6 Week Course November/December 2011 10.30am-11.30am

Life Coaching is a supportive and motivating practice that helps you determine and achieve personal goals. It helps to identify the changes you wish to make in your life

and agree a simple step plan to help you make those changes. We will look at the 4 core areas of life, health, wealth, relationships and spirituality and

discuss ways in which we can help each other improve them. Areas of interest could be health & beauty, fashion style and colour, fi tness & nutrition, art, fi lms, books, or

anything of interest! We will have group discussions and guest speakers!

Marlborough’s Christmas lights will be turned on at nightfall on Thursday, November 24.

Marlborough Town Council discussed the lights at its meeting on Monday.

A large tree near St Mary’s Church, will be decorated with Christmas lights to shine over the town and the light fi ttings will remain in place throughout the year and will represent major savings for future years. There will also be lights in lime trees.

Use of the large tree would eliminate the need to fell a large Christmas tree and would be environmentally friendly Cr Richard Pitts said.

HUNGERFORDHUNGERFORD JUNE FLOWER FESTIVALSUGGESTED FOR QUEEN’S JUBILEEA Hungerford June Flower Festival has been suggested to celebrate The Queen’s diamond jubilee next year. The suggestion was made at the last Hungerford Town Council meeting at which the mayor, Cr Martin Crane appealed to townspeople for celebratory suggestions.Walks and a general sprucing up of the town have already been suggested. The council is also discussing a more pro-active role in marketing Hungerford.

CHAMBER SEEKS RETAIL MEMBERSHungerford Chamber of Commerce is seeking more active retail members. This was emphasised at a recent chamber meeting.

RIOT ARREST AT HUNGERFORDA young Hungerford man was arrested after the recent riots and charged with offences under the Communications Act, police told Hungerford town councillors at a rcent meeting. Police also reported that three prolifi c shoplifters were arrested in Newbury after a tip-off from Hungerford. Their car contained a large quantity of goods.

BRIGADOON FOR TOWN SHOWBrigadoon has been revealed as the 2012 Town Show by David Clayton Chairman of The Community of Hungerford Theatre Company. Lerner and Loewe, who also wrote My Fair Lady, have produced a wonderful musical, he goes on to say, which tells the tale of an enchanted village that appears out of the Highland mist for one day in every 100 years. Musical numbers include `Almost Like Being in Love` and `Heather on the Hill` which amongst others are a delight. It’s a story of community, mystery and romance with many opportunities for adults, boys and girls of all ages to sing, dance and act as we bring this Highland fantasy to life. Whether or not you`ve been involved with the Community of Hungerford Theatre Company before, all are invited to the shows launch on Monday 19th September at Herongate Leisure (7.15 to 8.15 for juniors and 8.15 to 10.15 for adults) at which you hear the music and learn more about the story. Audition pieces will be available for principal roles which will take place on September 26th but no auditions are necessary if you wish to be in the chorus. We would also welcome those that preferring to stay backstage getting involved with; costumes, props, lighting, painting, publicity etc etc. There`s always plenty to do and there are sure to be new friends and laughs along the way building to the excitement of the show itself playing to packed houses next February! For more details please take a look at www.hungerfordtheatrecompany.co.uk -Barry Waddell

CHURCH FETE RAISES OVER £1000St Mary’s, Chilton Foliat church fete raised more than £1000 last Saturday; a good result given the economic downturn and rain during the morning.

SHOW AN OUTSTANDING SUCCESSThe Royal County of Berkshire Show at Newbury Showgrounds was again an outstanding success at the weekend with thousands of people attending and rain failing to dampen enthusiasm.

WELL DONE ROTARY AND HUNGERFORD!Hungerford Rotarians collected £790.95 for the army’s national charity ABF at the weekend organiser David Heather reports. ABF Berkshire chairman Peter Walker has thanked the Rotary club for its work saying the fi gure is an achievement of which Hungerford can be proud.

I’m sure it is going to be a fun fi lled, lively evening”Other highlights of the season include a 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards double winners Show of Hands on 26 October, organised by Marlborough Folk Roots as part of a tour which culminates in a sell-out concert at the Royal Albert Hall in April next year. REUNION By John Cameron-Hayes I don’t intend to start writing my column again but readers have questioned why I have failed in recent months to report my tales of daring do in the articles which I once wrote for the Adviser. I remind you that my weekly column appeared one hundred and fi fty seven times ; and I was able to make you aware, without boasting , that I had served boldly and bravely brandishing my sword in many campaigns for Queen and Country, and felt you needed no further evidence of my bravery, courage and audacity. However, in spite of my gallantry no award was pinned to my chest ; so in order to maintain my stature I manufactured an array of med-als with the help of my friend – a farrier , and a young lady who cut up some designer material to provide the medal ribbons. Although I have felt unrewarded for my courageous exploits , there has now come a time for my valour and intrepidity to be acclaimed. So I must declare that The First Lady and I recently celebrated a ‘three score’ reunion which deserves recognition . And it has only been achieved by resorting to ‘Military Discipline’ imposed by me, and strict enforcement of ‘Zero Tolerance’. Hitherto there has been no case of ‘ Domestic Violence’ - but there is still time. All I ask for is the award of a gallantry medal which I think I have deserved.

This was the largest ever fi re in Hungerford’s history and took fi fteen days to damp down.Jack also bought along photos; fi reman’s helmets; boots and other memorabilia from both Hungerford and Hungerford’s twin town of Ligeuil in France. The next talk will be given by Dr Hugh Pihlens “The Pihlens fam-ily – from Latvia to Hungerford on Wednesday, October 26th at 7.30pm in the Corn Exchange, Hungerford-Shelagh Parry.

HUNGERFORD SEEKS ANSWERSTO GAS WORKS QUESTIONSA difference of opinion has emerged over Hungerford Town Council’s efforts to receive an indication of concilliation for the town’s and residents’ inconvenience during the prolonged recent gas works in the town centre. It was apparent at the last Hungerford Town Council meeting that the mayor Cr Martin Crane’s opinion and that of District Councillor David Holtby varied considerably.Cr Holtby said there was no mechanism for town compensa-tion, unlike individual businesses seeking compensation for alleged loss of business.Cr Holtby said the contractors had encountered unpredicted obstacles in their works and had not been able to complete on time.He said he had found a lack of liaison between the council and chamber of commerce with Hungerford businesses dur-ing the crisis. Cr Crane questioned whether the holdup under the railway bridge was because West Berkshire had not done its home-work. Cr Roger Thompson said he had written to West Berk-shire Council with several questions that had not been an-swered.

Football with Ron TarryHUNGERFORD’S LEAD REDUCED TO 5PTSAfter their excellent midweek win over Tiverton, Hungerford were back at Yate on Saturday, having been knocked out of the F.A.Trophy by the Gloucestershire side the previous week. Again it was a last- minute goal which was critical, the home side winning the cup match in the 90th.minute, and this time getting an unlikely equaliser right at the end to rob Hungerford of all three points. The visitors had the better of the play but could not break down the Yate defence until late on, when Mark Draycott’s goal looked to be enough for the victory, but again they succumbed in the last minute when Tom Warren struck the equalizer.Hungerford’s lead at the top of the table was reduced to 5 points as a result of this draw.

Thames Water is offering customers in the Hungerford and Marlborough area free water-saving gadgets for taps, showers and toilets that could help cut utility bills by up to £75 a year.In a bid to encourage people to value this increasingly precious resource and use less of it without making drastic changes to their lifestyles, Thames Water has launched Waterwisely, www.thameswater.co.uk/waterwisely, the world’s fi rst online water-effi cient town. Customers can log on to Waterwisely to calculate their water use and get areport for their household together with a series of tips for reduced water use – and bills – and make pledges to do so which they can share with friends on Facebook.FREE WATER-SAVING GADGETSPeople can order a series of free water-saving gadgets from Waterwisely, including tap aerators and water-effi cient shower heads, hosepipe triggers, devices to reduce the water used fl ushing toilets and shower timers, challenging people to take showers of four minutes of or less.Water for the Hungerford and Marlborough area comes from underground bore holes feeding the River Kennet, the world-renowned chalk stream. It is recognised that taking water from the Kennet has the potential to put strain on the wildlife habitats the river supports.Charlotte Hitchmough, director of Action for the River Kennet (ARK), said: “There simply is no excuse not to take advantage of Waterwisely’s offer of water-saving gadgets - they are completely free and could reduce your utility bills by up to £75 a year.REDUCING THE STRAIN“By using less water each of us can reduce the strain on the River Kennet. It’s a no-brainer. ARK will continue to put pressure on all parties to make sure the amount of water going to Swindon is drastically reduced, and in the mean time we can all value every drop of water we use in the Kennetvalley.’’Dr Rose Timlett, WWF-UK freshwater programme manager, said: “This year, low rainfall coupled with abstraction to supply homes in Marlborough, Hungerford and Swindon have taken their toll on the River Kennet. With low fl ow levels along the river, and some stretches

having dried up completely, the recovery of some river species including voles and otters could bethreatened. “The good news is that we can band together to reduce the amount of water we use around the home, and so help to reduce the amount of water that needs to be taken from this river. Each of us uses around 160 litres of water a day and the Government is aiming to get this down to 130. It is estimated that nearly a third of the water we use is unnecessary - so taking up the offer of free water-effi cient kit and trying to reduce the amount we use can make a big difference without any big investments or sacrifi ce from home owners.”NOT TAKING WATER FOR FUNRichard Aylard, Thames Water’s sustainability director, added: “We don’t take water from rivers for fun, or for any other reason than because our customers need it. If they use less, then we will take less. Water-effi ciency is not just our responsibility. It is a team effort in which we, our regulators and our customers all have a part to play.”Meanwhile Thames Water continues to work on a long-term solution to reduce the amount we transfer to south Swindon from our bore hole at nearby Axford.15 MILES TO SWINDONOf the 10 (Mld) million litres a day on average that the company takes from the aquifer under Axford, 6Mld to 7 Mld is piped 15 miles north to Swindon, with the rest supplying customers locally. While the water used locally is returned to the Kennet following treatment at sewage works in the area, the 6-7 Mld of water going to Swindon, once used, is not fed back to the Kennet but rather to the River Ray, a tributary of the Thames. This means every day the Kennet is losing up to seven million litres, which has the potential to put a lot of strain on the wildlife habitats that the river supports.PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENTIn order to protect the chalk stream environment, the Environment Agency has said previously that it plans to ask Thames Water to reduce the water it sends to Swindon from Axford by 3Mld. The company is working with the EA on a plan for a £10m pipeline to take water from the River Thames at Farmoor Reservoir, halving Swindon’s reliance on the Kennet. -Simon Evans.
