MUSEUM NOTES

A big thank you for the donors of goods for our garage sale held over Easter Weekend. As noted last Powa edition weare holding another sale on the 8th June 2019 at the same place, next to the garage at our storage facility.

We had such a good response and a lot more stuff has been donated including more furniture and nick nacks. Wewere surprised that our golfing sets did not sell and are hoping a better sale on the 8th. This is definitely the last garagesale and after Saturday the left over items will be distributed to another community group.

Time starts at 8.30 and not before.

Progress is continuing on the inner building. Plastering is finished and painter due to start soon. We still have theconcreting to do and vinyl to lay on floors. We are busy working on getting more funds to complete.

Museum Firewood SalesIt has now been 5 years with many cubic metres processed and a great deal of volunteer hours expended with thiscommunity project. Should you wish to obtain wood for later this winter or next year. Phone Bill 027 262 8137 and I amsure he will have a deal for you. Currently stocking dry gum, green gum, partly seasoned pine.

Committee, Waikouaiti District Museum

Come and join the POWA committee – testimonial from a new member

If you are interested in making a difference in our community, want to get involved in some new projects and have afew hours to spare each month why don't you consider becoming a POWA committee member?

I joined the committee a year ago, and I confess I mainly did it because the waste minimization group I was involvedwith (now OneCoast) was making a grant application through POWA and needed a representative on the committee. But when I did start going to meetings I discovered that there is so much more going on, new activities popping upmost months in which you can get involved or not, as your time and interests allow. So far in the last year as well asOneCoast activities I have attended Civil Defense meetings – great potential for strengthening neighbourhoods beforedisaster strikes – wrapped prizes and written questions for the quiz night, helped take soil samples from the proposedsite for the community garden and written articles for the POWA newsletter, this one included. I didn't appreciate howmany different projects are starting in the area and how much work goes on behind the scenes. With more people onboard even more could be done. I have enjoyed working with Sonya, who is a great organiser and the monthlymeetings with the other committee members. We would welcome some more, especially from the younger generationsfor more diverse community links and points of view.

So how about it? Come to the AGM and have a look, maybe put your name forward. See you there.

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the Waikouaiti Volunteer Fire Brigade report for May 2019. We have had another quiet month this month with 5 calls.• Fire x 2• Private fire alarm activation x 1• MVA x 2

Personnel updateOur 3 recruit fire fighters Ben, Brett and Melissa have just come back fromdoing their 2 day first aid course in which they learnt about CPR and traumacare. Their next course is their 7 day recruit fire fighter course in Christchurch inDecember.

Children's Nightwear Children’s Nightwear – New Fire Hazard Labelling Whatever kind of nightwear a child is wearing, fire is still a serious risk. Childrenshould stay at least one metre away from the heater or fire. Parents can choosesafe nightwear for their child, but no clothes are fire-proof. When looking forsafe nightwear, parents should choose the size that fits snugly. Baggy or loosenightwear can catch fire more easily.

Fire risk labelsAll children’s nightwear needs to have a fire-risk label on it. From 1 April 2019, a red label means high fire danger, and a new orange label is a warning tochoose close-fitting options. Other garments, such as those made of more fireresistant materials like wool blends, can still use the white Low Fire Dangerlabel.

Some of the new orange labels may be in a sticker form while they are beingintroduced, but only for a three-month period from 1 April to 1 July 2019. Afterthis time, the orange labels must be permanently attached to the garment. Thissticker should be removed after the purchase for washing and wearing. Ifparents are using or buying second-hand nightwear they should assume thenightwear is not heat or flame resistant whether the nightwear has a fire risklabel or not.

Around the fire or heater If a child is wearing high fire danger nightwear they should stay far away fromthe fire or heater. But even a ‘low danger’ label doesn’t mean there is nodanger. Nightwear that say ‘low fire danger’ can still catch fire if the child is tooclose. If there are young children in the house, parents should put safety guardsaround the heater or fire. Parents should teach children the ‘metre from theheater’ rule and watch that children don’t sit or walk closer than a metre to theheater or fire.

WAIKOUAITI HERITAGE CENTRERoughly four kilometers North East of Waikouaiti sits historic MatanakaFarm. The land purchased in 1838, it is said "on very honourable terms"from local Maori Chiefs by Sydney born John Jones, dates from 1840and was the first farm in Otago, vitally servicing the needs of a fledgingDunedin. Matanaka, in the early days named Prospect Farm, wasalready a flourishing venture a good half decade before the arrival ofthe John Wickliffe in 1848.

John Jones farming schemes were very successful. From Sydney heattracted twelve families to come to Waikouaiti and engage in farmingand other pursuits. This included his brother Thomas Jones to work asfarm manager. They arrived March 1840 in Jones vessel the Magnet. The families settled on a flat area of land at the foot of the hill on theNorth East end of Waikouaiti Bay, known locally as Matanaka by thebeach. Jones farm on the hill above was Matanaka.

By 1843 John Jones was residing on the farm with his family. He hadbuilt a substantial homestead, farm buildings, stores and erected 4,000roods of fencing with materials imported from Sydney. With greatforesight he had bush cleared for wheat and other crops, importedcattle, breeding cows, ewes and horses. He was a successful importerand trader and was a significant figure in Otago at that time as almostnothing was bought and sold with out him having a say.

Flash forward to present day, his strategically built and picturesquehomestead is occupied now by the current owners. Open to the publicare five farm buildings that are the oldest surviving farm buildings stillin their original position in the country. They are of category oneheritage status and are considered "historically outstanding ". They areadministered by Heritage New Zealand. The farm buildings are a mustsee. From the top carpark you walk through stands of bluegum plantedby John Jones. Set against the expanse of the Pacific Ocean. You canenter inside each building which includes the granary where a youngMcCloud Orbell was locked in of a night with his brothers in 1847because the cottage assigned to the family by Jones was too tiny.Locked in to "prevent pilfering" apparently. I wonder if anythingwas said years later after the two families united. McCloud's sister Marymarried John Jones eldest son John R. Jones in 1853.

If you haven't visited the museum in recent times then l recommend youdo. There is a plethora of items, information, photos and portraits layingout the importance of what went on here and its huge significance inthe development of Otago. Watch out too for the opening of thewonderful new build in Kildare Street. There will be themed displaysshowcasing treasures hidden away in storage due to an earlier lack ofspace. Guaranteed to be worth a look or two or three.

John Jonesabout 40 yearsof age andresident ofMatanaka.Thehomesteadbuilt in 1843for the Jonesfamily.

EAST OTAGO HEALTH

Farewell to HilaryOn Thursday the 16th May we farewelled one of our wonderful Nurses Hilary Yeoman, who predominately worked in our Waikouaiti clinic. Hilary has been a Nurse within this practice for 14 years, she has been through, and seen a number of changes during this time, which Hilary has taken on graciously and has always been an amazing Nurse and wonderful colleague to work alongside.

Don McKirdy was one of our special guests serenading Hilary with his Bag-pipes. We were able to have a few other retired Nurses join the festivities, thank you to everyone who came along and shared this occasion with us.

We wish Hilary a long, happy, healthy and relaxing retirement and hope we don’t get any “gastly shin flaps” fromgardening projects, in the near future, Hilary!?

Who is the biggest fool?

The Six fools is a story collected by Zora Neale Hurston during her travels in1930s Gulf States. It is an outrageously funny tale about a dashing young manwho finds foolish folks aplenty and true love.

As the story opens, a young man has proposed to his sweetheart and seeksthe blessings of his future in-laws. Things goes awry, however, when hisfiancée steps downstairs for some cider, starts to fret about what to name theirfirstborn, and lets the cider pour all over the floor. Her mother and then fatherfind her there, swimming in cider; rather than turning the spigot, they, too, getcaught up in the presently unimportant question of naming the currently non-existent baby. When at last the young man comes to the cellar and finds thefoolish (and wet) family, he declares that he is going off traveling, and if hefinds three fools as big as them, he will return. Inevitably, the young mancomes across some extremely foolish folks (one is trying to jump into his pants, the second is trying to pull the cow onto the barn roof to eat hay, and the thirdis transporting sunshine into her home by wheelbarrow) and returns to hisbeloved.

As reading this funny story, we can’t help but wondering why the young manreturned to the foolish girl (and the family). Why not seek another – wiser girl??Reading this sort of story of fools often makes us laugh. It even lets us feelcatharsis since we are not ‘like them.’ We are much wiser, so we do thingsbetter than them. But in the end, we are comforted by such ‘foolish’ people whooften do not calculate things as we do. We have heard a very foolish story fromthe biggest fool ever in history. The fool may say that forgive those who sinagainst us seven times seventy. The fool also says that if anyone slaps you onthe right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sueyou and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well…How foolish s/he is!!Doesn’t she know that the world is not like h/she thinks about? But then werealize that ‘of whom the world was not worthy.’ Faith in Jesus Christ is oftenseen as foolish but only in Christ, we have peace, joy and love – of whom theworld is not worthy.

OneCoast Facilitator Update

A number of public meetings were held throughout the area last month. Sadly, they were not very well attended but wewould love to come and talk to your group about what is/has happened and the plans for the future of the WaikouaitiTransfer Station and the Community Resource Recovery Centre. Send us an invitation to your next meeting!!

We went on a road trip in May to visit the Resource Recovery Centres in Hampden and Palmerston – both are verydifferent but successful, and we gained some helpful tips and ideas for how things could look at Waikouaiti.

Planning is under way for some workshops/activities in June/July based around green waste and how to deal with itefficiently – so make sure you are on our mailing list to receive details of when and where these workshops will behappening – you won’t want to miss out!!!

Our meetings are usually held on the 3rd Thursday of each month but for June it will be on Thursday 27th due to a clash with the Future Living Skills course which is running on a Thursday until the end of June.

HAWKSBURY LAGOON UPDATE

A successful Ki Uta Ki Tai day was held on 27th April this year. Theseevents occur in spring and autumn each year when students, and staff, from the university with an interest in conservation, visit ourcommunities. They are hosted by the marae, and spend time on habitatrestoration for the Rūnaka as well as one day working with theRivercare group at Karitane and one day with the Hawksbury LagoonCommittee. This year there were 15 volunteers who together withcommittee members worked on the northern arm area of the lagoonlooking towards Edinburgh Street. The area was prepared for plantingby first clearing gorse and grasses, this is difficult work as both are wellestablished in the area. The plantings work to a plan that has beendeveloped by ecological consultants with the aim of returning nativespecies to the area. This autumn kowhai, manuka, pittosporums, ti(cabbage trees) and toitoi were planted and protectors added toimprove their chances of survival. Such energic, enthusiastic andfrequently dedicated volunteers are a real pleasure to host.

Significant community effort goes into maintaining and improving thequality lagoon environment. What tends to get overlooked are thewaterways which feed into the lagoon area and Post Office Creek. Some of these flow through residential properties and agricultural land. The care of these has a significant impact on the water quality in thelagoon. What is of major concern is that some waterways are seen asconvenient dumping places. The waterway at the end of Dame Streethas been used recently as vegetation dump. More significantly in thelast year or two there is roofing iron, carpet underlay, and even a discarded couch has been dumped. As these gradually decompose, the metals, plastics and other toxic materials will all be carried into the lagoon where they threatenthe health of the waterway, and the plants, insects, fish and birds that feed and live there. These materials remain in the environment for a very long time or indefinitely and there is no adequate way to remove them. The only solution is to make sure they don’t get there in the first place. So please take care of any water courses running through or near your property and do whatever is necessary to prevent rubbish being dumped in them or nearby. Information about illegal dumping is available on the DCC website.HL committee member

COMMUNITY BOARD UPDATE

Local Body Elections: Have you ever thought of standing for election to theCommunity Board, City Council or Regional Council? It would be stretching thetruth to say that these are fun-filled activities, but there is satisfaction in workingtowards maintaining, and improving, standards and facilities in our communities. It has been a bit disappointing that we have had nobody from Waikouaiti on theCommunity Board for the past three years, in fact nobody from Waikouaiti stoodfor election in 2016.

Election Day is Saturday 12th October and Key Dates prior to that are: Friday12th July - Nominations open; Friday 16th August - Nominations close; 20th -25th September - delivery of voting documents. So, have a think and maybehave a go.

Discretionary Funding: Each year the Board is allocated $10,000 from whichgrants can be provided for community activities. Our allocation for this financialyear has just about been used up and the new financial year starts on 1st July.Grants have been provided in the past year to the following :- Waikouaiti Ridingfor the Disabled; Waikouaiti District Museum; Waitati Music Festival; BlueskinHistory Steering Committee; Karitane Bowling Club; Blueskin News; WaikouaitiWastebusters (now called ‘OneCoast’); Blueskin Youth & Community AmenitiesAssociation; Hawksbury Lagoon Inc. Information on how to apply for a grant canbe found on the Dunedin City Council website.

Karitane Spit: You may have noticed that the southern end of the sand spit has‘swung around’ towards the shore. The DCC Coastal Specialist Engineer hascompleted his investigations regarding the most practical method of encouragingsand to re-form in the previous orientation. Affected parties are being contactedabout the proposed remediation method. It has taken a while, but it wasimportant to ensure that the remediation method would not cause negativeimpacts further upstream.

Our next formal meeting will be held on Wednesday 19th June at WarringtonSurf Club, starting at 5.30 pm. If you would like to come along and speak to theBoard about anything please contact Rebecca Murray at DCC on 477 4000 oremail her at [email protected]
