The African Veld The African veld is an elevated grassy plane. There are Umbrella trees, very tall grasses and flowers that are hidden under the huge bushes. There are loins, rhinoceroses, giraffes and elephants going about there business. This presentation will give some brief information about a few of the possible animals that can be found on the veld. It will give some facts about the more unsavoury side of life on the veld (depending on your view).

The African VeldThe African veld is an elevated grassy plane. There are Umbrella trees, very tall grasses and flowers that are hidden under the huge bushes. There are loins, rhinoceroses, giraffes and elephants going about there business.

This presentation will give some brief information about a few of the possible animals that can be found on the veld. It will give some facts about the more unsavoury side of life on the veld (depending on your view).

Lion (Panthera Leo)

• Lions are the second largest big cat after the Tiger. The average weight for a male is 180kg and 130kg for females.

• Lion can reach speeds of 81km/h (50mph) over short distances.

• Lions live in social groups, unlike most other cats. Females do most of the hunting for the pride(name given to the group).

Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius)

• Hippopotamus means river horse• They spend most of there time in

water, which keeps there temperature down

• Surprisingly they are related to whales and dolphins

• They may look cumbersome but can run faster than humans

Wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus)

• Wildebeasts are a large type of antelope that live together in large herds

• They migrate large distances (between 800 and 1600 km) every year looking for fresh water and food

• There predators are lions, cheetah, hunting dogs and hyena

• Game hunting is where humans hunt animals typically larger ones legally

• Animals such as lions, wild elephants, zebras, giraffes, cheetahs and leopards are over hunted

• People will pay for the kill of game and often take a photo to boast

• Animal poaching is where animals are killed illegally

• For example elephants are killed for their tusks; tigers for their bones and rhinos for their horns

• If current poaching rates are kept up then animals such as elephants, rhinos and other African wildlife will become extinct within our lifetime.
