Virginia United Methodist Assembly Center/ Blackstone Conference and Retreat CenterVUMAC or BCRC is our conference Retreat Center. It has been serving the Virginia conference for sixty years. Our executive director is Mr. Sam McCracken and he is doing a wonderful job of restoring the Assembly Center to its original beauty and usefulness. We have just hired a Development Person, Debbie Baugham, and she will begin work on May 11. Debbie will be contacting many in our conference to increase the usage of the facility and to ask for help in raising the funds needed to restore the building.

VUMAC received a bequest of $100,000 in 2014 from the Estate of H.S. Abernathy, a former UMM President and long-time member of Community UMC in Virginia Beach. VUMAC installed a Bio-Mass Furnace that heats the whole building, all the hot water and the swimming pool from wood chips. This addition has cut the use of oil and saves VUMAC about $8000 a month. The whole first floor has been refurbished and looks beautiful. We have plans to refurbish the second and third floors and these kinds of things happen because of gifts like H.S. Abernathy and many others who help and have helped but we need your help to continue this.

Good things are happening at Blackstone but we cannot expect bequests to come each year so we must reach out to faithful “Partners” and new “Partners” who will help us thrive so that VUMAC can continue to be a place of spiritual growth and leadership development for the clergy and laity of our Virginia Annual Conference. Five Districts made commitments to VUMAC last year and we hope all 16 will help this year as we make our 2016 Budgets. Last year Charlottesville, Elizabeth River, James River, Lynchburg and Staunton made commitments. Danny Kesner and Tommy Herndon serve on this Board and we hope you will consider helping VUMAC. VUMAC gets no Conference Funding.

VUMAC is our Conference Retreat Center and welcomed more than 13,000 guests last year. Please consider helping VUMAC. If you would like more information or a program about VUMAC, please contact Sam McCracken or Debbie Baugham at 1-434-292-5308.See page 7 of this newsletter for donation information.

She wants to be a doctor and help people. It will cost $40,000 total for all her years of university to be a doctor. Please forward to anyone you know who might help. Dear Friends in the Family of United Methodists in the Virginia Conference!Did you know that 1 in 6 people in our Commonwealth are at risk for the issues of hunger? Children, especially the younger ones, are those who are most affected, and the developmental results of malnutrition can be startling.

For the last 6 years, twice in each of the three cities in which we United Methodists have gathered, you have been asked to bring “4 Cans 4 Conference” to benefit the local Food Banks, and the array of nearby agencies and churches which draw from their resources to help feed those in need. Together, “4 Cans...” at a time, we have contributed nearly 60,000 pounds of food to help others, in the time of the year when the “incoming” supplies are often at their lowest levels. So, on behalf of all

those who are “downstream,” THANK YOU for your generous and gracious gifts for this offering.

When we gather in June 2015, let me invite you to bring “at least” 4 cans of food - for every clergy and every lay person who attends, so that, in a small way, we can help feed the children and families of the greater Roanoke-Salem area who are “at risk” from hunger issues.

Each person coming to the June 2015 Annual Conference is asked to bring at least: a can of soup or stew, a can of veggies or fruit, a can of meat or fish, and a can with a pop-top (any contents) for easy opening by the recipient. In addition, peanut butter and jelly are always needed, as are dry goods such as rice, pasta, pancake mix, grits, and mixes such as Hamburger Helper and boxed macaroni and cheese.

Please DO NOT bring glass jars (they break too easily), home-canned goods, bent or “crinkled” cans, out-of-date items, or exotic or limited use things (remember: not everyone loves things like your favorite - pickled jalapeno pepper jelly!)

We will be setting up a large U-Haul truck near the “Kits” trucks in the Convention Center Parking Lot, with banners and directional signs, to help with “one stop dropping off” of your items. If you’re not able to bring food, the Food Bank will be glad to receive either cash or checks made payable to “Food Bank.”

Also, if you would like to help in the gathering of these gifts, consider spending a couple of hours with like-minded friends receiving the goods. I will be setting up a “Sign Up Genius” site by mid-May, and invite you to help in the gathering, sorting, and preparing of the goods for transport and delivery to the nearby Food Bank.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, either by calling Walker Chapel UMC in Arlington (703-538-5200) or by e-mail ([email protected]) as soon as possible. Engage your Church’s Women’s / Men’s Groups, Mission Emphasis folks, Youth, Sunday School Classes, Lay Member and Pastor(s) or even your congregation-at-large. Send - or bring - 4 Cans, 4 Boxes of Cans, 14 or even 40 Boxes of Cans, or even $40 (which will feed a great many hungry folks!).

Let’s pass 10,000 pounds of food in our 2015 “4 Cans 4 Conference” offering!

Thank you for your generosity!Grace and peace.Jim EarleyWalker Chapel United Methodist Church4102 N.

Imagine No MalariaThe Madison UM Charge sold lemonade at Yoder's Country Market Sat., April 25 from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM.  The money counters report that we brought in $269.31.  I've attached a picture of one shift of our workers.  Our youth made the posters in the background.

Madison County had a lot of special events this morning and a number of our members were committed to those, but still we felt good about our lemonade sales on this damp, cold day.  Three other travelers who saw us, said, "Oh!  Our church is doing that, too!"

I hope the Conference will have had a good day of fundraising!  Yours in Christ,Betsy CaudillThe Madison UM Charge

Mission Work Area – Did you know?Family Backpack Program For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:10 NIV)Ten years ago, Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia started a backpack partnership program with Greer Elementary School in Albemarle County. Greer is one of the most diverse schools in Albemarle County with over 20 languages spoken by its student body. Greer’s school population has approximately 85% of its children being on free and reduced lunches. Our backpack program began packing backpacks of food for 200 children deemed to be in need. These bags contained milk, tuna, peanut butter, canned vegetables, boxed macaroni and cheese, etc. Two years ago we changed from packing bags for individuals to family style food such as boxes of cereal, canisters of oatmeal, multiple cans of soup, bags of rice, beans, and pasta, canned fruits and vegetables. Starting the family style program for 150 families has enabled us to reach over 700 people each week, a huge difference from the original 200 children each week. We realized that not including the family left others at home with nothing to eat.How does the program work? The food comes from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank through the Feeding America Program. Aldersgate has been blessed to receive grant money so that all food distributed each week is of no cost to the church or the families who participate. Each Wednesday, volunteers meet the food truck and unload approximately 1,500 to 2,000 pounds of food. On Thursday evenings during the school year, church volunteers go to Greer and pack the bags of food for the families. Each Friday morning the bags of food are delivered to the student’s classroom by teachers to take home. This food helps provide for those families who may not have food over the weekends. Thanks be to God.Person Submitting: Deb Reynolds Backpack coordinatorChurch: Aldersgate United Methodist

Pancake Breakfast Fund RaiserA total of $935 was raised for Heart Havens. Another $476 was raised for the Matthew 25 Fund.

All three churches in the Rapidan Charge were represented. Members from other churches that attended were from Beth Car Baptist, Our Lady of the Blue Ridge Roman  Catholic, and Fairview Christian. Others came from the announcements in the two local papers. And still others came from the posting of the event on the Madison Chamber of Commerce website.

Project SPYSummer Project Youth (SPY) is a week long mission adventure for middle and high school students. It is a home repair ministry making homes safer, warmer, and drier for families in the New River Valley who need our helping hands. Spiritually, we seek to be God's hands and feet in the world. Because of God's love for us, we are working to love others in tangible ways. During their stay, students will be guided through a necessary home repair project, while experiencing dynamic worship and focused discipleship, topped off with incredible amounts of fun. Our Project, in essence, is to provide you with all of the required support for you to lead your students in a life changing ministry. If you would like more detailed information or would like to schedule a meeting at your church, please contact me, Justin Gilly ([email protected]). I look forward to hearing from you and I look forward to the seeing you this summer at Project SPY!

A vine symbolizes Christ, the foundation of life and nourishment of all people, who, in turn, are like branches. When separate from the vine, we branches can’t survive – at least not spiritually. “Apart from me,” says Jesus, “you can do nothing” (John 15:5, NIV). But as God the gardener tends this relationship, we branches grow stronger and more mature in Jesus and alongside one another.
