Open Morning

come and meet our girls

Every year in and around Hungerford there are manyincidents of poaching of trout from our rivers. Most years with the help of the local police and the Environment Agency

Fishery Officers there are convictions and fines imposed on the poachers in the courts.

Poaching is an ancient pasttime but animals, birds and fish can be cruelly left injured and dying by the illegal acts of poachers.

This week after reports of illegal fishing a small party of poachers were apprehended while fishing with hand lines using bread as bait during the early evening. The poachers were actually fishing when apprehended and those with lines let the lines drop into the water and trout swam away with hook and the hand line attached.

While the incident was being addressed by the police a baited hand line was seized by a duck and hooked, it flew off with the hook and line in its bill. Neither fish nor duck could be traced to remove the hook and line form their mouths.

Fishing is a great recreational pastime but no one can fish without first holding an Environment Agency Permit, and a Club Ticket with adherence to the rules for the river, canal or lake. If fish are landed without relevant permits, it is considered theft, and where it takes place on private land it is considered trespassing and a criminal offence.

Offenders will be accordingly prosecuted and these days face considerable fines.

- ROBERT JAMES

This October sees the return of national Cancer Awareness Month which is a collaboration of national public service organizations, professional medical associations and government agencies

working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to services. At the forefront of this campaign is the Pink Ribbon Foundation Charity Number 1080839.

Each year 47,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. That is more than five women every hour and sadly the disease claims the lives of around 12,000 women each year. The number of women being diagnosed with breast cancer is rising but, the good news is that with your help, more women are surviving the disease than ever before.

The Pink Ribbon Foundation is a grant making trust with a mission to fund projects and provide financial support to UK charities which relieve the needs of people who are suffering from, or who have been affected by breast cancer or who work to advance the understanding of breast cancer, its early detection and treatment. There are a large number of such charities in the UK, each as deserving as the next. Many of the charities supported are the smaller ones, which operate on a shoestring.

The Pink Ribbon Foundation has very little infrastructure. It relies on the hard work freely given by Trustees (who don’t even claim expenses), interested parties and its Patrons. This is done in order to maximize the amount going to the charities that benefit from the funds raised.

Almost two-thirds of women diagnosed with breast cancer today now survive their disease beyond 20 years and your help contributes to this incredible progress.

Newbury Building Society are proud to be donating £5 to the Pink Ribbon Foundation for each open Pink Ribbon Saver Account at 15 November 2012. The account is available in our Hungerford Branch from the 24th of September 2012. Terms & Conditions apply. For further details visit www.newbury.co.uk/savings or call 01635 555777.

Kingfishers, water voles, grass snakes and lots of creepy crawlies, these are some of the creatures you might be lucky enough to see if you join Action

for the River Kennet and celebrate World Rivers Day at the boardwalk, part of Stonebridge Wild River Reserve in Marlborough on Sunday 30th September from 10am.

This third Meadow Day will include two wildlife walks (10.30am and 2pm) and a chance to put on your wellies and explore the Kennet to see and learn about all the wildlife that depends upon it. There will also be a Kennet Quiz, children’s nature trail and the opportunity to find out more about ARK and get involved.

The day will end with a bat walk by the river at 8pm. For more info contact Anna on 01672 511028.

FOR GAS SERVICE CALL01793 848800

142573

We are always thinking ahead at Gastech and we know that, traditionally, the level of heating breakdowns drastically increase at the end of September.

Many of the breakdowns we attend to at the start of the heating season could have been prevented by maintenance.

Unfortunately, faults on the heating system do not show themselves until the cold weather arrives. By then, most gas engineers are busy, causing a delay of days to arrange a call out.

Gastech are a local, family run business with more than 30 years’ experience in the gas industry. Based in Royal Wootton Bassett with a satellite offi ce in Marlborough we always have an engineer available in your area.

With increasing gas prices it is essential that your gas boiler is running properly to ensure it is safe and effi cient. Our engineers are happy to service all gas and LPG boilers including warm air systems. Age of boiler is not a problem and we would be there to service it, not to tell you that it needs replacing.

So, beat the rush. Call Gastech on 01793 848800 to book your heating service.

Customers are telling us at the Seasoned Timber Company that they are being more conservative about running their central heating consistently. They are both heating the

house to a slightly lower temperature or running the heating for a few hours less each day and using a fi re to heat the main room comfortably. We are being told of a good reduction in fuel costs where customers turn to log burners as an alternative or additional source of heating.

There has been a great increase in the number of log burners being installed these require seasoned wood to work effi ciently. Seasoned hardwood logs are achieved by storing timber after felling for a minimum of one year and usually longer until the moisture content has reduced suffi ciently. Further storage in covered airy barns is preferable once converted to logs. Buying locally sourced logs that meet the moisture content requirements is one way of saving money and reducing our carbon footprint. Once you have your logs it’s important to protect them from the weather, it is also preferable to bring some in prior to burning during periods of damp and cold weather. Customers say that logs delivered in bulk bags is much more convenient and clean. The 1 cubic meter vented bag is recyclable and we encouraged its reuse or return. -Gill Rowlands Seasoned Timber Company Tel. 07917 875781.

Aldbourne Band is returning to Ramsbury Church at 7.30pm this Saturday 29th September, for a lively evening of varied and interesting music to round off this Jubilee

year. Music will include a bass trio playing Forty Fathoms, a solo by Paul Bilkey on Soprano cornet playing The Queen of the Nights Aria by Mozart. Festival Overture by Shostakovich will also be performed – a challenging piece! The Training Band (pictured) will also be performing in their third major public appearance. The Friends of Aldbourne Band are running a raffl e and Sue Rendell from Aldbourne post offi ce is running a bar.

In September the Band’s last performance was in Aldbourne by the Pond. It featured ‘Tom Jones’ aka Pete Grimshaw playing a medley of Jones’s classics whilst festooned with ladies’ panties hung around his neck and instrument – he got the loudest applause of the night for his efforts!

The annual Christmas concert in Aldbourne is scheduled for Saturday 8th December at 4pm.

Brendoncare, the local care charity for older people, has a few fi nal places available for the BUPA Great South Run on Sunday 28th

October. Join Brendoncare’s Lisa Fletcher, David Higgins and Angharad Foster along with 30,000 other runners, on this 10 mile race through Portsmouth and help raise £120 minimum sponsorship for Brendoncare.

To claim a place please contact Community Fundraiser Lisa Fletcher on 01962 852133 or email [email protected] . Places are limited so please don’t hesitate if you would like one. Lisa said: “I can’t wait to take on this challenge! I’ve never run before so I thought the Great South Run would be a great one to start off what I hope will become a regular hobby. It’s an opportunity to give something back to the community by raising money and awareness for Brendoncare – helping some of the most vulnerable people in our society through the Brendoncare care centres and clubs for older people. At a time when ‘care’ is getting a lot of bad press, I want to shout about a great charity whose levels of service and care are excellent.”

Hedgehog Hazards Some of the worst cases Wiltshire Wildlife Hospi-tal have been treating are those involving slug pel-let poisoning. They explained to the Adviser “The hedgehogs suffer terrible pain. People need to be aware that if they have hedgehogs in the garden there is no need to use slug pellets, even the ani-mal friendly ones, supposedly harmless, can effect hedgehogs in this way”.The Hospital tell us that this is a dangerous time for the offspring, as they may not gain enough weight to survive the winter months. Members of the pub-lic should be aware of the plight of the autumn juvenile. Hedgehogs already being cared for that are not up to weight, are the ones needing over-wintering and by the end of October the hedgehogs should weigh 650g to survive the winter. Advice can be misleading about weight, with 1lb (454g) sometimes being stated as suffi cient, but Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital believe this is nowhere near enough for any hedgehog to survive. Last year they over-wintered 130 hedgehogs and annually they deal with between 600 and 700 hedgehogs.Hedgehogs are now being seen regularly in Coo-pers Meadow in Marlborough. The meadow is a mixture of mown, managed and wild habitat and it is thought that leaving some of the wild patches has encouraged them to breed there. Wiltshire Wildlife Hospital are a registered charity and be contacted on 07850 778752

HUNGERFORD COACH PARK DISCUSSIONHungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee’s last meeting discussed a coach park in Charnham Street. The park would be at the current bus stop opposite The Sun Inn and would involve several extra parking spaces, the mayor, Cr Martin Crane said. The meeting also heard of a proposal for a coach park at Cobbs Farm and feeling was that if Cobbs wished to develop a coach park, they could consider it.

SIR JOHN MADEJSKI TO SWITCH ON LIGHTS?Sir John Madejski will be invited by Hungerford Town Council to switch on Hungerford’s Christmas lights on Sunday, December 2.“Mr Christmas Lights” Rod. Desmeules told the last Hungerford Town Council highways and transport com-mittee meeting he was ready to press ahead with the lights programme and would need volunteers to help. The meeting was told it was planned to offset costs with sales of Christmas cards, calendars and a prize draw.Hungerford’s Christmas lughts have been the envy of many centres in recent years, largely due to Mr Des-meules’ efforts.

STATION PRECINCTS PROGRESSDELAYEDTwo over-riding factors appear to be delaying progress of Hungerford’s railway station precincts development. These factors were again aired at the last meeting of Hungerford Town Council’s highways and transport committee.Firstly, the council needs a decision from Network Rail on the station boundaries and “ransom strip” alleged to be hindering progress.Secondly the council needs assurance that the rail ser-vice will be maintained when tenders for the service are sought next March. The meeting was told there was no guarantee that rail traffi c would continue to expand if the service was re-duced to a “shuttle service” from Newbury when elec-trifi cation of the line between Paddington and Newbury was implemented.A special council committee was to meet on Wednesday to discuss the rail service. Delegates from Hungerford, Kintbury and Bedwyn were mentioned but there was no mention of Marlborough from where there is under-stood to be concern from people who use Bedwyn and Hungerford railway stations in preference to Swindon.

“MORE POSITIVE HOUSING APPROACH”Hungerford Town Council was looking to a more positive approach to housing development within the town, the mayor Cr Martin Crane told the last council highways and transport committee meet-ing. He said there were areas within the town that could contain housing and moves were under way to appoint a professional consultant. He said over-all involvement in a local development plan would be too costly for the council.

POLICE HELP WITH DOG FOULINGPolice have agreed to accompany the dog warden on patrol in Hungerford where instances of dog fouling are rife. District Councillor David Holtby told councllors before their last meeting that fouling was particularly bad in the canal area and Croft .

MARLBOROUGH FUNDRAISING EVENING TO SUPPORT LOCAL LIFE SAVERS A charity dance at Marlborough Town Hall next month will raise funds for the local life saving work of St John Ambulance. The dance on 20 October, featuring the band Cel-ebration, is being organised by volunteers from the charity’s Pewsey Division and Marlborough Com-munity First Responders - volunteers who provide emergency medical aid in the Marlborough area ahead of the arrival of an ambulance. Organiser Kev Dickens says: ‘At last year’s dance everyone had a fantastic time while knowing they were helping us to provide a service which is so of-ten the difference between life and death.’ The money raised from this year’s event will go towards equipping the local community with basic fi rst aid skills as well as supporting the Community First Responders and local St John Ambulance vol-unteers. The event will also provide an opportunity for people to fi nd out more about learning fi rst aid and volunteering. Kev says: ‘Our research shows up to 140,000* peo-ple a year die needlessly in situations where fi rst aid could have saved them. We’re determined to change that appalling statistic by getting as many people as possible to learn fi rst aid.’ The evening starts at 8.30pm. Tickets are £10 for adults and £8 for concessions and will be available from the White Horse Bookshop and Carrie’s Hair-dressers in Marlborough High Street. Tickets can also be reserved at www.marlborough-boxoffi ce.co.uk
