee, Technical Director, The HAVi

Hand arm vibration (HAV) has been a complex and difficult issue to address, but progress over the last few years has been immense, with the introduction of lower vibration equipment, job rotation and training of operatives all raising general awareness. The publication of in-use vibration data by manufacturers and hire companies has also helped build an understanding of the HAV issues within industry. The solution has been greatly assisted by the introduction of the HAVi, which displays HSE points, actual trigger time exposure and the vibration magnitude of the equipment being used. Andrew will explain how the HAVi, together with the HAVi Manager, will ensure safer working and better controls when using vibrating equipment. The HAVi Manager offers a simple and effective low cost means to HAV compliance, ensuring that precious resources can be more effectively directed towards hiring and buying low vibration equipment, good quality consumables and health surveillance, all of which should form part of a corporate HAV policy.

An update from HSEPeter Lennon, Team Leader - Workplace Environment Team B, Work Environment, Radiation and Gas Division, HSE

Pete has worked in the HSE since 1991 and currently leads the HSE team responsible for developing and delivering policy and interventions on three topics: workplace transport (including work-related road risk), work-related violence and musculoskeletal disorders. Pete will give an overview of developments in HSE since the last PEMIC conference, focusing on a few key topics of interest, namely noise and vibration; slips, trips and falls; and workplace transport, including the importance of training (especially for fork-lift truck operators), load safety and work-related road risk. In addition, Pete will cover more general issues such as HSE’s longer term strategy for working with and through others to improve health and safety in the workplace.

JCB’s responsible approach to innovationTim Burnhope, Group Managing Director, Product Development and Commercial Operations

In his presentation Tim will describe how responsibility is at the heart of JCB’s approach to innovation and outline how the company’s focus on efficient design is delivering more sustainable products. He will also explain how product development at JCB is contributing to improved on-site safety and better fleet security.

Fuel for thoughtKevin Taylor, Managing Director, Liquid Management Solutions Ltd

Kevin will explore and deal with some of the concerning fuel vs. engine specification issues facing operators of sophisticated modern mobile plant. With the political and legal debates wrangling across the US and the EU, delegates

will be provided with a clear overview of the dividing performance lines, and how they may affect their mobile plant assets. With the widespread emergence of biofuels now being used within the manufacture of gas oil, Kevin will also consider whether the potential carbon emission savings are producing other costs within the operation. Operators will be provided with an insight into what ‘best practice’ methodology should be implemented within their fuel supply and storage facilities.

Workplace transport – risk managementSteve Baldwin, Technical Manager, Mentor Training

Based on his extensive experience of work transport and health and safety, Steve will be exploring and explaining an approach that he has found works in making more effective use of all types of workplace transport (fork lifts, cranes, plant, access platforms etc.) and at the same type making them safer. He will also discuss the question ‘It’s all very well training operators how to do things properly but what about the people that supervise and manage them?’ This presentation will provide food for thought and hopefully some ideas on some simple steps that will produce big results.

The most innovative and trusted bolt securing technologyPeter Higgins, Technical Sales Engineer, Nord-Lock Group

The Nord-Lock Group is the world leader in bolt securing systems. The company has a unique combination of expertise in bolted joints and a market leading product range, including wedge-locking products and Superbolt. During his presentation Peter will be looking at why bolted joints come loose, how and why the Nord-Lock product range can prevent this loosening from occurring and some of the applications where Nord-Lock has helped customers achieve the security that they need. Nord-Lock is proud to share its experience, knowledge and creativity in helping customers achieve outstanding results - if you have problems with bolted joints coming loose then Nord-Lock believes it can provide the solution.

Making safety personalJohn Riehl, Owner of MyZone

John’s presentation will look at the MyZone Worker Alert System and how it addresses the management of one of the biggest safety issues in the construction industry - interface between people and heavy plant. He will explain how this unique technology alerts the worker of an approaching hazard, via a receiver attached to their hard hat, allowing them to take evasive action before possible injury. MyZone-enabled sites allow workers to take control of their own personal exclusion areas, removing the dependency on how others operate potential hazards. MyZone is solely designed with personal protection in mind.

The hidden safety riskMartin Knott, Managing Director / Business & Customer Excellence, Speedy

The hidden safety risk will be an intriguing presentation by one of the most prominent members of the plant and equipment community. Martin’s talk is specifically designed to be deliberately thought provoking and to widen debate on a ‘major killer’ within the industry - an issue relevant to us all. Members of the audience will be far better informed about the major issues at the end of this presentation.

The Track Lock SystemMr Dave Creswell, Area Hire Manager, WHC Hire Services

Over the last 6 years WHC Hire Services has developed and patented a safe way to transport 1.5 tonne and 3 tonne mini excavators on trailers without the aid of straps. In his presentation Dave will explain how the system works. Once an excavator has been loaded (blade facing forwards) and correctly positioned by the use of guide bars fixed to the trailer bed, the Track Lock System bars are placed across the tracks and clipped into place using a lynch pin. The tracks cannot move and the excavator is totally locked down, positioned correctly and balanced on the trailer to allow for safe transportation. This system can be altered to fit any make of mini excavator and WHC use it on all their own fleet of 1.5 / 3 tonne mini diggers. It has already proven itself out in the field when an excavator remained secure on its trailer when involved in a road accident.
