United Nations Development Program. The Institute has outreach programs in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa. IITA scientists from 45 nations work in partnershipwith national agricultural agencies to increase food production in tropical Africa, and ultimately to raise the productivity and income of family farmers.

The goal of resource management research at IITA is to develop economically viable farming systems which permit increased and sustainable production by familyfarmers. Good management practices should enable them to make more effective use of their resources: soil, radiation, vegetation, water, material inputs, labor andother energy sources. The development of farming systems to support the population of Africa in the 21 st century is one of the most profound challenges to internationalagriculture. For this reason, IITA plans to increase the strength of its research effort in this field over the coming years.

The Leader of the Resource Management Unit will direct a multidisciplinary team of soil scientists, agronomists, ecologists, weed scientists, an agroclimatologist, aneconomist and agricultural engineers in (a) studying the physical, chemical, biological and socio-economic elements of the natural resource base; (b) analyzing thedeterminants of stability, productivity and degradation; and (c) designing improved resource management systems and in adapting them to the farming systems of themajor ecosystems of West and Central Africa.

Candidates should possess a relevant research background (PhD or equivalent degree in an appropriate subject), and have had a minimum of five years ofinternational experience. They should be keen scientists with a vision of how applied research can address practical problems. POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPSThe Imperial Cancer Research Fund is one of the largest Independent cancer research Institutes in Europeemploying approximately 400 scientists and clinicians. It has a wide ranging programme in fundamental, appliedand clinical cancer research. There are approximately seventy research groups encompassing the major disciplines of cellular and molecularbiology including biochemistry, genetics, immunology, and virology. Most are housed at the main building inCentral London; there are also research units at Clare Hall, North London and at Dominion House attached to St.Bartholomew's Hospital. ICRF's external clinical units based in major teaching hospitals form the link betweenfundamental research and clinical activities. Each research group works independently. All have access to centralized services including cell production, oligonucleotide and peptide synthesis, amino acid and DNA sequencing, a library of DNA probes and somatic cellhybrids for gene mapping, experimental animal breeding and maintenance including transgenic mice, electronmicroscopy, and a large computer facility.Approximately 40 posdoctoral fellowships are available each year to scientists of any nationality. Most of theseare three year fellowships, but visiting fellowships for a period of one or two years, are offered.
