During this time we will use some of the various forms of prayer

in our Prayer Book.

Today we use the First Order of Morning Prayer (APBA page 2) which is

based on the old form of Morning Prayer from the

Book of Common Prayer (1662).

¶ The service begins with a time of reflective music.

¶ The Sentence.

You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour

and power, for you created all things, and by your will they

existed and were created. Revelation 4.11

¶ A hymn is sung. Amazing Grace.

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found

Was blind, but now I see.

As Grace first taught my heart to fear,

So Grace my fears relieved.

How precious did that Grace appear

The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils, and snares

I have already come.

God’s Grace has brought me safe thus far

And Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.

His Word my hope secures.

He will my shield and portion be

As long as life endures. John Newton. 1725-1807 alt.

¶ The minister reads these sentences of Scripture.

Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful,

slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. Joel 2.13

The Kingdom of God is at hand: repent, and believe in the

gospel.

Mark 1.15

¶ The minister continues

Dear friends, the Scriptures urge us to acknowledge our sins,

and not to conceal them from God our heavenly Father, but to

confess them with a penitent and obedient heart, so that we may

be forgiven through his infinite goodness and mercy.

We ought always to admit our sins before God, and especially

when we come together to give thanks for the good things we

have received at his hands, to offer the praise that is his due, to

hear his holy word, and to ask what is necessary for the body as

well as the soul.

Therefore, let us draw near to the throne of our gracious God, as

we pray:

¶ A general Confession.

Almighty and most merciful Father,

we have strayed from your ways like lost sheep,

we have followed too much

the devices and desires of our own hearts,

we have offended against your holy laws.

We have left undone what we ought to have done,

and we have done what we ought not to have done.

Yet, good Lord, have mercy on us;

restore those who are penitent,

according to your promises declared

in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Page 4: The Anglican Parish of St Luke Toowoomba€¦ · God’s Grace has brought me safe thus far And Grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me. His Word my hope secures

4

Grant, most merciful Father, for his sake,

that we may live godly, righteous and sober lives

to the glory of your holy name.

Amen.

¶ The priest pronounces the Absolution.

The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has no pleasure in

the death of sinners, but would rather they should turn from

their wickedness and live.

He has given authority to his ministers to declare to his people

who repent the forgiveness of sins.

God pardons all who truly repent and believe his holy gospel.

And so we ask him to grant us true repentance, and his holy

Spirit, that what we do now may please him, and that the rest of

our lives may be pure and holy; so that at the last we may come

to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

¶ Open our lips, O Lord;

and we shall declare your praise.

O God, make speed to save us.

O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:

as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

Let us praise the Lord.

The Lord’s name be praised.

¶ Psalm 95 (Venite)

O come, let us sing out to the Lord:

let us shout in triumph to the rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his face with thanksgiving:

and cry out to him joyfully in psalms.

For the Lord is a great God:

and a great king above all gods.

5

In his hand are the depths of the earth:

and the peaks of the mountains are his also.

The sea is his and he made it:

his hands moulded dry land.

Come, let us worship and bow down:

and kneel before the Lord our maker.

For he is the Lord our God:

we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Today if only you would hear his voice:

‘Do not harden your hearts as Israel did in the

wilderness;

‘When your forebears tested me:

put me to proof though they had seen my works.

‘Forty years long I loathed that generation and said:

“It is a people who err in their hearts,

for they do not know my ways”;

‘Of whom I swore in my wrath:

“They shall not enter my rest.”’

Glory to God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

¶ Psalm 131

1 O Lord, my heart is not proud:

nor are my eyes haughty.

2 I do not busy myself in great matters:

or in things too wonderful for me.

3 But I have calmed and quieted my soul

like a weaned child upon its mother’s breast:

like a child on its mother’s breast is my soul within me.

4 O Israel, trust in the Lord:

from this time forward and for ever.

Notes on Psalm 131:

¶ A Reading, from the Old Testament, Exodus 6:2-13

2 God also spoke to Moses and said to him: ‘I am the Lord . 3 I

appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but by

my name “The Lord ” I did not make myself known to them. 4 I

also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of

Canaan, the land in which they resided as aliens. 5 I have also

Trust is an important quality and practice of living to absorb into our

approach to life. Of course, trust can be so easily destroyed or damaged

when we have relied on the truth of someone’s words or depended on

their action and we have been disappointed. At this time there may seem

to be many reasons not to be trusting. Many people feel let down by

governments and systems which they had relied upon to keep us safe, to

respond to threats clearly, fairly and decisively. There have been some

issues in the responses made by our government and other governments

around the world, but now is not the time to be throwing blame. It is a

time for taking responsibility. The same applies where there may have

been a breach of trust in personal relationships. Living in this moment,

creatively, invites us to step beyond retribution and resentment.

In this short psalm the writer is encouraging us to find that inner peace

through which we will be sustained. The first verses may be read as if

they were an invitation to opt out of taking any responsibility or feeling

any connection to events in the world around us. Instead they can be

read as an encouragement to let go of the pride which leads us to hold

fixed positions, pride which may lead us to take too little responsibility.

Find peace, within, in relationship with God. And that peace will

sustain us through this time. Paul Mitchell

heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are

holding as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. 6 Say

therefore to the Israelites, “I am the Lord , and I will free you

from the burdens of the Egyptians and deliver you from slavery

to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with

mighty acts of judgement. 7 I will take you as my people, and I

will be your God. You shall know that I am the Lord your God,

who has freed you from the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will

bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac,

and Jacob; I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord .” ’ 9 Moses told this to the Israelites; but they would not listen to

Moses, because of their broken spirit and their cruel slavery. 10 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, 11 ‘Go and tell Pharaoh king of

Egypt to let the Israelites go out of his land.’ 12 But Moses spoke to

the Lord , ‘The Israelites have not listened to me; how then shall

Pharaoh listen to me, poor speaker that I am?’ 13 Thus the Lord

spoke to Moses and Aaron, and gave them orders regarding the

Israelites and Pharaoh king of Egypt, charging them to free the

Israelites from the land of Egypt.

After the reading, the reader says ‘Here ends the second reading’.

Notes on Exodus 6:2-13:

When Moses encountered God speaking through the ‘burning bush’ (see

Exodus 3) it was an astonishing encounter. Moses was given an

extraordinary insight into the next level of encounter between God and

humanity. The early chapters of the book of Exodus suggest that before

this encounter the people had a very arms-length connection to God.

They had simply used ‘El’, the word for ‘god’ in the language of that

region (a word related to ‘Allah’ in Arabic) when speaking about or to

‘god’. In the encounter at the bush Moses knew that to take the

relationship deeper a name was needed. God’s answer was simply “I am

who I am.” This “I am” became the name for God ‘Yahweh’. It wasn’t

¶ The Song of the Church (Te Deum)

We praise you, O God:

we acclaim you as the Lord.

All creation worships you:

the Father everlasting.

To you all angels, all the powers of heaven:

the cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might:

heaven and earth are full of your glory.

The glorious company of apostles praise you:

The noble fellowship of prophets praise you.

The white-robed army of martyrs praise you:

Throughout the world, the holy Church acclaims you:

Father, of majesty unbounded:

really a misunderstanding. At the heart of the name, the way in which

the people of God were then able to address and speak about God, was

the understanding that they were connected to one who IS. At the heart

of reality, beyond attributes of power or anthropomorphic projections or

descriptions based on any geographical location, at the heart of life and

existence … God IS. The promise of the land in which to live does not

mean that God was located in that land. It was a promise which showed

the deep care of God that people would have a home. In the challenge to

the power being wielded by Pharaoh Moses was not engaged in a contest

or competition ‘my god is better than your god’. This was simply a call

for Pharaoh, and the people who God was setting out to save and help, to

recognise a deeply disturbing truth. We cannot box or control or limit

the most basic and essential expression of existence. We can only give

our lives in obedient response. Do not fight the one who IS. As we learn

later, at this heart of existence is compassion and a desire for

completeness, fulfilment. God IS, Moses shared. And later John took

that deeper still. God is love (1 John 5). Paul Mitchell

your true and only Son, worthy of all praise,

and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide.

You, Lord Christ, are the King of glory:

the eternal Son of the Father.

When you took our flesh to set us free:

you humbly chose the Virgin’s womb.

You overcame the sting of death:

and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

You are seated at God’s right hand in glory:

We believe that you will come to be our judge.

Come then, Lord, and help your people,

bought with the price of your own blood:

and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting.

¶ A Reading, from the New Testament, Matthew 27:32-56

32 As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene named

Simon; they compelled this man to carry his cross. 33 And when

they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a

Skull), 34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but

when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had

crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by

casting lots; 36 then they sat down there and kept watch over him. 37 Over his head they put the charge against him, which read,

‘This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.’ 38 Then two bandits were

crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those

who passed by derided him, shaking their heads 40 and saying,

‘You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days,

save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the

cross.’ 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the

scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, 42 ‘He saved others;

he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come

down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts

in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to; for he said,

Page 10: The Anglican Parish of St Luke Toowoomba€¦ · God’s Grace has brought me safe thus far And Grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me. His Word my hope secures

10

“I am God’s Son.” ’ 44 The bandits who were crucified with him

also taunted him in the same way. 45 From noon on, darkness

came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 46 And

about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, ‘Eli, Eli, lema

sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken

me?’ 47 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, ‘This

man is calling for Elijah.’ 48 At once one of them ran and got a

sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to

him to drink. 49 But the others said, ‘Wait, let us see whether

Elijah will come to save him.’ 50 Then Jesus cried again with a

loud voice and breathed his last. 51 At that moment the curtain of

the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook,

and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened, and

many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 After his resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered

the holy city and appeared to many. 54 Now when the centurion

and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the

earthquake and what took place, they were terrified and said,

‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’ 55 Many women were also there,

looking on from a distance; they had followed Jesus from Galilee

and had provided for him. 56 Among them were Mary

Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the

mother of the sons of Zebedee.

After the reading, the reader says ‘Here ends the second reading’.

Notes on Matthew 27:32-56:

This reading will be revisited on Good Friday. This year we are sharing

Matthew’s account of the life and journey of Jesus. On this Fifth

Sunday in Lent we are already looking forward towards the events of the

coming weeks. Lent itself is a journey leading us to the Cross. Yet not

only there. If the story ended with the passage which we read here then

the church would not exist, hope would not exist, peace and fulfilment

¶ The Sermon. A short time of silent reflection follows during which

some music is played

¶ The Song of Zechariah (Benedictus)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel:

who has come to his people and set them free.

The Lord has raised up for us a mighty Saviour:

born of the house of his servant David.

Through the holy prophets, God promised of old:

to save us from our enemies, from the hands of

all who hate us,

To show mercy to our forebears:

and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:

to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear:

would be elusive. Experiencing pain, observing and sharing that pain in

the lives of others, being confronted with mortality and grief … these

things deeply disturb us. They move us into a place where we can so

easily be or feel overwhelmed. Notice a key aspect of this account of the

death of Jesus. He was not alone. Not only were others present but they

were engaged, involved. Simon of Cyrene was invited to help. The

soldiers, blunted by the brutality of the violence of their lives, joked and

mocked and added layers to their attempts to shut out any real

connection between the horrific events and their hearts – yet they were

there and the last words of the Centurion are the sign of a crack opening

in that protective armour, a glimpse of realisation and humanity

breaking through. And those closest to Jesus were there, moved with

compassion and grief.

As we are invited to accompany journeys of pain and grief we are

invited to be present, with the depth of ourselves, to those who are before

us. Grief, truly encountered, is never just ‘observed’. It touches and

Page 12: The Anglican Parish of St Luke Toowoomba€¦ · God’s Grace has brought me safe thus far And Grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me. His Word my hope secures

12

holy and righteous before him, all the days of our life.

And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the

Most High:

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation:

by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God:

the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and

the shadow of death:

and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to God; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:

as in the beginning, so now, and for ever. Amen.

¶ The Apostles’ Creed.

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose from the dead;

he ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father;

from there he will come to judge

the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

¶ The Prayers

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray.

Lord, have mercy on us.

Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us.

Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours

now and for ever. Amen.

Lord, show us your mercy,

and grant us your salvation.

Keep our nation under your care,

and guide us in justice and truth.

Clothe your ministers with righteousness,

and make your chosen people joyful.

Lord, save your people,

and bless your inheritance.

Give peace in our time, O Lord,

for you are our help and strength.

Create in us clean hearts, O God,

and renew us by your Holy Spirit.

¶ The Collect for the Fifth Sunday in Lent

Life-giving God,

your Son came into the world

to free us all from sin and death:

breathe upon us with the power of your Spirit,

that we may be raised to new life in Christ,

and serve you in holiness and righteousness all our days;

through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

¶ The Collect for Peace

O God, the author and lover of peace, in knowledge of whom

stands our eternal life, whose service is perfect freedom; defend

your servants in all assaults of our enemies, that, surely trusting

in your defence, we may not fear the power of any adversaries,

through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

¶ Morning Collect

Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, we

thank you for bringing us safely to this day: keep us by your

mighty power, and grant that we fall into no sin, neither run

into any kind of danger; but lead and govern us in all things,

that we may always do what is righteous in your sight; through

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

¶ A hymn is sung. King of Glory, King of peace.

King of glory, King of peace,

I will love thee;

and, that love may never cease,

Page 15: The Anglican Parish of St Luke Toowoomba€¦ · God’s Grace has brought me safe thus far And Grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me. His Word my hope secures

15

I will move thee.

Thou hast granted my request,

thou hast heard me;

thou didst note my working breast,

thou hast spared me.

Wherefore with my utmost art

I will sing thee,

and the cream of all my heart

I will bring thee.

Though my sins against me cried,

thou didst clear me;

and alone, when they replied,

thou didst hear me.

Seven whole days, not one in seven,

I will praise thee;

in my heart, though not in heaven,

I can raise thee.

Small it is, in this poor sort

to enrol thee:

ev'n eternity's too short

to extol thee.

George Herbert 1593-1633

A concluding prayer from the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom

Lord, you have given us grace to agree in these our prayers, and

you have promised that when two or three ask together in your

name you will grant their requests. Fulfil now, Lord, our desires

and prayers as may be best for us. Grant us, in this life,

knowledge of your truth and in the age to come, life eternal.

Amen.

A general thanksgiving

Almighty God and merciful Father,

we give you hearty thanks

for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us

and to all people.

We bless you for our creation and preservation,

and all the blessings of this life;

but above all, for your immeasurable love

in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ,

for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.

And, we pray, give us such a sense of all your mercies,

that our hearts may be truly thankful

and that we may praise you

not only with our lips, but in our lives,

serving you in holiness and righteousness all our days,

through Jesus Christ, our Lord,

to whom with you and the Holy Spirit,

be honour and glory, now and for ever.

Amen.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,

be with us all evermore. Amen.

Sharing Good News.

Sharing Good News Tip # 26

Each Lent in recent years we have heard from members of our church community who have shared their journeys of faith. Each story has been different and yet they have also each been opportunities to celebrate the wonderful ways in which God continues to touch our lives. What about you? Are you ready to share your story? Get copies of the stories already shared from the Parish Office. Read (and as you do pray for those who shared their lives with us in this way!). Make a start in your ‘Good News Journal’. Your map will help. You will see that you are already well on the way to being able to share your faith and your experience of God with others! You may have done this already in recent years. As you reflect on your story as it was shared what might you add or change? What are the signs you can see of how God has been in your life since that time? Read and reflect on 1 Peter 3:15.

“Holy Spirit, encourager and guide, touch my heart and let me feel the love with

which I am embraced. Then help me to put that love into words so that I can share my life with those who are around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Thought for the Week from Mothers union Australia Sunday 29 March 2020

Heart for justice When our hearts yearn for justice, it is not with the sense of wanting retribution or revenge. Justice is what God delivers. Being Just is an attribute of God as is Righteousness and Mercy. A heart that aches for justice will yearn and work for others to have wrongs righted, mercy delivered. The yearning for justice is not for oneself. We do want to be right with God, we do want God to have mercy on us, but our prayer is always for the down-trodden other. Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. Isaiah 30:18 Members in Nigeria were among others in Zone E who wanted to focus their support on the vulnerable and marginalised and those in poverty. With a heart for justice they felt advocacy, education and connecting people to government provisions would help to combat the injustices of disadvantage. As we move into Holy Week may our hearts be open and discerning and may God bless us all.

Pray Daily

• Season of Prayer and Repentance Today, the fifth Sunday in Lent, is the focus of the Primates’ Task Group’s call for a period of prayer and repentance in the Anglican Communion. The Bishop of West Malaysia, Moon Hing, is a member of the Task Group and has written this prayer, which the Task Group offers to the Anglican Communion for use today. Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Sovereign Lord of the universe, Creator of humankind, we, your unfaithful children, are truly sorry for our sins and the lives that we have lived. We sincerely believe and confess in our hearts that only through the precious blood of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross at Calvary, can we obtain Your forgiveness. We repent that: In thought, word or deed, we have committed serious offences against You and our neighbours; In laziness, despair and lust for power, we have provoked hatred, division and hurt within our communities; In greed, deceit and indifference, we have caused serious damage, unnecessary conflict and aggravated destruction to our refugee and migrant brothers and sisters; In selfishness, insensitivity and bias, we have encouraged and emboldened those who inflict hurt, pain and sorrow on our loved ones and families; In the name of religion, doctrine and even of Christ himself, we have wounded believers and pursuers of holiness and faith; In stubbornness, pride and arrogance, we have caused division and strife within Your church and among Your children; Mercifully send Your Holy Spirit – the Spirit of order and comfort – and cleanse us from all unrighteousness; restore in us true faith in Christ which brings truth, peace and harmony; and help us to walk together with our brothers and sisters in the peace of our Lord Jesus Christ to the glory of Your name. Amen.
