PRINCIPAL’S FOREWORD

During my time as acting Principal, I have been overwhelmed by the amount of, and the consistent excellence of, so many events that happen in Alexandra College. We have achieved success in all of the four areas represented in the crest and this is due in no small measure to the dedication of our excellent teaching staff. These successes could not happen without the enthusiasm and commitment of the staff, the participation and involvement of the students and the support of the Board of Management and members of Council. I thank the whole school community for their encouragement in ensuring that Alexandra College retains its position amongst the leading Irish school in both academic and extracurricular activities. We have participated in Art and Cultural events and have gained local and National successes in Debating, Drama, ICT, Music and Sports to name but a few of these activities; we have maintained our excellent academic standards and send all best wishes to the class of 2010 as they further their education at home, in England or further abroad.

During the year, the Council of Alexandra College disestablished the position of Vice Principal and we look forward to welcoming Mrs Farida Ryan as she returns to full time Science teaching in September. I thank the Council of Alexandra College for entrusting me with the position of acting Principal during the interregnum and I have enjoyed and relished this challenge. It is certainly true that one never knows the exact nature of a job until one has experienced the demands, privileges and satisfaction of the position. It has been a very enriching eight months for me and it will be with a new awareness that I resume the position of Deputy Principal in September. I would like to pay tribute the tireless energy with which Mr. Ben Murray embraced the position of acting Deputy Principal and thank him for being a great support to me as together we formed the Management Team of the school.

It was with joy that we heard the announcement that Mrs. Barbara Ennis had been appointed as the new Principal of Alexandra College; Mrs. Ennis is well known to most of the staff as she had been an Irish and English teacher with us for many years and Deputy Principal for two years prior to her appointment in 2002 as Principal of Rathdown School. Accordingly we extend a

Tcollege were appointed to be in charge of the yearbook. There was a great team selected. It consisted of Nanci O’Reilly, Beth Milofsky, Anna-Rose Charleton, Eleanor White, Kate Lenehan, Niamh Doody, Audrey Sheils, Ms. Ivory, Mr. Redmond and Mr. Mustafov and myself.

Working on the editorial team this year gave us more of an insight into the school and we met lots of new people. Nanci and Beth were in charge of desktop publishing. Beth was also staff writer. Audrey and Nanci wrote about academic achieve-ments throughout the college, while Eleanor and Anna-Rose were selected to write for the Arts section. Kate and Niamh were sports writers.

Not only did we assign people to write articles, we had Niamh Doody, the school’s photographer, at almost every event taking snap shots to document the school year. We had vibrant meetings in which everyone contributed and worked very well as a team.

the College’s Annual. We learnt all about modern printing and we now know how the yearbook comes from just piles of articles to a professionally bound book.

I thoroughly enjoyed every moment on the yearbook team, and found it a great honour to be involved with such an important feature in the school life.

This wouldn’t have happened without the help of Ms. Ivory, Mr. Redmond and Mr. Mustafov who guided us every step of the way, thank you so much!

INCOMING PREFECTSThis year all sixteen of us new prefects were welcomed into our new roles by the outgoing prefects from 6th year. It is an honour and privilege which none us take lightly and we all feel ready to represent our classmates during the next academic year of 2010/2011.

The ceremony to receive our badges and ribbons was a special occasion for all of us. We spent the last few weeks of school gaining an insight into the role of a prefect and how to go about our jobs within the school community.

If ever a student feels they need support or guidance, any of the prefects would be always willing to help in any way they can. I think all the new prefects would like to show their gratitude and appreciation to our year, who have been so supportive to us all. Although being a prefect is an hon-our I think the true measure of our success will be how we represent and involve our year and create unity within the student body.

Marian Healy – This is your life

On December 18th, 2009 the whole school gathered in the concourse to pay tribute to Mrs Healy as she begins her retirement as Principal of Alexandra College. Mrs Healy has been with us since 2002 – a mere 7 years ago – and in that time has overseen many changes in the College. Today we wish to acknowledge these achievements and to look at the contribution which she has made to the life of the College.

On her arrival, Mrs Healy looked at all aspects of the College and brought a fresh vision to bring us up to the 21st century. She had a vision to make Alexandra College a wonderful place for our stu-dents, to be a centre of learning where the students grow with us and cherish each other.

Mrs. Healy quickly embraced the values expressed in our Mission statement:

To learn to think independentlyTo tolerate and value diversity

To respect ourselves and each otherTo be responsible for ourselves and to society.

I would like to begin with the tangible aspects of Mrs. Healy’s leadership:The Development Plan was launched in 2003-4 – its aim to expand and improve the current facilities in Milltown. In Sept 2006 the fundraising campaign began

the College. Her own unique personality and sense of style have characterised Mrs. Healy’s leadership as our principal.

This is a less tangible area of Mrs Healy’s impact on the life of the Alexandra College community. Since her arrival, she has embraced the concept of our school crest and on all possible occasions she explains its

promoted with equal verve and enthusiasm. At the heart of all that she has done, she has always focused on the welfare of the students. We have already looked at sports and academic areas, now to music and the arts.

When amongst her friends on the staff at staff social events Mrs. Healy could burst into song –

I hope that Santa Claus is listening!! Another favourite is “Can’t help loving that man of mine” – often dedicated to her husband. She is the life and soul of many party occasions and has had enough energy to continue on clubbing with the teachers after some of us have gone home to bed!

Whether it is academic or frivolous – all activities were undertaken wholeheartedly. You

could turn all sorts of occasions into fun activities. We never knew when we would be ambushed by a snatch of song or spontaneous laughter as you responded to circumstances. Will we ever forget the green hair and patriotic costume that you wore for St. Patrick’s Day? You were a willing participant in staff-student debates in aid of various charities, . You even stayed up all night to supervise a sleepover by the 6th years having promised them that it would take place. Your assistant that night unashamedly admits that she fell sound asleep in her

students in the early hours of the morning.

The Alexandra College Club for Soldiers’ and Sailors’ RelationsThe Alexandra College Club for Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Relations was opened in December 1914, of which Mrs Starkey was the Honorable Secretary. They did so much work during the winters of 1914, 1915

and 1916 to help the men on active service and those who were pris-oners of the Germans. They got together to knit clothes and to pool

meager resources to send on packages.
