PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
At LSPA’s Annual Meeting 2011, after being installed to the office of President, I described my vision of LSPA as:
A resource of information and assistance to Louisiana paralegals; A network of colleagues; A mentor to those entering the profession; A source of continuing legal education for paralegals; A sponsor of paralegal certification in Louisiana; and A supporter of national paralegal certification.
I think that LSPA has achieved and continues to achieve those goals. This past year: We transferred our bank accounts from MidSouth Bank to Iberia Bank with greater security including dual signature checks; We’ve been good stewards of the property and funds of LSPA through careful attention to the budget and contributions of members and we’ve increased our scholarship fund to more than $1,000; We have had four awesome issues of The Advocate prepared by our newsletter editor, Rhonda McManus; We had four quarterly Board Meetings – two in Lafayette, one in Alexandria and one in Baton Rouge; Our website continually improves and changes and is a two-way means of communication by LSPA to others and from others to LSPA. Hardly a week goes by that I don’t get one or more inquiries from
The Advocate Nov/Dec 2012 http://www.la-paralegals.org Page 3
non-members regarding membership, education, entry into the profession, continuing legal education and job availability; We had the Spring Gumbo Seminar at the Paragon Casino and Resort Hotel in Marksville on March 30, 2012 and presented the Rochelle Scholarship to Marina Rubin; Our fall seminar on Medical Malpractice was held September 21, 2012; We presented the LCP Review Course on August 10 and 11, 2012 hosted by chairperson Deborah Fontenot at her office in Lafayette and at which several LSPA members presented sections—Jimmie Murvin, Deborah Fontenot, Bob Jullens, Rebecca Maum; The LCP exam continues to be administered twice yearly providing a career path for experienced paralegals; I represented LSPA in June at the meeting of the ABA Standing Committee on Paralegals in New Orleans and opened dialog with the President of the New Orleans Paralegal Association; We’ve continued to sell our “Paralegals are always Swamped” t-shirts as well as the LCP Review Course Study Guide; We obtained the Paralegal Week Proclamation from Governor Jindal; We were represented at the NALA Annual Meeting by our NALA Liaison, Deborah Fontenot and LSPA has also had national exposure through the Paralegal Strategies weekly ezine by Vicki Voisin aka The Paralegal Mentor including profiles of Debbie Fontenot and myself, and reprint of one of Bob Jullens’ articles which led to a reprint in the newsletter of the National Capital Paralegal Association; At the Membership Mixer and Awards Reception held during our Annual Conference 2012, we announced our Outstanding Paralegal of the Year, Deborah Fontenot, CP. None of this would be possible without the dedicated officers and committee chairpersons of 2011-12. (For a list of those officers and committee chairperson, please see separate article “2012 Annual Conference” elsewhere in this issue of The Advocate.) I would like to recognize and thank Rebecca Maum for her years of service to LSPA. This past year, she served her second consecutive year as Treasurer, as well as serving as CLE Chairperson, obtaining the Paralegal Week Proclamation, and contributing in many other ways. Rebecca previously served two terms as LSPA President (2005-06 and 2008-09), Vice President and other offices and committees. Thank you Rebecca! LSPA has been serving Louisiana Paralegals for 27 years and will continue to serve Louisiana paralegals into the future! If you have a suggestion, comment or question, please call me at 337-232-9700 or email me at [email protected]. LSPA is here for you!

2012 Outstanding Paralegal of the Year
Deborah P. “Debbie” Fontenot, CP
On the evening of September 21, 2012 shortly after the conclusion of our seminar, LSPA held an Awards Reception and Membership Mixer. Deborah P. “Debbie” Fontenot, CP, of Lafayette, Louisiana was named recipient of LSPA’s Outstanding Paralegal of the Year for 2012.
Debbie spent the first six years of her legal career as a legal secretary and quickly advanced to paralegal-level work. She then went to work as a Land Assistant in an oil company, preparing contracts and leases. She spent 20 years with her next employer, a law firm with offices in Lafayette, Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Houston. She worked with multiple attorneys preparing corporate documents, acquisition and financing documents, UCC filings, litigation and research, and corporate merger and divestiture transactions.
Her next position was Corporate Paralegal and Contract Coordinator for Leed Petroleum Company. She prepared various contracts including Confidentiality Agreements, Consultancy Agreements, Master Service Agreements, Master Time Charter Agreements, negotiated over 350 agreements with vendors and coordinated trademark applications. She assumed additional responsibilities such as serving as liaison with the international board of directors of Leed which was publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange. She prepared notices, agenda and proposed resolutions for the company’s board meetings, and took and prepared minutes of the board meetings for the various corporate entities. When Leed Petroleum closed its doors, she quickly found another position. Her experience and skills led to her current position as manager of the Lafayette office of Red Mountain Resources. She prepares and negotiates Master Service Agreements with vendors in multiple states in which the company does business, maintains insurance records, and handles corporate filings. She liaisons with other administrators of the company in multiple locations.
The Advocate Nov/Dec 2012 http://www.la-paralegals.org Page 5
She became a Certified Paralegal (CP), in 1995 and has maintained that credential through continuing legal education. She was on the By-Law Committee of the Krewe of Oberon in the mid-1990s. She was a leader of Girl Scout Troop 49 from 1996-2004 and chaperoned Girl Scouts, including her own daughter, on trips to Washington, D.C. and Chicago. For most of the past 10 years, she has held an office in the Lafayette Paralegal Association including a previous and current term as President. She completely created the current website of LSPA and has maintained it for the past 2 years. Debbie has served as NALA Liaison since 2011 and represented LSPA at this summer’s NALA Annual Meeting. She chaired the LCP Review Committee in August of this year, including presenting two of the sections. Here are some excerpts from the letters of colleagues and attorneys written in support of her nomination.
“she willingly shares her expertise and her leadership skills with others” “a trailblazer as a paralegal” “endless energy and enthusiasm” “never one to shy from a new challenge” “Strong family woman”
One of her supervising attorneys wrote “under my supervision, she rose to new challenges working at a pace, intensity and skill level above that of many lawyers with significant training and experience” “Many people in life just do what they need to do to get by; others are always striving to improve, to climb a new mountain, to seek out the next great accomplishment.” “I am proud of her for being such an innovator and aiming so high with the realization that there are so many ways as a paralegal that she can use her knowledge, collaborative skills and leadership skills.”
Congratulations, Debbie Fontenot, CP, on being named 2012 LSPA Outstanding Paralegal of the Year!

IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR!
No, I’m not referring to time to count your blessings, purchase Christmas gifts for your loved ones, or go to holiday parties. Well, it is that time! It is also time to renew your membership for the 2012-2013 year! If you have already renewed, thank you! Our membership year for 2012-13 started on October 1, 2012. At our Annual Membership Meeting on September 22, 2012, a dues increase in the amount of $10 per membership classification was approved. If you renewed prior to the Annual Meeting, you do not owe the new dues amount for the 2012-13 year. A certification scholarship for members only is being created, to be funded by $5 of the dues increase as well as by donations. Renew your membership to support this new scholarship as well as all of the benefits of membership in LSPA – The Association for Louisiana Paralegals! If you do not renew your membership for 2012 – 13, this will be the last issue of The Advocate you will receive. Your Board of Directors works hard to fill each issue with information you need to know. Don’t forget about the Members Only section of LSPA’s website www.la-paralegals.org! By the time you receive this issue of The Advocate, the login information will have been changed. Once you renew your membership, contact President Jessie at jandlcormier@ earthlink.net for the new login. If you have any questions regarding your membership, please contact me at [email protected] or 337-254-1363. Please mail your renewal application and dues to me (see below).

LSPA SCHOLARSHIPS
By: Deborah P. Fontenot, CP Member, Scholarship Committee
SCHOLARSHIPS? With an “S”? YES!!!
In addition to the Rochelle Scholarship which LSPA has made available for paralegal students since the 1989 – 1990 fiscal year, LSPA will now offer a scholarship JUST FOR MEMBERS. The Board unanimously voted to name the new scholarship after a founding member that has contributed so much of her time and energy to LSPA and to the continuing goal of educating paralegals. We are proud to announce the new Jimmie Murvin Certification Scholarship. Jimmie Murvin Certification Scholarship: At the annual meeting held in September, 2012, the LSPA dues were increased for the first time in LSPA history. As we know, costs are rising for everything. In addition to allowing a little extra for our annual budget and expenses, the board voted that a portion of the $10.00 increase in dues be allocated to a new scholarship to be established exclusively for LSPA members. LSPA encourages its members to obtain certification through NALA and as a Louisiana Certified Paralegal, through LSPA. We also realize that the cost of certification can keep some members from being able to pursue their goal of obtaining certification. The Board decided that LSPA needed to adopt a program to help its members with the cost of certification. This year, the LSPA Scholarship Committee is challenged with the responsibility to establish criteria and guidelines for the new JIMMIE MURVIN CERTIFICATION SCHOLARSHIP. We are hoping to award the first Scholarship at the Annual Meeting to be held in 2013. Watch for more information in future issues of The Advocate.
The Advocate Nov/Dec 2012 http://www.la-paralegals.org Page 11
Rochelle Scholarship: During the LSPA 1989-1990 fiscal year the Rochelle Scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to paralegal students. This scholarship was named in honor of Carol Rochelle, a founding member of LSPA and an advocate of the advancement of paralegal education, who was killed in an automobile accident on her way home from a meeting of the advisory committee prior to the first annual meeting of LSPA. To qualify, applicants for the Rochelle Scholarship must:
be currently enrolled in an institutionally accredited paralegal program in Louisiana which offers a curriculum of at least sixty (60) semester hours.
have an overall grade point average of at least a 3.0, and must be enrolled in a minimum of six hours of paralegal studies.
be planning on a future career as a paralegal. There is a $5.00 application fee. The application and supporting documentation must be returned by January 31, 2013. It is not necessary for applicants to be members of LSPA. The Rochelle Scholarship is a cash award of up to $500. Additionally, the recipient receives free LSPA membership and tuition to all LSPA seminars for one year. The Rochelle Scholarship will be awarded at the LSPA Spring Seminar to be held in Baton Rouge during March 2013. To obtain the LSPA Rochelle Scholarship Application package, paralegal students may contact President Jessie Cormier by phone at 337-232-9700 or by email at jandlcormier@ earthlink.net. Scholarship Committee: If you are interested in assisting LSPA in establishing the guidelines for the new Jimmie Murvin Certification Scholarship and/or assist with the Rochelle Scholarship, please contact LSPA President, Jessie Cormier, at jandlcormier@ earthlink.net and let her know you would like to serve on the Scholarship Committee.

ETHICS TALK
By Jimmie W. Murvin, ACP, LCP, LSPA Past President & Charter Member
The question of how, when, and why lawyers and law firms use social media for professional
reasons has, over the past few years, moved into the realm of legal ethics. Many law firms use social
media for advertising – or is it advertising to send your “friends” an account of how you won your last
jury trial? And what about client confidentiality? Has that been breached by the lawyer through this
posting, if it’s only in the private area of the lawyer’s Facebook page?
If someone from California “friends” a paralegal in Louisiana and casually asks for information
about the statute of limitations period (common-law speak for “prescription”) on medical malpractice
claims in Louisiana, would the paralegal be practicing law by giving that information? The answer to
that question is an unqualified “yes,” but now substitute “lawyer” in place of “paralegal” and ask the
question again.
Is it appropriate for lawyers and judges to “friend” each other on Facebook and exchange
messages with each other when the judge is hearing a case in which the lawyer is involved? Should a
lawyer express an opinion in a blog or on a website about a judge before whom the lawyer has
appeared or about other lawyers?
Social media provide realms of information about the people who use them, most of which is
posted by the person him/herself. Is it “kosher” for lawyers to use the information found on YouTube,
Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media sites against someone in a legal matter? Is
information found in social media discoverable, and if so, how does that impact on one’s responsibility
to preserve, and not destroy, that information?
I keep asking these questions, and I’m sure you expect that eventually I’ll get around to
answering them in this article. Not so. But if you are truly interested in this subject, I hope you’ll attend
LSPA’s Mid-Year Seminar, which is being held this year on March 15, 2013 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in
Baton Rouge. We will talk about the tension between lawyers’ and paralegals’ responsibility to comply
with legal ethics and their desire and need to use social media for various purposes. See you on March
15th!

LSPA 2012 Annual Conference
LSPA’s 2012 Annual Conference was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lafayette, Louisiana on
September 21 – 22, 2012. Our seminar, Medical Malpractice: A Prescription for Prosecuting and
Defending the Medical Malpractice Case, on September 21, 2012 was outstanding! We had excellent

given out. Awards Chairperson, Debbie Billiot, presented President Jessie Cormier with a beautiful
plaque commemorating her term as president. Rebecca Maum, Treasurer, presented the Paralegal Week

The Proposed By-Law Amendments, which had been previously distributed to all members,
were presented to the membership by Parliamentarian Camille Moran, CP. All were approved by the
membership. The most significant change is the elimination of the offices of District Directors. The
president then initiated a discussion regarding the proposed dues increase of ten dollars per classification
effective beginning with the 2012-13 fiscal year, which had been previously approved by the Board.
Associated with the dues increase was the recommendation of the Board of Directors that five dollars of
the dues increase be dedicated to a certification scholarship for members. Following a motion and
discussion, the dues increase and certification scholarship were approved by a vote of the membership.
Election of Officers was the next item of business on the agenda. The new slate of officers for

Karen McKnight, CP (LSPA President 1992-93) installed the new and re-elected officers. The
meeting concluded with an address by President Jessie Cormier, CP, LCP in which she discussed the
accomplishments of the past year and the goals for the coming year. (Please read the President’s
Message in this issue of The Advocate.)
The final event of LSPA’s Annual Conference was the Transitional Board Meeting, where new
officers and committee chairpersons were welcomed with a brief orientation and announcements by
President Cormier.
LSPA is off and running into the 2012-13 year!

Highlights of
LSPA 27th Annual Membership Meeting
By: Sandy Pourciaux, ACP
If you didn’t get a chance to attend the Louisiana State Paralegal Membership
Meeting which was held on September 22nd at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lafayette, then
we missed you! If you were able to attend, then a big THANK YOU for joining us. Jessie
Cormier, CP, LCP was elected to serve as President for a second term. She did such a
great job for LSPA 2011-12, and we thank her for her continued service and dedication
to our profession! Our special lady, Debbie Billiot, also was re-elected to serve as Vice
President for a second term. Thanks to Debbie for her continued support and service to
LSPA and to the office of Vice President. We elected Amy Collins-Gutter from Baton
Rouge to serve as the new Secretary for the association. She has been serving for a little
over two months and has already shown such inspiration and dedication to LSPA. We
can’t thank her enough. Deborah Fontenot, CP, was re-elected to a second term in the
office of NALA Liaison. She represented our association well at NALA’s Annual
Conference in July. As for me, I was elected to serve as your Treasurer and I am taking
my duties head on assisting the board with setting budgets and goals. I wish to thank
our outgoing Treasurer, Rebecca B. Maum, for her tireless efforts in handling LSPA’s
financial affairs. Here’s a toast to you Rebecca!
Our Annual Meeting also brought about a new change. The Membership voted to
slightly increase the dues for LSPA. The Membership Application reflects the increase
to $50 over previous years’ membership dues of $40. A portion of the increase shall be
dedicated to a NEW scholarship account for Members only. A planning committee will
be in full swing in the next few months to begin funding the account and to set out the
guidelines for the Jimmie Murvin Certification Scholarship Award. YES, the JMCS (I like
acronyms), so rightfully named for all of Ms. Murvin’s efforts and dedication to the
education of paralegals. Without her and countless other paralegals that started LSPA
twenty-seven years ago, this award and your association would not be possible. Your
renewal of membership in LSPA will go far in helping you and others get those well
The Advocate Nov/Dec 2012 http://www.la-paralegals.org Page 19
deserved credentials for your profession. Start thinking about applying for yourself or
another worthy paralegal that you’d like to see awarded the first scholarship of its kind
for LSPA. Don’t forget to renew your membership so you don’t miss out on this new and
exciting scholarship dedicated to just LSPA members. Be on the lookout for future
editions of The Advocate for the details! Incidentally, our Rochelle Scholarship is still
going strong for student members and the Board will be working on encouraging
paralegal students to apply.
Another item voted on during the meeting was the elimination of District
Directors. With the advent of social media, e-mail, and local paralegal organizations, the
board determined that there was not a great need for the appointment of District
Directors to serve LSPA, so the membership voted to remove the by-law requirements
for them. We do thank all of our past DD’s for their faithful service to LSPA and for
laying the groundwork for fellowship and spreading the word about our great
organization and profession.
We’ve got some new ideas brewing for LSPA, but I’ll save those surprises for
another edition of The Advocate. I’ll sign off for now. Let’s keep in touch.

INTEGRATING MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 2010
WITH SOCIAL MEDIA
By Bob Jullens, CP, LCP
Social media has become a way of life for most of us. Between Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter,
most of us share more than we should about our personal and professional lives with the rest of the
world. Wouldn’t it be convenient if you could seamlessly integrate your social media world straight
from your Outlook inbox? You can integrate Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter directly into your
Outlook and even view your Google calendar. It requires downloading a simple plug-in for each. Here’s
how to do just that.
INTEGRATING FACEBOOK WITH OUTLOOK
To integrate Facebook, download the Microsoft Social Connector plugin from the Microsoft
website at http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5039
Once downloaded and installed, open Outlook and go to “View” tab and then the People Pane. Under
the People Pane, go to account settings and enter your
Facebook username and password. Now, in your inbox, at the
bottom of the reading pane, there will be another window.
When you open an email from an email address with a
Facebook account associated with it, the profile picture will be
displayed in your pane. There will be six different tabs:
These tabs have the following functions:
Shows email, meetings and other data about that person
Shows the person’s news feeds
Shows your emails with that person
Shows attachments received from that person
Shows meetings you have with that person
Shows status updates submitted by that person
The Advocate Nov/Dec 2012 http://www.la-paralegals.org Page 21
INTEGRATE LINKEDIN WITH OUTLOOK
Much like the Facebook plug in, LinkedIn can be integrated in the same pane with your
Facebook plug in. Browse to http://www.linkedin.com/static?key=microsoft_outlook and download the
plug in. Click on “Run”. Click next and then click agree to agree to the terms of use. Click install and
then OK to place it in your program files directory. Click ok to install. A window will come up asking
whether you want to run or save the file. Click “Run” and then finish. Once downloaded and installed,
open Outlook and go to “View” tab and then the People Pane. Under the people Pane, go to account
settings, check the LinkedIn box and enter your LinkedIn username and password.
INTEGRATE TWITTER WITH OUTLOOK
To integrate Twitter, go to http://www.techhit.com/TwInbox/twitter_plugin_outlook.html and
download the plug in named “twinbox”.
Click on “run”. Click next. Accept the terms of use and click next. Click install and then finish.
Unlike Facebook and LinkedIn, Twitter integrates itself at the top of outlook by adding a toolbar.
Once you finish installing the Twitter plug in, a quick guide will open up to walk you through
setting up your account.
SYNC YOUR GOOGLE AND OUTLOOK CALENDARS
Using a simple program download, you can sync your Outlook calendar with your Google
calendar. To sync your calendars, browse to
http://dl.google.com/dl/googlecalendarsync/googlecalendarssync installer.exe.
Download the program by clicking on it and electing “save as”. Click OK and the program will
install. Follow the install instructions. Once installed, you will have the opportunity to decide the type
of sync you want. The sync can be set to go one way or two way. In other words, you can decide
The Advocate Nov/Dec 2012 http://www.la-paralegals.org Page 22
whether you want to limit the calendars to only sync changes made in Outlook to the Google calendar,
or vice versa, or have the calendar sync any changes made on one, to the other. For instance, you may
use Outlook as your professional calendar and Google as your personal calendar. In that case, you may
want any professional appointments on your Outlook calendar to appear on your personal calendar, but
may not want all of your friends’ birthdays, anniversaries, utility bill due dates etc., to show on your
professional calendar, especially if you share your calendar with co-workers.
VIEW YOUR GOOGLE CALENDAR WITH OUTLOOK
If you want to be able to view your Google calendar within Outlook, log into your Google
calendar and click on the calendar you want to integrate. Then, click the iCAL button under the private
address tab, unless your calendar is public, then use the public link. A window will open
displaying your calendar’s address. Copy this address.
Next, in Outlook, go to your calendar. Under Open Calendar, click the drop down arrow and go
to “from Internet”. Now paste the address into the window. Then, verify that you want to add the
calendar and you are finished.

Fall 2012 Board Meeting
By Amy Collins-Gutter, Secretary, and Jessie Cormier, CP, LCP, President
The first Board Meeting of the year was held on October 27, 2012 at the offices of
Losavio & Dejean in Baton Rouge, hosted by Amy Collins-Gutter, Secretary. We jumped
right in to the business at hand! LSPA’s Spring seminar will be held on March 15, 2013
at the Crowne Plaza Baton Rouge with the theme of “Women and the Law”.
Chairperson Tiffany Thomas is lining up speakers and it promises to be an interesting
seminar.
During discussion of the new certification scholarship for members, it was
proposed that we honor Jimmie Murvin, ACP, LCP by naming it after her! Not only was
she a founding member and LSPA’s first President, Jimmie has continued to support and
serve in LSPA and she has taught many current and future paralegals at LSU. (See
separate article “Scholarships” in this issue of The Advocate.) It was decided that we
would make an announcement and presentation to Jimmie at the Women and the Law
seminar, issue a press release and publicize the event as much as possible!
A new member, Pamela Turner, was present (all members are invited to attend
LSPA’s Board Meetings). During the course of the meeting, she agreed to chair the LCP
Review Course Committee! Welcome aboard, Pam!
It was a crisp, cool fall day, so we recessed for lunch at a nearby Cajun restaurant,
Boutin’s. We all got to know each other a little better and shared our thoughts about
LSPA. The next Board Meeting will be held at Deborah Fontenot’s office in Lafayette on
January 26, 2013. See you then!

Legal Assistants of Northeast Louisiana By Rhonda K. McManus, 2012 LANEL President
LANEL invites all legal assistants and paralegals in Northeast Louisiana to attend
its monthly luncheons, held on the second Wednesday of each month, providing guest
speakers on topics of interest to legal assistants and paralegals.
The LANEL September Luncheon was held at Restaurant Sage. Members and
guests enjoyed the presentation of Mr. David Sorrell, Scout Executive & CEO of the
Louisiana Purchase Council of Boy Scouts. In October, the LANEL Luncheon was held
at Chef Pat Nolan’s “Catering At Its Best”. Attendees enjoyed guest speaker, Ms. Louise
Bond, newly elected Clerk of Court, serving the 4th
JDC in Ouachita Parish. The
November Luncheon was held at Chef Pat Nolan’s “Catering At Its Best”. Guest
Speaker, Ms. Stuart Scalia, presented information about the upcoming holiday festivities
of Downtown Monroe and Renaissance of the area. Each December, LANEL Members
celebrate the holiday season at its Annual Christmas Party for members only. New
officers are elected for the coming term.
Through the years, LANEL members and guests have given pocket change
donations at each monthly meeting as a way of giving back to the local community in the
form of an annual donation to a local charity organization, which provides assistance in
Northeast Louisiana. LANEL matches the total amount of donations by its year-end.
During October, LANEL members submit information about their favorite local charity
organizations. At its November Luncheon, LANEL members vote on the recipient of the
LANEL 2012 Annual Charity Donation. A representative of the local charity
organization will be invited to attend the January Luncheon to receive the LANEL 2012
Annual Charity Donation.
On behalf of our LANEL Membership, we wish LSPA, you and your families
across the state:
Merry & Blessed Christmas and a Happy & Prosperous New Year!

5 Steps to Creating an Impressive LinkedIn Profile
By Vicki Voisin, ACP
Social media is an important tool for growing your career. Facebook and Twitter get a lot of attention. However, LinkedIn is a powerful tool for forming new connections and, perhaps finding new employment. LinkedIn as the more professional version of Facebook. On LinkedIn you can post links and status updates, join groups, and “link up” with key players in your profession. It is also useful for networking. Setting up a LinkedIn account is simple. Once it is done you need to work on your profile and that can be tedious. Instead of rushing to complete it all at one time, I suggest you work on one part at a time – perhaps 15 minutes a day until it is finished. Then you have to keep it updated -- more about that in No. 5 below. Here are five simple steps to craft a LinkedIn profile that may be your secret to career success: 1. Do not skimp on details. If you have only a basic profile or (worse yet), one without a picture, you appear to be only a half-hearted user of LinkedIn. Be sure to complete each section and use specific numbers you can to quantify your accomplishments. (Example: First Chair of the Paralegal/Legal Assistant Section of the State Bar of Michigan.) If you want to change the order of your profile sections, just drag and drop the section as you are editing your profile. For instance, if you are a recent graduate of a paralegal program, you will want to highlight your educational experience. If you have been in the profession for several years, you will want to feature your skills at the top of your profile 2. Be sure there are no typos. Your typographical errors may be overlooked on more casual platforms like Facebook and Twitter. With LinkedIn, you will want to put your best professional foot forward. Use the spell check function and, if possible, have someone else check your profile for errors. The key to success on LinkedIn is being likable and professional at the same time. Save the celebrity gossip and LOL’s for Facebook. 3. Utilize the skills section. Many LinkedIn users are not familiar with the skills section. However, people wanting to hire professionals with a certain skill set use this feature to find the right person instead of posting an ad. For instance, if a law firm needs a litigation paralegal with experience using Trial Director, he or she can go to www.linkedin.com/skills and sort through profiles where Trial Director is listed as a skill instead of doing a more general search. Add your skills at www.linkedin.com/skills so prospects can find you easily.
The Advocate Nov/Dec 2012 http://www.la-paralegals.org Page 32
4. Endorsements and recommendations. Endorsements are a fairly new feature on LinkedIn. People can easily endorse your skills and expertise with only a few clicks. Often if you endorse someone and they know you, they will reciprocate. Endorsements and recommendations are not the same. Recommendations are more detailed than endorsements. These normally include a few sentences about why your colleague or vendor enjoyed working with you. A few genuine, well-written recommendations can really help build trust and provide proof for people who are considering hiring you. Speed up the recommendation process by recommending a few of your connections. These should only be people you highly recommend. LinkedIn has a feature where you can request recommendations from connections. 5. Update frequently. Now for the hard-to-get-to part. Once your profile is created, be sure to keep it up to date by posting new career milestones, any awards you receive, offices you are elected to, etc. Your status update can also include links to relevant articles or news about your employer. Set aside time once each week (at least once each month!) to review your profile and make appropriate updates. My request to you: To keep your career moving forward, it is very important to be active on LinkedIn. This includes keeping your profile up to date, getting recommendations, and making frequent updates. Implement LinkedIn to make new connections and strengthen relationships with existing connections. LinkedIn can also be a tool for looking for a job OR for someone looking for a new-hire with your particular skills! Do you use LinkedIn as a tool for your career success? If we are not already connected, please add me to your list! ~~~~~~~~~~ © 2012 Vicki Voisin, Inc.
