Hungerford appears to be on the brink of an unprecedented era of development as Hungerford Town Council tackles future development plans with skill, patience and
determination. The town is in the frame for 400 to 500 new homes and
Hungerford Railway Station precincts are being looked upon for a major tourist hub and other development.
New town and neighbourhood plans are at advanced stages and Charnham business and industrial area is already a growing major employment zone with leading companies involved.
John O’Gaunt Community Technology College plans for development have been approved and will go ahead when funds are made available and the college is in position to take new students

as Hungerford’s housing content grows.
The town is one of the nation’s leading antiques centres and boasts The Hungerford Arcade, recently voted Britain’s Best Antiques Centre of 2012.

We were planning to recognise Harry Chapman Pincher’s 98th birthday with a picture and our own write-up. And then it occurred to us that no better person could
do the job than the man himself. Chapman Pincher is a man of many talents and an outstanding author. He is pictured on his 98th birthday with his charming wife Billie and constant four-legged companion Tom in the garden of their home in Kintbury. Picture by Chris Caswell. See page 4...

YOU’RE WISERIN
THE ADVISER
Adviser Index Advertisers with weekly advertisements for a year are welcome to an entry in the index.
64
Now in my 99th year – I was 98 on 29 March – I have recently been invited by a distinguished publisher to write my autobiography. Sketching it out, I have surprised myself by
the number of occupations in which I have earned my living. The fi rst money I earned was as an Actor on the professional stage, at the age of 13. My father was the Manager of the Theatre Royal in the north-east town of Darlington and, for six months of each year, my mother was an actress in the Repertory Company there. Occasionally there was a part for a boy, such as Sherlock Holmes assistant, and I played it, my fi rst wage for a three-night performance (twice nightly) being 7 shillings and sixpence.
When I was 17 my father took a country pub, three miles outside Darlington and, I helped, regularly, as Barman, a most valuable experience because it taught me how to converse, with ease, with men of all ages and all social ranks. As the beautiful River Tees fl owed past the pub door, I became an ardent, life-long Fisherman which would eventually earn me money by writing articles and books about it.
At 21, after securing an honours degree in botany and zoology, I was appointed Biologyman at the Liverpool Institute – a boys’ school. The pay was so poor – less than £5 per week – that I was driven to writing articles for magazines which gave me the writing bug which has become an obsession,
On joining the Forces as a Soldierman in 1940, I trained as a tank gunner, became a gunnery instructor and, after being commissioned, was selected for a crash course at the Military College of Science (now Royal) which I completed in spite of the horrifi c mathematics (never my strong point). I then became a Rocketman, being involved with developing rocket weapons for all three services.
In 1946, when released from the Army, I was invited to join the Daily Express, then a broadsheet with the world’s fi rst 4 million daily sale, as Defenceman and Scienceman. When, also taking on the reporting of medical advances, I became the Medicineman. Then, in 1950, with the conviction of the atomic scientist, Klaus Fuchs, for spying for Russia, I also became the Spyman, which, after my retirement from Fleet Street in 1979, has become my main interest and source of income through books and newspaper articles.
In retrospect, the trade description I would treasure most, and which embraces all the others, would be Workman. For nearly all my life I have been addicted to work, being quickly bored by repose and being intent to die in harness if I can. For me, seven days a week, there ain’t no fun like work, especially when, as in journalism, you can so quickly see the results of your labour. Floreat industria!

JACK WILLIAMS
NOTABLE HUNGERFORDCHARACTERS NO. 4.JOHN WEESLEY
MEMORIES OF HUNGERFORD & THE KENNET VALLEY
The great Hungerford Historian Norman Hidden devotes the fi nal
chapter of his remarkable book Aspects of Early Hungerford to details of that great non-
conformist preacher John Wesley.Wesley visited our town on 14 occasions between 1735
and 1790 and usually he was on his way to Bristol usually starting from London but on occasions via Basingstoke.
He either stopped for tea or to spend the night and it appears that all the journeys were made on horseback.
Incredibly Wesley was so familiar with this mode of travel that it is recorded that he normally read a book and his favourite was Bunyan’s Pilgrim’ s Progress.
In April 1740 he was overnight in Hungerford and it is reported that he studied and sang hymns. There is no detail of names of his supporters but there is one mention of a visit to Ramsbury where he records that he was welcomed, lodged and entertained.
Methodism continues in our 19th century Bridge Street church built in 1864 although it is sad to record the demolition of the much larger Wesleyan Methodist church in Charnham Street.
As I was the last surviving trustee of that church I was saddened by its loss, much as I was when the Chilton Factory disappeared.

A fabulous afternoon of live music with local band Des Simmonds + The Poachers encouraged everyone to enjoy the best of the spring sunshine this weekend in
Hungerford.Children mingled with the grown ups as music fi lled the spacious
Atrium at The Three Swans Hotel and a relaxed friendly atmosphere fi lled the room. A lazy Sunday afternoon drifted into a sunny evening as everyone spilled on to the pavement tables, bringing a little continental café culture to the high street. Comments owner Steve Hodges “it was great to see the band playing to an enthusiastic crowd – many of whom traveled from Newbury. At towns and villages all over Europe, they do this café culture thing so well, so why not here in Hungerford”? A relaxed family atmosphere with a touch of continental style was apparent, as guests enjoyed cream teas and a cuppa or, sipped rose wine or pints of beer in the spring sunshine. -Jenny Ford
SUNDAY SPRING FLING AT THE THREE SWANS HOTEL,
HUNGERFORD.
The Antiques Roadshow Supper Evening, organised by the Rotary Club of Hungerford, attracted over 100 local people, most of whom brought along items for valuation by local
Hungerford dealers, from Styles Silver, Furr & Co., Greatgrooms, Below Stairs and Roger King Antiques.
Nearly £1500 was raised for Hungerford Rotary charities.Items of interest included: A gilded relief Plaque of Dickens
...2012 is his celebration year,a heart shaped 3.75 carat baguette diamond ring set in18 carat
white & yellow gold valued at.....£35K, a gilt bronze 19th century, Louis xv style, mantle clock....£1500, a Regency rosewood brass inlaid clock circa 1815... £1200, 2 miniature copies of 2 very famous oil paintings on Ivory...£10K/£20K the pair.
Rotary President and Local farmer David Wallace said, how pleased and proud he was to represent the heart of Hungerford in its quest to “show off” what the Town is so famous for throughout the world. -James Brown.

ROTARY ANTIQUES SHOW A HUGE SUCCESS
...Continued from page 1The town’s attractive boutiques draw customers from far afi eld
and its ladies’ and gentlemen’s hairdressers are of exceptional standard. There is excellent visitor accommodation in the town’s hotels, and restaurants provide a high standard of cuisine and the many inns and pubs offer great relaxation, food and fun nights.
The increasingly used Triangle Field sporting area is set for improved facilities.
The wharf area is becoming more attractive to canal users and the newly opened canal pedestrian bridge is proving popular.
The town’s parking problems are in the spotlight and under review. Hungerford Town Council, headed by the mayor Cr Martin Crane OBE, has appointed a consulting fi rm to advise on development of the railway station precincts and is also considering appointing a surveyor to advise on traffi c movement.
Cr Richard Hudson has suggested that the St John Ambulance Station could be purchased by council and used for a bus and taxi area at the railway station.
HUNGERFORD DEVELOPMENT ERA AHEAD

Over 100 members of the Hungerford Historical Association listened to an excellent, scholarly talk by Robin Buchanan – Dunlop on the history of his village, Ham, in the middle
ages.He cleverly linked the narrative of the English nation with
the history of this beautiful Wiltshire village and reminded his audience that the Wansdyke, which passes through the parish, was once a major defensive position, although its actual origins are lost in the mists of time. Several others of the 10th and 11th century’s boundary markers as mentioned in the original charter and the Domesday Book can still be found today. It was a well received presentation which added to member’s historical knowledge of Ham.
The next talk will be given by Mr William Shand M.D “A man that looks on glass...” on Wednesday, April 25th 2012 at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford. - Shelagh Parry

Heritage with the Adviser
Marlborough
Between 145-65 million years ago the chalk on which Marlborough now lies was formed from the remains of sea creatures who lived in the warm Cretaceous seas.
Marlborough now lies approximately 150m above sea level and those limestone sediments now provide the basis for our very existence supporting a rich farmland, diverse wildlife and beautiful clear chalkland streams. Successive ice ages and fluctuating temperatures changed the landscape and the rising and falling sea levels changed Britain’s coastlines time and again.
Much of our area is now a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, as well as parts of the River Kennet being a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Not to mention, of course, the fact that we are living in one of the most important archaeological and historical landscapes in the country.
The last ice age ended about 11,500 years ago leaving Wiltshire almost barren of vegetation and little more than an arctic tundra. However, over time the country warmed and became forested, firstly with birch and pine, then with a dense broad-leafed woodland, allowing mankind to begin to recolonise this area. By about 8,500 years ago, the rising sea levels cut Britain off from the continent for the final time and the people living here stayed for good. A. George

Marlborough Air Ambulance Supporters will be running further regular car boot sales on Marlborough Common – starting at 9am on 6th May, 17th June, 1st July, 5th August and 9th September. If you want a pitch, just turn up on the day after 9am. It will cost you £8 for a car, £10 for car and trailer or £10 for vans.
Car boot sales have always been popular events in Marlborough and this newly formed group are hopeful that they can raise a considerable amount for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance. Tombola, a bouncy castle and food will also be available. So, whether it's the children's' toys, tools from the garage, or whatever is lurking at the back of the cupboards – make some money for yourself and have an enjoyable time in support of this most worthwhile cause.

fall off quite often, but from low heights and generally landing on your feet. As Cllr Caroline Jackson pointed out, exercise which improves balance and encourages children who these days can sometimes barely hop or jump, is a wonderful idea. This would also encourage play outdoors.
Marlborough Town Council had been approached by a group of St John's students who have found suitable mature trees in Priory Gardens. They went to the trouble of making an amazingly professional video, in order to request if they could use these trees. The committee, chaired by Rich Pitts, encouraged St John's student Harry Shakeshaft, who attended the meeting, to answer the councillors' questions about slacklining. There was a positive response from all around the table, with a cautionary note from Cllr Bryan Castle that it should be made clear that any abuse of the system would result in the privilege being curtailed.
Daffodils growing by the roadside have often been planted by the community for everyone to enjoy. Perhaps the mature gentleman in the lovely car with the personalised number plate that I spotted will think twice before helping himself in future.
Grrr . . . Val’s Rant !
The human species is obviously not as intelligent as the cat, but nevertheless they can learn quite a lot - if properly managed. Topics we will be discussing include the use of purring as a human reward, rubbing your human up the right way, when to bite, spraying as a method of making our wishes known, teaching basic cat language and dealing with human inattention. Next week - How to teach your human good manners!

The terrace of cottages in Kennet Place, as well as businesses within the Ropeworks were due to be protected by a flood alleviation scheme this year. However, having carried out detailed surveys, the Environment Agency found that due to the complexity of services running through the river bank, the flood defence would have to be re-sited closer to the water. It had originally been planned along the kerbside. The result is an escalation of costs for the works. Wiltshire Council and Marlborough Town Council had agreed to contribute to the funding, but this is now under further discussion.

Work Startson New St John’sTennis Courts
St John's Headteacher Dr Patrick Hazlewood announced work began on 2nd April to construct six new tennis courts, at a cost of £250,000. They are expected to be completed in early June.
The courts will be sited on land between the new school and the new housing development.
Dr Hazlewood thanked parents at the school for their support.
“The tennis courts will be an enormous benefit to students at St John's, and we will also be making the courts available for use by community groups during evenings, weekends and school holidays, giving a real boost to the provision of sports facilities in the town. My huge thanks to the many parents and friends of St John's who have donated money to help us achieve this project. I am also very grateful to the members of the St John's Family & Friends Association who have raised £15,000 towards the project, including £10,000 for additional student lockers which will be installed over the coming weeks”.

Marlborough Town Council Amenities and Open Spaces Committee learned about the latest craze amongst young people which involves fresh air, keeping fit, no noise or mess, as well as being entertaining for onlookers. A slackline is best described as a sort of tightrope, but is a broad webbed strap more often associated with securing loads on trucks. The ratchet device at one end tensions the strap which is secured between two mature trees, the bark being protected by carpet. Specific supports have also been developed, which could be installed at minimal cost, this was suggested as a possibility for the Salisbury Road Recreation Ground.
Balancing on a slackline requires practice for any age group and as was demonstrated on the video, expect to
