The company said its temporary use ban (TUB) had one aim – urging people to use less water now to ensure there is enough to go around later in the year. In a bid to help its 8.8 million water customers across London and the Thames Valley to continue to use less water, the firm reiterated its long-standing offer to them to order free household water-saving devices - including shower heads, four-minute shower timers and tap inserts - from its www.thameswater.co.uk/ waterwisely website. We have now received below-average rainfall across our region for 20 of the past 25 months. “Imposing restrictions on the use of hosepipes, although regrettable, is the most sensible and responsible next step in encouraging everyone to use less water so we can maintain supplies for as long as it stays dry, and reduce the risk of more serious restrictions later in the year. “People often wonder what the benefit of a hosepipe ban is until you explain that running a sprinkler for an hour uses as much water as a family of four uses in a whole day. Right now families’ needs must come first. This really is the most responsible thing to do. “While breaching the ban is a criminal offence, the last thing we want to have to do is prosecute people. We are rather asking people to work with the ban, not against it, appealing for our customers’ understanding, co-operation and help in using this precious resource as sparingly as possible”. CHRIS RADFORD, Wagon Yard, Marlborough. 0800 731 6879, evenings 01672 516006.

One of my deepest journalistic regrets is never having met the greatest Englishman of the 20th Century – Sir Winston Churchill. However, I did know three of his close relatives who

told me odd things about him. They were Duncan Sandys, his son-in-law who had married Churchill’s daughter Diana, his son-in-law, Christopher Soames, who married his daughter Mary, and his grandson, who was also called Winston. From them I heard a few Churchillian anecdotes worthy of record.

Churchill’s French was always fractured and Sandys told me that he was present at a wartime meeting chaired by the great man and attended by the French leader-in waiting, General de Gaulle, who, though having no real power or effective authority, was being his arrogant self objecting to this and that. Suddenly, the furious Churchill stood up, looked de Gaulle in the eye and shouted ‘Si vous m’opposerez je vous get riderai!’.

Sandys also recalled an incident in the wartime Cabinet room when Lord Beaverbrook, then Minister of Aircraft Production, having lost a heated argument, responded by saying ‘You mustn’t be hard on a poor old man’. This preposterous image of the thrusting, self-made millionaire generated raucous laughter, especially from Winston. (The ‘Beaver’ was to use the same gambit with me whenever he was worsted in an argument about defence.)

I became friendly with Sandys when he was Defence Minister in the late 1950s and needed media support for the many post-war changes he made. I found him to be as cool under political fi re as he had been when fi ghting the Germans in Norway in 1941 when he had received a severe wound which gave him a permanent limp. I needed to alert him to a scandalous situation which I imagined would cause him deep concern. It involved Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, whose unusual sexual activities had been publicly revealed in court in 1963 when sued for divorce by the Duke. As evidence, the prosecution had produced some devastating pictures of the Duchess, one of which showed her wearing only a pearl

necklace while in encounter with a naked man, whose head did not appear on the photograph which had been taken to enhance the excitement.

There was a Fleet Street scramble to identify ‘the headless man’ which quickly required me to telephone Sandys in his ministerial offi ce in Whitehall to warn him that there was a growing newspaper belief that he was the culprit. I will never forget his cool response - ‘Don’t worry dear boy! There’s safety in numbers!’

I became friendly with Christopher Soames through shooting and lunching at Highclere and he told me of his fi rst meeting with de Gaulle in 1968 when he began a four-year stint as British ambassador in Paris. Still installed as the French Prime Minister, the vengeful de Gaulle peered at Soames and said, slowly and almost menacingly, ‘Nous savons qui vou êtes’.

When discussing his grandfather’s habits with Winston junior, I expressed surprise that, as he had always seemed to have a glass of whiskey and had smoked so many cigars, he had lived to be 91. ‘He was a bit of an old fraud in both respects’ Winston replied. ‘The cigar and the whiskey were media trademarks. He didn’t puff the cigar much and drank little of the whiskey’.

In fact, the war had taken a vicious toll on his health which was withheld from the public. He suffered two minor strokes in 1949, when he was 75, and a massive one in the summer of 1953, while he was still Prime Minister. With the help of Beaverbrook and other newspaper barons, his condition was withheld from the media and the public. Churchill recuperated hidden away at Beaverbrook’s villa near Monte Carlo, and did not resign until 1955. During the ten more years that he lived he was having increasing diffi culty getting to his seat in the Commons but that, too, was not reported out of respect for our wartime debt to him.

Going through some newspaper fi les we felt we should share this with our readers.

Appearing in The Wangaratta Chronicle Despatch newspaper in Victoria, Australia many years ago was the following report:

“Humphrey Cain, the president of the Folklore Society of Australia, had some problems when he went to the Wangaratta Airport to open a vintage aircraft exhibition. Mr Cain was unable to deliver his opening speech above the noise of a Dragweave triplane whose engine was jammed in the on position. As he moved to a quieter corner, a home-made French microlite took off and crashed into the ladder he meant to speak from. And as the frustrated Mr Cain was making his way to the refreshment tent, Mrs Margaret McCracken, an 83-year-old amateur parachutist landed on his head”.

“I would like to thank you and your excellent magazine for the business it has provided me. Currently I am so busy that I am turning work away. What started out as a small part time job has escalated into a near full time operation largely through advertising with you.”

WHAT YOU SAID:

DON’T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT...

We always say that The Adviser is here to help, and this week two separate advertisers complimented us on our

publication and its promotional benefits.
