Help for Struggling Students - from the Verde Learning Center
The Verde Learning Center is proud to present a second installment of “Transforming Good Students into Great Learners” study session. This program is based on the
ThinkWell-LearnWell©
model developed at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, NC,
and implemented at over 700 colleges throughout the U.S.
The premise is that many students work hard, yet do not earn grades that reflect their effort and abilities. In many cases, it’s because they use approaches to learning that worked well for them in high school, however are inadequate for the demands and expectations of rigorous college courses. The Transforming Students study session helps students understand why their hard work is not paying off in the form of grades they can be proud of, and offers them some strategies to adapt their study techniques.
These techniques are based on metacognitive awareness and Bloom’s higher order thinking skills. Many students who have implemented strategies have seen significant improvements in not only their grades (20 percentage points increases in test scores are not uncommon), but also in their mastery of course content, increased self-confidence, and more positive attitudes about school.
The next study session will take place on the following dates/times. Students should attend all 3 sessions to gain the maximum benefit from the program.
Wed., Feb. 20 & Feb. 27 12:00-1:30pm G- 103
Wed., March 6 12:00-1:00pm G-103

A Note from Disability Resources... Robb Ferguson, Director, x2079, Amy Myrick, Specialist, x2057
This is a good time for a Disability Resources reminder for instruc-
tors and inform new instructors of the Testing Accommodation
procedure for students with disabilities. You may receive an Instruc-
tor Notification Form from a student which outlines their accommoda-
tions for the semester. There are quite a few accommodations that
can be made for testing/quizzes, which are: extended time, scribe,
reader, assistive technology, private room, and large print.
Choices: Extended Time or Large Print -Out of Classroom Testing Center,
Bldg. 1, Rm 224
Proctored Testing - Disability Resources Testing Lab, Bldg. 1, Rm
207
YOUR procedure for both of these options is to complete the Out
of Classroom Test Form required from the Testing Center. If a test
needs to be proctored by Disability Resources, the test is signed-out
from the Testing Center by DR, proctored by DR, and then signed back in to the Testing Center and returned to you. It is the stu-
dents’ responsibility to arrange testing times with Disability Re-
sources. Please note: we take every precaution in order to
ensure the integrity of your exams/quizzes.
Many disabilities make it difficult for students to have time con-
straints on exams. It could be difficulties with focus and concentra-
tion, a learning disability of some kind, a processing deficit, or even a
psychological disability. It is extremely important that these students
complete their exam in the Out of Classroom Testing Lab or the DR
Testing Lab since it may not be just an issue with time, it could also
be an environmental issue.
Remember, it’s the students’ responsibility to know what
their accommodations are and communicate with you
about them. They are encouraged to use the accommoda-
tions that have been set up for them but ultimately it is
their choice to use them or not.
Please contact Disability Resources at any time with your questions
or concerns. We are here to help.
Have a great semester!
