Youth Mission Trip 2015

Seven youth and two adults from Holy Emmanuel set out for a mission 900 miles in the making. The destination? Ft. Collins, Colorado. At the wee hour of 5am on July 11th these individuals arrived groggy to pack up the 15-passenger van and head out. The departure did not lack excitement as, to their surprise, a large gathering of support from energetic folk from the congregation were present too. Heavy-eye shifted to wide eyes with a sendoff that left the crew in high spirits all week long.

The first trek was rather quiet until arrival at the infamous Wall Drug, SD. With dinosaurs, free water, a good leg stretch and some tourist shopping they were back on the road. The first overnight was in five star accommodations on the floors of Zion Lutheran Church & Preschool in Rapid City, SD. After checking in the group made a stop to Mt. Rushmore before turning in.

The next day was a shorter drive filled with Mad Libs, the headband game, and music jam sessions. The crew checked in to their week base camp at the floors of the unairconditioned facility at First Christian Church, Aurora, Colorado. With just three showers shared among 86 people the girls counted their blessings as they were housed in the church nursery which had its very own sink, something no other group had access too. A makeshift salon was set up as the girls were “living it large” with clean hair that made the crew look clean at least from the neck up. The rest, was remedied with baby wipes and extra deodorant.

A dry climate, higher elevation and daily temperatures reaching 110°F also brought challenges as the group had their share of dry throats and nosebleeds, but it was nothing that cough drops and tissues couldn’t fix. These students were real troopers with servant hearts despite minor setbacks.

Holy Emmanuel was split into two smaller crews that were sent to two different locations. One crew comprised of Laura Schluck, Robert Melde III, Kevin Anderson, & Katie Seyer were sent to work at a low income housing facility doing maintenance projects. Weeding, painting and cleaning were their main tasks. The other crew with Kristi Bauer, Bryanna Hanson, Kana Anderson, Taylor Walter, and Jessie Lagoo had split days with mornings at Arc of Larimer County where they assisted with office work and distributed flyers promoting ADA compliant bus stops. In the afternoons the group was at a local organic farm called Revive Gardens. They pulled weeds, picked peas, and planted new crop.

Each day following morning worship the crews would leave base camp at 8:30am to their respective locations and work until 3pm. When not serving the community, Holy Emmanuel along with youth groups from Texas, and Colorado had large group games including a personal favorite known as “kill ball”, old fashioned card games as well as time for large group worship and food.

The evenings were a time to unpack all that had happened as Holy Emmanuel had individual devotions and Bible Study. This was a time to debrief and share God sightings, highs and lows for the day. From this intimate time memories were shared and re-lived and the group became more closely bonded and Christ more radiant.

After a week of spiritual growth and being Christ’s hands and feet Holy Emmanuel ended their week with a white water rafting trip on the Cache La Poudre river. This was an action packed adventure that required a great deal of teamwork that only solidified the bond that this group of young people already had.

The mission trip was a wonderful spiritual experience with growth beyond what can simply happen one day a week at Sunday School. These students grew in so many ways with self-confidence, work experience and understanding to what it means to truly be a servant of Christ. The immersion of this Christ Centered week through the power of the Holy Spirit definitely moved in the hearts of our youth. It would not be possible without all of the prayerful and monetary support of the Holy Emmanuel Congregation. What you have given is more than a week long mission trip, but a foundation rooted in Christ to guide beyond time.

Join us Sunday August 9th for a presentation by the youth of Holy Emmanuel as they share their personal experience.

Holy Emmanuel Youth Mission Trip 2015 - Ft. Collins Colorado

Meet Wendy Ewald, Director of Open Arms CECC

Wendy graduated from Concordia University, St. Paul in 1979 with a Lutheran Educators Degree and a B.A. In Elementary Education. She took her first call to St. John Lutheran in Berlin, WI, where she met and married her husband,

Richard, of 34 years. In 1989, she was Called to Golden Valley Lutheran to start and direct their early childhood program. Following the success of that program she was Called to Bethlehem Lutheran in St. Paul to start their preschool and school age child care program. Next, was a Call to Mt. Calvary Lutheran in Richfield where she taught 1st and 2nd grade. When Mt. Calvary

closed in 2009, she was Called to start and direct the preschool at King of Kings in Roseville, MN. Now God has led her to Holy Emmanuel Lutheran church and Open Arms Christian Early Childhood Center.

Richard and Wendy live in Bloomington, and have two daughters, two sons-in-law, one son, one granddaughter, two dogs and a rabbit! When not working she enjoys reading, walking, gardening, and babysitting her granddaughter Harper. She is excited to begin working with the talented staff of Open Arms Christian Early Childhood Center, and looks forward to becoming part of the Holy Emmanuel community.

Busyness is the new black. It’s stylish. We spend an inordinate amount of time comparing how busy we are with everyone else. We compare our schedules, our kid’s schedules, how productive we are and how much we have because of it to everyone around us. And if we don’t do or have what the next guy does or has, we just get busier and produce more so that we can.

This consumes our conversations and thoughts. And this should give us pause: Who is consuming whom, here? Are we the consumer or are we those consumed? It’s no accident that our adversary the

devil is described as a lion prowling around seeking to devour us, to consume us. He gives us the liturgy of this world, the liturgy of productivity and consumption. For if he can keep us busy in “muchness” and “manyness,” he can be satisfied.

And this is why the Lord, after finishing all His work of creation, rested on the seventh day. This is why He established the Sabbath day—to give His people rest from all their work. As they rested, He continued to work for them, to satisfy them, to fill them with His gifts—food from heaven by His Word and Promise.

That day came when from our Lord’s cross and in His death, He proclaimed, “It is finished” (John 16:30). And so His work of redemption was complete. And so His body rested in the tomb, the belly of the earth. Though He is the Lord God who always works, yet as the Lord rested on the original Sabbath, now Jesus kept the Sabbath by resting in the tomb and rising from the dead to live forever. For this is why He came. This is why He became man: to draw all to Himself so that He could give rest and refreshment to the weary and the heavy laden.

The Sabbath is a gift, not a burden. It is a gift of time free from the liturgy of this world, the liturgy of productivity and consumption. Sabbath is time for rest and refreshment, a time free from anxiety to enjoy the gifts God gives, all of them—His Word, His Promises, His Sacraments, His creation, everything. It is a foretaste of the rest we shall enjoy in heaven.

Sadly for many of us rest has become work. It’s become drudgery. We long for it but we aren’t able to do it because there’s so much to be done and so little time to do it. But really what’s the rush? Why are we so hurried and harried? Have we forgotten that Jesus is raised from the dead and lives forever?

Sabbath is God’s gift of time free from all of the anxiety and hurry of this world so that we can rest, be refreshed by the gifts God gives. Society won’t do it for us. They are addicted to the liturgy of productivity and consumption. Though we are in the world, we are not of it. We are the people of God, His own children by water and Word, joined to the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus lives. And so shall we. So rest in the promise of our Savior that sin, death, and time have not hold on you because Jesus is raised from the dead. Jesus lives. And so shall we, forever.
