This weekend, the2005 VAFA seasondraws to a close, with the A and BSection GrandFinals atSportscover Arena ,

and the promise of great games on bothSaturday and Sunday. Congratulationsto those clubs which have already wonpremierships, and commiserations tothose who missed out in 2005.

While I am generally reluctant to mentionindividual clubs, it is of significance tonote the fact that several "district" clubsappear to be on the rise . Beaumaris isback in B Grade, and Fitzroy Reds andOrmond have advanced to C Grade .These clubs have excellent, forwardthinking administrations, and we hopethat they can continue their progress .Congratulations also to Uni Blacks onwinning back-to-back flags . Can theymake it three in a row, and achieve aplace in A Grade in 2007?

On 27 September, the All AustralianAmateur Under 23 team leaves forIreland, and will play four games ofInternational Rules . There are nine VAFArepresentatives in the team . We see thisas a great innovation for our (and SA andWA amateur players), as it provides afocus and incentive for our youngerplayers to achieve at the highest level . Weare hopeful that the Ireland trip willbecome a regular occurrence .

From the VAFA's point of view, the 2005season has been a great success . Thestandard of football in all the gradescontinues to improve . We have been ableto provide two umpires for nearly all ourgames, with umpire numbers (andtherefore umpiring standards)significantly higher. I would thank (andcongratulate) Brian Goodman for hisefforts in his first year as our UmpireOperations Manager. I would also thankthe members of the VAFA Executive, andin particular Chairman Nick Bourke, fortheir work. As with all our clubs, theAssociation is dependent :)n manypeople giving of their tir- 1 efforts, and I would thank all those at inthe hours week in, week out, "f the loveof the game" .

I would also thank our hardworking stafffor their efforts during the 2005 season .There is no doubt that their dedication toAmateur football has contributedsignificantly to the successful andenjoyable season that we have had .

To the clubs participating in Gi . idFinals, and to the umpires v•'o '.lofficiate in them, the best of lucl . I__.no doubt that we will see great footb-11 .

the opportunity

The VAFA season

comes to a climax with

the A and B section

finals this weekend . It

has been a

challenging and

exciting year for me

personally and for all

the staff at the VAFA .

Personally I have ha d

to visit matchesthroughout all sections and have enjoyed

the hospitality of many of the clubs . At all

the games that I have attended I have been

very impressed by the manner in which the

clubs administer the games . I have

nothing but praise for all club

administrators, players and umpires .

Much of the credit for the smooth running

of the competition must go to the General

Manager of Football Operations, Brett

Connell, who has overseen the

competition . It was with mixed feelings

that we received Brett's resignation from

the VAFA. He has been an incrediblv

diligent worker for 12 years progressing

from administration assistant to his

current position. On behalf of the

Executive, staff and all the VAFA

community, I congratulate Brett on his

exceptional work and wish him every

success in his new position at the VCFL .

One of the key responsibilities of the VAFA

is to supply proficient umpires to all

sections . We are very proud of the fact

that nearly all VAFA matches were

conducted with 2 field umpires and much

of this is due to the hard work of

operations manager, Brian Goodman .

Whilst other competitions are floundering

in this department we are getting stronger .

I have no doubt that we have the best

umpires in community football in

Australia . Congratulations to Brian and

!its team .

Representative football continues to grow

and is one enormous point that set us

aside from any other Melbourne football

competition. The Under 19 North v South

match was a great success and George

Voyage continued his great run in the A-

D4 match against the Southern League .

The Under 23's had a great win in WA in

very trying conditions and unfortunately,

in Nick Bourke's final match as Senior Rep

Coach, his team battled valiantly but

eventually lost to a talented VCFL .

For the first time an Australian Amateur

team will travel to Ireland and play four

matches in Dublin, Galway and Cork . InDublin we are playing against the All

Ireland team at the famous Coke Park . In

Galway the two matches are against the

National University of Ireland and the

armed forces at the city's main ground,

Pearse Stadium . Many thanks to those

clubs and players that supported the $2

day in July with the money raised

subsidising three VAFA players' trip .

One of the more controversial inclusions

this year has been the front page editorial

by Jonathon Horn. We endeavoured to

make that page more interesting to all

readers of the Amateur Footballer and not

be an administrative page . We are very

pleased with the response to Jonathon's

articles as many of them are controversial

and instill much debate .

Finally, thanks to all the VAFA people who

have supported me in my first year as the

CEO from the Executive members, staff,

(namely Sue Anderson, Kate Balme, Adam

Clemente, Peter Harris, Tony O'Callghan,

Cliff Bastow & Nancy McTaggart) and all of

the clubs. Good luck to the teams

competing today, congratulations to the

teams who have already won premierships

or gained promotion and well done to all

71 VAFA clubs .

Old Xavs - Can it be done?Unless vou're affiliated with the Ol dXaverians, the name Kevin O'Shaughness yprobably doesn't mean that much to you .He's the guy who guided the Xavier Collegeschool side to consecutive premiershipsdating back to the invention of the wheel .

Later, he moved on to an executive role at the

Old Xaverians and helped oversee their reign

of flags in A Section . As the boys in Red &

Black face their stiffest test to date, it's worthconsidering just what O'Shaughnessy and

Old Xavs players in general are capable of .

You only have to look at last week's

extraordinary win over Haileybury to realisethat this is a side you write off at your peril .

The majority of their players played underwhat the Xavs website calls the "sage like

guidance of the Yoda of the APS"

(O'Shaughnessy) at Xavier and know what ittakes to rack up premierships . Ford,

Ockleshaw, Woodruff, Lynch, Purss,Beetham and many others went to Xavier

and play that brand of football whichcharacterises their school sides, their Old

Boys sides and even the blokes who kick

onto AFL . Set your game around a dominant

ruckman. Flick the ball out to your key

runner out the back of the pack . Chuck a

couple of guns on a back flank and give them

a license to run . Make sure your players get

in the grVrn and are physically bigger than the

opposition . Protect your gun on-ballers with

blocks . And discipline . Xavier sides are

always disciplined . One up one down, punch

from behind, don't get sucked in, don't

lairise. Simple stuff, but it makes a

difference .More than anything, they know how to win

finals and prove everyone wrong . In 1996, I

played against them when they had won justtwo from eleven and were staring relegation

square in the face . Dom Berry swaggered

onto the field looking like Marlon Brando . We

thought they were a complete and utter joke .

Two months later, theywere premiers . In atleast three of theirGrand Final wins, theywent in as underdogswhile many of their keyfinals victories have been upsets .

Of course . several of the stars of this side

didn't go to the school at all . They have

picked up three absolute gems from Ballarat :Tim Clarke, Travis Ruyg and Mike Beardsley .

Anthony McDonald, who is probably the in-

form player in the competition at themoment, is himself from the famous

breeding ground of St Pats Ballarat andreturned to the Xavs after a successful

career at Melbourne . Adam Chatfield came

via Geelong and Pennant Hills in NSW .

Justin Arnold crossed over from the

Diamond Vallev. Simon Lethlean from

Camberwell Grammar. But they all play that

familiar brand of football .

But Xavs, we have a problem . . .Could I talk up the Xavs any more?! Well, it'stime to execute a Crazy Ivan, shift courseand introduce the team in the Blue corner .Everyone I've spoken to this week, many ofwhom have been watching Amateur footballfor decades, say Uni Blues are the best VAFAside they have ever seen .You certainly wouldn't know it by looking atthem. Most of their players look like the sort

of guys you'd sit next to in a Uni lecture hall,en route to Naughton 's for a couple of AamirSohails . And they are pretty much unknownoutside amateur circles ; while Xavs havealmost a dozen players who have been on

AFL or VFL lists, the Blues are decidedlymore low key. Ross Young, their star of 2004,crossed over from playing social footy for theUni colleges . Mark Paterson, their star of2005, was coaxed into joining the club by a

mate who used to pump weights with him atthe Melbourne Uni gym. They have adeliberate policy of not playing ex AFLplayers . They barely have a player over 6foot . Their coach sits in the box crackinggags . Only when they run the length of the

field with a chain of a dozen handballs doesit hit home just how good this team is .O'Clouds Unfold!Only rain can save the Xavs . Mike Larkamfrom Channel 10 (in a chicken suit I believe)and Dermott Brereton from the Todayprogram (words fail me Derm) have bothbeen down to Sportscover Arena during theweek and forecast rain for Sunday . If it peltsdown and the ground turns into a quagmire,Uni's runners will be bogged down and Xavswill turn it into a war of attrition . If it's dry, write your own ticket . Any other year, againstany other team, I would go for the Xaverians .But against the Blues? You've gotta bekidding me: Uni By 75 points .Jonathan Horn

struggle in the second semi final with Li-eBlue and Golds finishing all over the top o"their opponents who must still be ruing theirinaccuracy .Buoyed by the week's rest the DLS boys willcertainly be refreshed and will come outready to play . But Amateur Football providesmany twists and turns and sometimes in athree week finals series it is the side whoplays every week that is able to eke out someform of advantage .The Hoers would have learnt some lessons

from their loss a fortnight ago and certainlywon't let DLS have as much latitude upforward as before, and if they are to win theyhave to play tight man on man football tostop De La Salle being able to burrow in an

d get their running game going.Healthy respect here for them both butunfortunatey there can only be one winnerand in an against the selection grain tip Itip Old Ivanhoe to reverse the result of afortnight ago and take the title . Good luck toall participating .

As I put my pen t. .va;- aft- another season Iwould sincerely like to thank Don Dowell .Andy Mullett Matt Clinch and Nick Parry fortheir detailed analysis of their games eachand every week it certainly made my jobmuch easier . To all the others whocontributed intermittently my thanks to youas well . Look forward to returning yet againin 2006 .

They came, they saw, they conquered CGrade and would now have a lot of BGrade sides very nervous at the prospectof confronting them . Congratulations toUni Blacks, the champion side of 2005 .

BLACKS v SHARKS

GRAND FINAL REVIEWA massive crowd packed into Trevor

Barker Oval to witness the contest

between `05s best sides . As a warm up t o

the main event, the club shead in the Reserves,

with Beauy leading at

every change and

recording a hard fought

18 point victory .

Sharks supporters were

optimistic the big game

would also go their

way .

Needing a fast start,

went head to

minimal easy

possessions for

their players .

Boon and

Wonnacott were

trying to stem the tide and despite Martinbeing influential in two late Beaumarismajors, the Blacks had edged nearly fivegoals to the good and it was going to takea huge second half turnaround to see Unibeing eclipsed .If the Sharks were to muster their way

, hey came, they saw, they

conquered C Grade and would

confronting them. Congratulations

to Uni Blacks, the champion side

of 2005.1 1the Sharks knew the y

needed to make their presence felt and

whilst the blue and golds went in hard the

Blacks like nothing more than rolling up

their sleeves and getting in and under in

order to win possession . A goal on quarter

time to Matulick left the Sharks within

striking distance, but there would have

been some worried Beau_v officialdom at

the way Uni was using possession and

pressuring the second placed finishers .

The Blacks midfielders were regularly

getting their hands on the ball with

Batten, Costello and Matt Kempton

propelling Uni forward at every

opportunity . By contrast the Sharks were

constantly shadowed and there were

across the forward zone whilst Purcell andGoonan were miserly down back, notgiving their opponents any opportunity towork into the game .The crowd was being dazzled not only on

the ground, but also above it, as jags of

lightning and massive thunderclaps

echoed around the stadium. Much of the

crowd sought refuge from the downpour

and even more were sent scurrying as hale

stones began to tumble . For the third

successive quarter, Beauy could only

manage two goals one as Uni stamped

their authority, bagging seven big ones .

From the "it could only happen in

Melbourne file" the last term began in

beautiful sunshine and the Uni players

whilst tired, savoured every moment . The

Sharks Haynes continued to wrack up

stats and McNicholas and Heath fought

on, but this was ultimately a losing battle .

Across the ground Anthony Parkin's

charges had all the answers and with

Shaw and Bevacqua rounding off excellent

games, the Blacks emphatic 79 point

winning margin attested to their

wonderful season and continued their

charge back towards A section honours .

The Michael Ritterman medal for the best

player on the ground could have gone to

any number of Uni players, Matt Kempton

was a very worthy recipient .

Congratulations to Beauy also on a terrific

year and they will be hoping along with

Blacks to ruffle a few B Grade sides

feathers, next year. Good Luck .

"I feet like oneWho treads alone

Some banquet-hall deserted ,

Thomas Moore )

The great Irish troubadour's bittersweet

phrases most appositely sum up this

scribe's sentiments when sitting at the

keyboard inputting the post Grand final

copy. Mad Mondays occurring all over

Melbourne, and here one is, struggling to

capture the climactic finale to our season

in words that never seem adequate for 'the

smiles and tears' engendered by the

winning & losing of a Flag .

Congratulations to Graham Burgen's Reds

on taking out the 2005 Flag and to Tim

Davis, Reds' Full Back on winning the

J .W. Manton Medal for 2005 !

11 hat killed them was the Reds80% goals/points ratio, which

was maintained throughout thematch and has been a feature oftheir play all this season! "

At least the weather was half kind to us &

the beautifully prepared BHCO arena

stood up to the 'super-sized' rain drops

that beset us in the mid-portion of the

Senior match, that had the very large

crowd scampering for cover! Our thanks

to Andrew Pirchan, the Box Hill Hawks'

General Manager for all his help in

making the 2005 finals series such a

success, andwhich includedthe bonus gamelast Sundayweek (4 Sep . )featuring Old Scotch & Old Xavs in the ASection 1 st Semi final !Thanks also to the VAFA CEO Michael

GRAND FINALSSENIOR

As evidenced by the scores opposite,

Fitzroy Reds had Ormond in all sorts of

bother by the end of g l . The Monds

contested every possession round the

ground in the opening term, what killed

them was the Reds 80% goals/points

play all this season! Led by Tim Davis &

Conor Dullard, the Reds entire defence

gave the Monds forwards no leeway at all

in their scoring sector, nor was the Monds

flying squad ever able to wreak their usual

havoc round the ground . Both sides

actually handled the change from dry to

slippery conditions mid-game very

professionally, but even so the Reds

adapted better as they inexorably

increased their lead right up until the

final siren. In fact, there was an eerie

similarity between Reds' win and that of

Uni Blacks in 2004, with Reds being even

more impressive than UB on the

scoreboard! Both our 2005 D1 Grand

Finalists will be competitive in C Section

and we look forward to watching their

progress! Having extolled the virtues of

the Reds defence, I must add, that their

overall performance has been enhanced

by the presence of a couple of lively true-

boots like Phil Cianci & Kane Maghamez

up the sharp end! Monds had top efforts

from Shane Metz, Garrin Bailey & David

Robbins in particular, and, in general,

David Matthew's 22 were a bit stiff to

encounter such Red Hot opponents on theday. Congratulations & thanks to both

Clubs !

RESERVE

Fitzroy Reds took charge of the early

match in g2 & regardless of the Old

Mentonians' endeavours, they were never

able to bridge the gap thereafter. David &

Chris Alexander stood out for the

Panthers against tough & united

opposition. A great start to a wonderfu lday for Chris Tehan's Reds !

Correspondents

I have now been contributing to the

Amateur Footballer since the early 90's,

initially as an occasional back-up to

Scribes who were caught with work

commitments, etc, and from 1994

onwards under my own by-line in SectionsDI to D4. It had been a privilege & a

pleasure to have an involvement with all

the Correspondents and their Clubs over

that period . I think now it is time to stop

the club's 51-year history .Apart from their loss in round 10 to

Williamstown, only Peninsula had got to Reserveswithin four goals of the dominant Ogs al l

season before the Woods gave them the fright

of their lives, succumbing by 21 points .Inaccurate kicking marred the first quarter,

the Ogs holding a narrow lead at the firstbreak before piling on three goals to one in

the second term for a handy 20-point bufferat ilie long break .

But the Ioods, beaten in the D3 Grand Finalby Oakleigh last year, refused to lay down,

kicking three goals to draw within five points

at the final change .Despite being unchallenged for much of the

year, the Ogs dug deep in the final term, kicking three clutch goals to ice a

premiership which many had thought a fait

accompli midway through the season .

Club champion Jamie Bell capped off a

brilliant season, earning best-on-groundhonours from the Ogs hierarchy but the

Anthony Fellows Medallist was awarded to

Steve Lansdell .

The premiership ended a 15-year drought forthe Ogs, but the challenge is now on for theclub to taste success as they climb throughthe ranks .Meanwhile, Rupertswood will have to gothrough another sui_ mer with mixed

The Oggery was the place to be on Sunday

afternoon, the club having completed thesenior double by taking out the twos

premiership as well . Tekka Verge'sundefeated team were never threatened

in three quarters on their way to a 33-point triumph .

2005 SEASON REVIEWAs was the expectation of many followersof D2, Old Geelong took the flag and

promotion to D1 at the second time ofasking, after finishing third in 2004 .

Perhaps the extra year in D2 was a

team in this grade by some margin, andshould go on and do well in the highergrade next season .Rupertswood continued their upward

momentum with another promotion .Unfortunately, it was another defeat in the

showpiece occasion of the season (afterlosing the 2004 D3 Grand Final to

Oakleigh), and it will be interesting to see

how Rupo handle another step up .However, I think consolidation will be an

attainable target at this level for 2006 .After a slow start, perhaps still coming to

terms with relegation from DI, E' eninsul<_t Boys found momentum a month into

the season and were amongst the moreimpressive performers in D2 from then on .They must be close to premiership

favourites next year, and I wouldn't besurprised if their form in 2006 mirrored

that of Old Geelong in 2005 .Williamstown GYMS were the best of therest in 2005 . They will look to at leastmatch that effort in 2006, but certainly

won't have it all their own way .

2004 D3 Premiers Oakleigh and LaTrobeUniversity were both still chances ofpinching fourth spot in the final weeks ofthe season but were ultimately unable tolast the distance. They will be looking forgreater consistency next season .Salesian Old Collegians were reallyneither here nor there for the majority of

2005 after dropping down from DI . Theyshowed more consistency and quality for a

large part of the second half of 2005, andthis will hopefully bode well next season .Ivanhoe Assumption and Bentleigh

fought it out to avoid the dreaded ninthposition, and early on, Bentleigh appearedto have the edge. The second half of theHoes season provides some

encouragement for next year, while it's

back to D3 for Bentleigh, who never reallymade an impact in D2, but shouldcontend for D3 finals in 2006 .Finally, Swinburne University were neverin the hunt, losing all eighteen matches .It doesn't look promising at this earlystage, but they have all summer to turn itaround .

CorrespondentsSpecial thanks to all correspondents fortheir input throughout the season, especially to Ivanhoe Assumption and

Swinburne University, who despiteenduring lean seasons on the field neverfailed to file reports . Without the loyaltyand support of correspondents, thiscolumn would be very thin on content .

Huge interest in the A Section Grand Finalwith Old :c~averiaras earning the right ofanother crack at St Bernards, their nemesisfrom the second semi-final . Opposingcoaches, Tim O'Shaughnessy (Xavs) and

Gary Foulds (St Bernards), had every rightto be confident in their respective line-ups .Mark Gibson and Tim Sutcliffe were the field

umpires in the big game . Old Xaverians'reserves won the early game and gavethe massive Xavs crowd that extra bit of

impetus as they accepted the Noel RundlePremiership Cup before the start of the main

game .After an even first quarter, 5 .3 to 5.0 inXavs' favour, the lead was increased slightly

at half time, 9 .6 to 8 .2 . St Bernards weregreat in the third term and slammed on 7

goals to 3 to hold a handy lead, 15 .3 to 12 .8,before the Xavs machine respondedmagnificently in the final term with 10 goals

to run out easy winners 22 .14 to 16 .5 . Theirsixth successive premiership had beenachieved, an outstanding performance by

the leading VAFA club . Best players ; Jones(3) . Cranage, Ford, Sassi, Blood, Landrigan,Richardson (5) for Xavs and D Byrne (5),

What a great game was turned on byElsternwick and St . Mary's! A hint of awalkover was evident early but to theSaints credit, they stuck with the task anserved up to the highly fancied Wicks .Loss of a game, but no loss of face .

Threats of the odd downpour but no windgreeted the sides on Saturday . The highlyfancied Elsternwick hit the groundrunning and but for some inaccuratekicking may well have run away with thegame early. Byrne was proving the dangerman up forward for the Wicks whilst Grillowas providing plenty of drive of the halfback flank for the Saints. A couple ofagainst the flow goals late for the Saintssaw it tight at the first break .

The evenness continued in the secondquarter as goals were traded . A heavyknock to Kodituwaku proved pivotal as hewas doing a fine blanketing job on thedangerous Grace . A freed up Graceslammed on some goals whilst therunners of the Wicks, notably Bedingfield,C Mahony and Curtain began clicking intogear. Five unanswered goals saw the leadget out to 31 points before a late Saintsgoal reduced the lead to 25 points at themain break. The general consensus wasthat the Wicks were starting to exert theirauthority and would be hard to matchfrom here .

A send off and the resultant goal in thefirst few minutes of the third term saw thewell proportioned lady running throughher scales however the Saints had otherideas. With C Armstrong winning everyball out of the centre, Wright barging hisway through packs and Crilly winning theball at will across half forward, the Saints

rammed on 4unansweredgoals to drawevei with th e

Wicks . Game on! Against the flow of phand with the back drop of huge clapsthunder, Grace calmly slotted throughsteadier before Byrne again chipped iiputting the Wicks up by 2 goals at the la:

Had the Saints run their race? Would theblack and red machine click into gear?Despite conceding the first goal, the Saintscontinued to press . The men of the hourproved to be Mason and Thiele down back, who constantly thwarted the Saintsattack .

A snap from C Armstrong grazed the postwhilst fittingly Byrne slotted the winnerfor the Wicks .

Ultimately, a deserved victory for the sidebest performed for the year. No doubt thecrew at St . Mary's wouldn't be consoled byan honourable loss however the fact isthey didn't die wondering and gaveeverything they had . Well done to DennisGrace and his team on a job well done butalso to Michael Learmonth and his Saintsfor providing a truly wonderful game !

Section On eMarcellin secured their first Section Oneflag in fifteen years last weekend, cruisingto a 61 point win over a gallant Collegiansside . Dominating from the outset the

Eagles were unstoppable in the openingterm, the minor premiers slamming on 4 .8to just 0.3 despite the absence of sin-binned ruckman Mark McKasker .

Jason Crapper was simply brilliant on thewing in the first quarter, racking up a

more than a dozen touches while regularlytransferring the ball from the defensive toattacking fifty . Daniel Considine and JakeSymes were also in season-best form, both

players resolute in defence shutting downa number of Collegians chances on goal .

McKasker returned to the field for thestart of the second term, but it was

Collegians who started the better of thesides kicking two goals in the opening fourminutes . However Marcellin soon steppedup a gear responding with six of the next

seven to set up a 52 point half-time lead .McKasker was a tower of strength in the

second term, marking everything, whileshowing great skill and athleticism to

score a left foot blinder from deep in thepocket . Matt Turner and the athleticJames Winstanley were also prolific acrossthe half-forward line, teaming up nicely

with the on ball brigade led by PeterAugustin and Simon Abrahams .

Down by more than eight goals at the longbreak Mick Jones asked for a big quarterfrom the boys in purple and gold, and thereigning Section Two premiers respondedwith three of the first four goals in thethird term. However just as Collegiansstarted to look like faint premiershipcontenders, Marcellin slotted through thelast three of the quarter to put the resultbeyond doubt .Slamming on five goals to two in the finalterm Marcellin confirmed their dominanceof Section One cruising to a ten-goal winin convincing fashion . Tim Montagnashowed great dash from half-back to set

up anothersix-pointe rlate in the 1quarter, whil eRob Tabacchiera and 'Bluey' McGli .picked up plenty of the ball through thmiddle of the ground . James Winstanlewas fittingly awarded the Alex Johnso;medal for best on ground, as Dean Rossel

held the JS McCann Cup aloft for the firstime in his coaching career .Section 2Grand Final ReviewBanyule - v - RupertswoodIn cool overcast conditions, which turne(threatening with each lightning bolt anu

never gave an inch and performed to theirutmost when it counted .In the final analysis, Rupertswood gaveBanyule too much latitude in the secondterm, when Tsingaris started to findplenty of the pill courtesy of Shepard-Mueller, Drapac and Skicko . Phillips was adeserving winner of the medal for BOG,despite falling on the losing side of theledger. He was ably supported byBaddeley, Anderson and Harrison (whokicked 4 goals) . With a 4 goal lead at thefinal change, the Bears simply had totough it out against the inevitable Rupoonslaught, and this they did, earning themost satisfying win on the most importantday of the year .With both sides feeding their D Gradeseniors next year, I'd expect a fair few of

these boys to face-off again in the senior

ranks in season 2006 .

Section 3Grand Final ReviewOld Paradians - v- OakleighAs expected, the opening stanzacommenced at a blistering pace with both

sides throwing their weight around whichresulted in some bone jarring clashes . The

pressure applied by both sides wasrelentless and the skills displayed by both

sides was well appreciated by the large

crowd . Rob Thomas was never going to BeLonely at CHF for Parade, the subject of

some close attention by the opposition, hisendeavour and attack at the football

netted him with 3 valuable goals and thePeter Harris medal . He was more than well

supported by Soloman who was a focalpoint of attack for the whole game, in

which he bagged 6 big ones . Pound-Gowrucked tirelessly for the vanquished, but

was no match for Matko and Kruezer, who

both dominated around the ground withtelling marks .

Oakeigh refused to give up the chase andcame back hard in the last quarter, withMacKenzie, Cleary and Edwards workinghard up forward to present for their team-mates ensuring they finished the gameright to the end. Overall, the Raidersrunning game, together with their tenacityand determination netted the team back toback premierships, which was a greatresult for the players and club .

Section BlueGrand Final ReviewOrmond - v - Mazenod

Due to injuries and a need to reverse thesecond semi result, Mazenod set up very

differently and put in their most consistentintense effort of the season in the mostimportant game of the year . With their key

position players shuffled, Bayliss (FB), Duke

(CHB) and Regan (FF) had new challengeswhich they relished . Mazenod played free

running, hard tackling, team football andwell deserved their lead at the final change .

With a few key changes of personnel, theMonders hit the park and gathered

momentum . Bailey, Barnes, Brosnan andUpstill started to have a greater impact . After

being overpowered in the last three games adesperate Mazenod had held the ascendancy

until the 20 minute mark. Their fierce

tackling had stopped Ormond from gettingtheir running game going, yet the dangerousRob Chisholm, who would ultimately receive

the John Simpson medal, kept his side in

touch with goals in each quarter .

When Ormond hit back in the last quarterthey got to 9 points in front and again

Mazenod came back to 3 points, continuingto attack and were extremely unlucky not to

have got one of four thrusts through the

goals before the siren blew . For the

vanquished, a feeling of devastation wasclear but they exceeded everyone's

expectations bar their own . Bogar booted 6goals, whilst Crameri, Bonner and Duke

were simply tireless in their efforts .

Section RedEmmaus St Leos confirmed their pre-matchfavoritism last weekend with a crushing 86point win over Kew in the Section Red GrandFinal . The club's second under-nineteen flagin the past six years, The Animals were fartoo strong from the outset and never lookedchallenged .Kicking six goals to one in a dominantopening term, Emmaus looked fresh fromtheir week off and showed no ill-effects froma fortnight without competitive football . Afterjust scraping home against Kew in thesecond semi-final two weeks earlier,Emmaus looked intent on proving theirstatus as the competition's best side as theyoutclassed their opposition in all areas of theground .
