In Memoriam

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT  Dear Friends:              Since  I began as a  faculty member  in the Theology department  in September of 2001,  I have been so impressed by the commitment of the Archbishop Carroll community to excellence in the areas of spiritual, aca‐demic, and social development of our students.   Our Catholic  identity  is  the center and  reason  for our exis‐tence.  All the various segments of our community have worked diligently since September of 1967 to provide a strong Catholic education and to form young people to live out their calling to follow Jesus.   We are proud to boast a very strong and vibrant Alumni who continue to live out the motto, “Carroll Cares”.    Since  the  first  graduating  class  in  1970,  13,200  young  men  and  women  have  graduated  from Archbishop John Carroll High School.  This wouldn’t be possible without the support of those that came before.    In this issue of Allegiance, we will chronicle many of the exciting things and events that are happening at Carroll.   Many of these things are made possible through your continued support and contributions to the Carroll Fund. I thank you, Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Carroll as you continue to show your belief and sup‐port of the quality education that our students are receiving and I thank you for helping to ensure this tradition continues.   You have shown that “You Still Care” by the sharing of your time, talent, or treasure.  I would ask you to please be generous again this year by your contribution to the Carroll Fund 2011.   The Carroll Fund makes possible the Tuition Assistance Program, which is so important to our mission.  Many grateful students are able to receive a Catholic education through your generosity.   The Archbishop Carroll High School family  is a true community centered on Jesus Christ and his gospel and I thank you for your help in continuing to build up this portion of His Kingdom.  God Bless you.  Sincerely,  Rev. Edward J. Casey President

A BITTERSWEET FAREWELL

We had two of our Board Members retire this year.  The dedication that Brian Zwaan (‘76) and Tom Brophy gave to Carroll will be remembered for many years to come.  It’s bitter be‐cause we’ll miss their undying commitment to our school and sweet because without them we wouldn’t  be where we  are  today  as  a  school  community.   During  their  time  on  the Board, countless positive changes have been made to  improve our school.   They have our undying gratitude.

We welcome our new Advisory Board Members, Drew Bilotta and Jim Quinlan.   Drew  is a 1979 graduate of Cardinal O’Hara and a 1982 graduate of The Wharton School at the Univer‐sity of Pennsylvania  .   Drew has been  in  the Financial Services business since 1983 and  is currently a Certified Financial planner operating his practice as PAX Partners.  He’s an active member of OLA Parish and teaches CCD.  He’s been married to his wife Dee for 22 years and has  two children attending Carroll.    Jim  is a 1981 graduate of Carroll and graduated  from Bucknell University and received his MBA  from Villanova University.   He’s currently Presi‐dent of Beneficial Advisors, a division of Beneficial Bank.  He and his wife Jenetta have been married for 19 years and have four children, two attend Bishop Shanahan and two attend SS. Simon and Jude.   We thank them for their service and know they’ll bring a  lot of good ideas to the board.

4TH ANNUAL GOLF OUTING FOR EDUCATION

Since its inception, the Annual Golf Tournament has raised over $200,000 for Tuition Assistance. Please consider playing or being a hole sponsor for this very important fundraiser and remember that all the proceeds from this event stay at Carroll and are used to benefit our students. Visit the website for details www.jcarroll.org or call the Development Office at 610-688-7610 ext. 125. Many thanks to Dick Costa (‘72) and his committee for organizing this event.

We continue to be encouraged by our solid enrollment figures. Taking a look back, in the period from 1990 to 1999 the average size of the graduating class of AJCHS was 224. In the ten year period just ended, 2000-2010 the average size of the graduating class was 248. Right now, the average of our Freshman, Sophomore and Junior classes is 264. If we take just the Freshman and Sophomore classes the average stands at 281. Enrollment is critical for our school for so many reasons. Special thanks for the efforts of the AJCHS Advisory Board, the Enrollment Committee of the Advisory Board and espe-cially the day to day work of the Faculty, Administration, Staff AND students. The stu-dents themselves are many times the best ambassadors of the fact that “Carroll Cares”.

ENROLLMENT CONTINUES TO BE STRONG

MAY OUR JOURNEY BE A CONCERN FOR OTHERS, A ROAD OF PEACE AND A PATH OF LOVE

Campus Improvements The final touches were put on the renovation of the East Gym. The bleachers were completely re-built and refinished. The gym was repainted along with the locker rooms and the connecting hall-way. The gym floor was completely resurfaced with new logos being applied. In addition, volley-ball lines were installed on the new court as Volleyball has been moved to the “big gym”. Banners for the various championships in the different sports have been installed on the south wall of the gym. In addition, the first two PIAA state championship banners for our Girls and Boys Basket-ball Teams of 2009, have been raised on the east wall.

Over the past two years, many improvements have been made to the auditorium. In addition to repainting, new stage curtains were hung along with new red drapes in the rear of the auditorium. New steel doors were installed between the gym lobby areas and the academic towers on both sides. The inside doors at the main entrances on the east and west sides were also replaced. The rugs have been replaced along the back of the auditorium and down the aisles. In addition, the front of the auditorium will be carpeted for the first time, which will be better both aesthetically and acoustically. The stage floor has been sanded and refinished; the sound system is being up-graded. Finally, a computer/projector system has been installed in the communications room which will enhance our auditorium presentations. The West Cafeteria had new ceiling tiles in-stalled, and the PA system in the cafeteria was also revamped.

The band room and chorus room on the east side received new ceiling tiles. Several offices on the west side, including Accounting, President, Tuition Officer and Board Conference Room were painted and had new rugs installed.

The baseball field had the infield areas regraded and new infield grass was ready for the 2010 sea-son. In addition, a new backstop was installed which will is further back from home plate. New permanent bench areas were also installed. Work has also begun on clearing trees with a goal to have a centerfield fence distance of 380 feet. The theme for the pitchers will be “From Field of Screams to Field of Dreams”. We also intend to raise the left field fence level from 8 feet high to 16 feet high from the left field foul pole to left center. When finished, we will have the best field in the Catholic League.

A major capital project has taken place with the rewiring in the Curley Family Library. More power and electrical safeguards were needed in the library and computer lab. These upgrades to the power source and circuit breakers were essential. The old IU trailer outside the East gym has been demolished and that area has been cleaned and landscaped. Also the tennis courts, which have been condemned and unusable for the past 4 years, were also demolished and the area graded and reseeded. The extra field will be available for ninth grade football and track and field to work out.

Many of these improvements would not be possible without the  generosity of our alumni and benefactors.  Thanks to all of you.

ALUMNI HOST BEEF AND BEVERAGE TO BENEFIT SENIOR SHAWN FRIEL

Shawn Friel is an active 17 year old Carroll Senior. Over the summer, Shawn was diag-nosed with Osteosarcoma which is a cancer of the bones, the cancer originated in his shoulder and spread to both his lungs. Patrick Gilmore (‘09) and John Wynne (‘09) hosted a Beef and Beverage on September 10, 2010 to benefit the Friel family during this difficult time. Almost $10,000 was raised to help the Freil’s but what touched them the most was the outpouring of love from family, friends and even those who don’t know them. The Carroll Community is very thankful to our Alumni, Patrick and John, for or-ganizing this very important event and proving, once again, that Carroll Cares (even after you graduate).

If you’re interested in making a donation to the Friel family, please contact the Alumni/

Gifts of Cash

This is the most common method of providing a gift.  A cash

gift to Archbishop John Carroll H.S. is tax deductible.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities A gift of appreciated  securities allows  the donor  to make a

significant  contribution at a  reduced  cost.   Federal  tax  laws

allow a charitable deduction for the full market value of secu‐

rities on the date of the gift.

Gifts of Life Insurance   Absolute Assignment:  This method transfers owner‐ship of a policy  that has outlived  its original purpose  to  the individual.   Co‐Beneficiary:    This  method    names  Archbishop John Carroll H.S. as  co‐beneficiary of all or part of  the pro‐ceeds of a new or existing policy.

Gift of Annuity Agreements Annuity contributions are lump‐sum gifts to Archbishop John

Carroll H.S., and  in  turn Archbishop  John Carroll H.S. makes

fixed annual payments  to  the donor  for  life.   A donor  is al‐

lowed  a  tax  deduction  for  a  portion  of  the  amount  trans‐

ferred, and for a period of years only a part of the payments

will be taxed as income.  The size of payment is based on the

age (s) of the recipient (s) at the time of the gift.

Charitable Remainder Annuity Trusts and Unitrusts This  option  enables  the  donor  to make  a  significant  gift  to

Archbishop  John  Carroll  H.S.  during  their  lifetime  and  con‐

tinue to receive income for one self and / or other beneficiar‐

ies.  After the life interests have passed, the remaining princi‐

pal will pass  to Archbishop  John Carroll H.S..    In addition  to

income tax deductions in the year the trust is instituted (with

five‐year  carry‐over  privileges),  donors  may  avoid  capital

gains and significantly reduce estate and gift taxes.

Charitable Lead Trusts This option  enables Archbishop  John Carroll H.S.  to  receive

interest income for a specified period of time from a principal

amount that a donor retains at the end of the trust.

Bequests   These  are  provisions  in  wills  to  leave  a  gift  to Archbishop  John  Carroll  H.S.    Charitable  bequests  are  fully deductible  from  the  estate  and  can  significantly  reduce  es‐tate  taxes  on  the  balance  of  the  estate.   Bequests may  be specified as a gift of cash or securities,  real estate, or other property.  Alternatively, they may take the form of a percent‐age of the total estate.   A donor may also consider a residu‐ary bequest, which is a gift of all or a portion of one’s estate after other conditions are met.

BLOCS  (Business Leaders Organized for Catholic Schools)   BLOCS  is a financial aid program offered to students enrolled  in  grades  K‐12.    Assistance  is  given  to  those with greatest  financial need.   Forms can be picked up  in  the Tui‐tion Office in January.  Required documentation must be pro‐vided  for  the  application  to  be  processed.    All  information must be submitted by March 31st.

CAREER DAY 2010

Career Day has become a major event at Archbishop Carroll. In its current for-mat, inaugurated by Tim O’Brien ‘02, students follow their regular class schedule and two guest speakers replace the classroom teachers. This allows all students to hear from a variety of professions - not just a few. The entire event is coordinated and run by the John Carroll Chapter of the National Honor Society. The student chairs are re-sponsible for everything, so if you get a call from one of our students, please consider saying “yes”. If you already know you’re interested, feel free to send them an email at [email protected]. Last year’s keynote speaker was Steve Curley (‘88). This was Steve’s 16th year speaking at Career Day but his first as Keynote. In Steve’s words, “I remember when I was at Carroll, I barely knew what life after high school would be like, let alone how many interesting jobs happen every day, all around us. That was the message I tried to convey. Also, this year was special to me because they asked me, a lowly and humble chemical engineer, to be the keynote speaker at the beginning of the day. I addressed the whole school, telling them that on this Career Day, their world was about to get a whole lot bigger. Please consider signing up next year-- after doing this for 16 years, I can tell you that the kids really enjoy the day”!
