6 MAY 2018 SAINT ALOYSIUS PARISH PAGE 3

What does it mean to love God? First and foremost it requires loving him above all things. It is to understand and operate under the concept that God is above everything. Loving God should be expressed in our lives, maintaining and keeping his days of celebration like Sunday Mass, respecting life in all its expressions, not lying, not stealing. In conclusion, loving God means keeping His commandments. In doing so we recognize that He is the beginning and the end and that our lives depend on Him. Jesus exhorts us to love God: "Remain in my love." This is not a mere exhortation or advice. It is a commandment. If we are believers, our faith must be seen in the concrete and in the ordinary of our existence. The words "I love you" and the actions must go hand in hand. One way to express our love for others through what we do is to exercise "caritas". Doing things with charity does not only refer to giving to the poor. Having charity with another person implies that we put ourselves in the position of that other person and treat them as we would like them to treat us. The one who exercises charity gives a show of deep respect and love of neighbor, doing good. It requires doing good to everyone: friends, enemies, acquaintances, strangers, that is everyone ... In this context, loving needs a manifestation or active, visual expression that can be felt. Love allows us to have the strength to perform feats and wonderful things. Knowing how to love, without hidden agendas, freely gives us the wisdom to give the loved one what he needs and in this way express our charity to our neighbor. Sisters and brothers, let us love in the concrete, with the certainty that God calls us to love, to be part of his elect and to bear abundant fruits for the glory of God and for the salvation of his people. ¿Qué significa amar a Dios?

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER PAGE 5

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS/ NOTICIAS DEL CATECISMO

The Lord's Peace be with you! This weekend fifteen of our students, surrounded by loving family members, are celebrating their First Holy Communion. This is a momentous occasion in the life of every baptized Catholic. The fact that this ceremony takes place during the Easter Season makes it even more special. Our readings for this Sixth Sunday of Easter place great emphasis on God’s love for each of us. God sent His only Son to be a sacrificial offering for our sins. The gift of salvation comes to us by our faith in Jesus, and we show that faith by listening to and following the Word of Christ. His command in this Sunday’s Gospel is clear: “love one another as I love you.” Jesus loved to the point of giving himself entirely. He asks us as his followers to do the same for one another, and our First Communicants now have been strengthened with the ultimate spiritual food which enables them to do so. May God richly bless you! Collection: Catholic Charities Crowning of the Blessed Virgin Mary Mother’s Day

2:00pm Rosary—Chapel 7:00pm YAM Fellowship—Thiele Center Vestibule

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Mother’s Day is a day we honor and remember the special women in our lives who have nurtured, loved and shaped us into the people we are today. It is through their unconditional love that we begin to under-stand the depth of Christ’s love for us, and his command to share that love with one another. On Mother’s Day, each of us will have an opportunity to share Christ’s unconditional love with the poor and vulnerable through our gift to the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection. For Catholic Charities, charity is not just about providing material assistance, but acting with the same love and mercy that Jesus showed to restore peo-ple’s dignity and give them the hope of a brighter future. Catholic Charities counts on our volunteer and financial support to offer com-prehensive programs that get to the root cause of suffering, address multiple needs, and help people rebuild their lives for the better. Pope Francis has used a powerful image of the Church as “field hospitals.” During war, field hospitals are situated right on battle-grounds—close to the wounded who need help. Similarly, as part of the Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago, Catholic Charities 150 service locations are very much like field hospitals, helping those who are suffering, and located in neighborhoods that have sadly become like real battlegrounds, plagued with violence and despair. Catholic Charities program sites are safe havens in desperate areas and their staff and volunteers are truly ministers of mercy, providing help through a hot meal, a bag of food, a place to live, the care of a child or elderly relative, counseling, job training, job placement, or all of these things. Serving nearly one million people each year, Catholic Charities brings Christ’s love and mercy to the people and the places that need it most. Please accept my sincere gratitude for your past support of the Catholic Charities Mother’s Day Collection, and please consider being as generous as you can again this year. Contributions can be made during the second collection on Mother’s Day, anytime at www.catholiccharities.net/donate, or mail your gift to Catholic Chari-ties, 721 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL 60654. May God bless you and those you love this Mother’s Day and always. With every good wish, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ,
