All ACCOYA® wood undergoes a final visual inspection before leaving the plant. ACCOYA® wood is automatically strapped with binding tape into standard labelled packages, each with a unique number.

Titan Wood supplies ACCOYA® wood in rough sawn dimensions with a moisture content of approximately 3-5%.

Titan Wood handles the loading of lorries ex-works or free handling for delivery in accordance with the customer’s order. Titan Wood cannot be held responsible for any damage that may occur after loading. If the intended product application for the wood requires a specific moisture content, this must be taken into account during transportation and it is the responsibility of the customer to ensure that the wood does not get wet. This can be achieved by transporting the wood in a closed trailer or under tarpaulin. Any form of damage must be avoided at all times. The recipient at the delivery address must ensure that ACCOYA® wood packages are unloaded carefully, preferably using a fork-lift truck or another device with pallet jacks.

In accordance with the moisture content requirements for the intended application, ACCOYA® wood must be carefully stored in the same way as other wood. It is important that it does not become wet or dirty or suffer any damage. ACCOYA® wood must not be wrapped in plastic when stored in sheltered conditions and wood must be stored in a well ventilated facility.

ACCOYA® wood is primarily identified by its packaging labels, which feature the ACCOYA® wood and Titan Wood logos. In case of doubt Titan Wood will, at the cost of the customer, verify the product’s authenticity, with or without the involvement of a wood technology institute. In addition, ACCOYA® wood can generally be traced by its packaging number. It is therefore imperative to retain all relevant documents and to record the movements of each package through to the manufacture of the end products. The packaging number must always be quoted in the case of any queries or complaints.

Information Sheet 04

Determining the moisture content of wood is essential for anyone working with it since many wood properties are influenced by its moisture content. It is an essential part of many quality control systems. The moisture within wood takes two forms: “free water” which is contained in the cell cavities (or lumina), and “bound water” which is contained in the cell wall matrix. Wood releases moisture in dry climates and absorbs moisture in humid conditions.

The wood moisture content is the mass of the water contained in wood, expressed as a percentage of the mass of absolute dry wood.

There are three main methods of measuring the moisture content of wood:

The oven dry method (destructive). A piece of wood is sawn from a board, weighed, dried in an 1. oven at 103 °C for 24 to 48 hours and re-weighed. The wood moisture content is determined on the basis of the weight before and after drying.

An electrical moisture meter measures the electrical resistance of the wood by inserting two 2. electrodes into it. The drier the wood, the higher the resistance. The results are influenced by the temperature and the wood species. The measuring range varies from 8 to 30% wood moisture content.

A capacitive moisture meter measures the dielectric constant of wood when held against it. 3. The measured property is sensitive to the moisture content and to the density of the wood species. According to the manufacturer’s claim, the measuring range varies from 2 to 30% wood moisture content.

Titan Wood supplies ACCOYA® wood with a moisture content of approximately 3 to 5%. This moisture content corresponds to a relative atmospheric humidity of 65% and a temperature of 20°C. This allows ACCOYA® wood to be processed into products for both interior and exterior applications directly after being delivered. The degree of water vapour absorption is substantially reduced with ACCOYA® wood (“bound water”) whereby the equilibrium moisture content is very low in comparison with non-modified wood species in similar climatic conditions. However, ACCOYA® wood can still absorb (fluid) water in the lumina (“free water”).

The wood moisture content of ACCOYA® wood cannot be measured with standard moisture meters prior to processing because its moisture content is below the measuring range. However, the oven dry method is suitable. Standard moisture meters may be used to determine whether ACCOYA® wood has an excess of “free water”. If the measurement shows a moisture content of more than 8% this may indicate the presence of “free water”.

Information Sheet 05

ACCOYA® wood is generally relatively easy to process. Since it is modified throughout the cross section and does not leach, processing does not affect its unique properties, such as durability or dimensional stability.

It should be noted that a light acidic smell may become apparent when ACCOYA® wood is processed. This smell presents no danger whatsoever to the health of humans, animals or plants.

Consistent with the acquired visual quality, the timber may still show certain visual defects after being processed, such as distortion, internal cracks, in-grown bark and resin ducts.

ACCOYA® wood is easily shortened and scalloped (sawn in longitudinal direction). Skilful sawing will give a very smooth appearance with very few indentations (splinters breaking away).

As a result of the production process, newly produced ACCOYA® wood may show some surface irregularities, such as discoloration (brown) and sticker marks. To achieve the characteristic appearance of ACCOYA® wood, it is therefore necessary to plane or saw a couple of millimetres off the rough sawn sides.

ACCOYA® wood is easily planed to a very smooth surface finish. It is, however, important to avoid machining marks during processing and to avoid contact with products that will discolour the surface, such as oil or rust, particularly if the wood is to be translucent coated.

Profiling ACCOYA® wood will give a very smooth surface. Here again, it is important to avoid damaging and staining the surface (see above).

No information currently available.

Sanding ACCOYA® wood presents no challenges. Tests have shown that it is often not necessary to sand ACCOYA® wood when finished with water based coatings since fibres scarcely lift from the surface after moisture absorbance. Please also refer to Information Sheet 08, “Finishing”.

ACCOYA® wood is fixed in the same way as other commonly used wood species and the same rules regarding pre-drilling, countersinking and keeping sufficient distance of the edges apply. Since ACCOYA® wood also contains a small amount of residual acetic acid, it is strongly recommended that corrosion-resistant fixings, such as stainless steel, are used. For further information, please refer to ACCOYA® wood Information Sheet 07, “Contact with Metals”.

Gluing

General X

Changed Properties X

Optimising the XAdhesion Proces

ACCOYA® wood can be glued using many commonly used wood adhesive systems. Particularly good results are obtained with PU, EPI, epoxy and PRF adhesives. The results of gluing with PVAc can vary and gluing with MUF is strongly discouraged.

For gluing under certification schemes, such as KOMO® certification, it is important that the performance of the adhesive in combination with the wood and the gluing process itself is tested. A distinction must be made between load bearing (BRL 2338) and non-load bearing applications (BRL 2339). In addition, the manufacturer of the glued ACCOYA® wood end product should be able to demonstrate that the gluing process is controlled and that the required performance parameter(s) are met. For further information, please contact the administrator of your certification, and for KOMO® certification please contact Stichting Keuringsbureau Hout SKH T: +31(0)317 453425, W: www.skh.org.

Gluing ACCOYA® wood for both load bearing and non-load bearing applications has been tested with a number of adhesive systems for laminating, finger jointing and frame corner joints. More information about these systems can be obtained from Titan Wood in Arnhem or from adhesives suppliers.

When gluing ACCOYA® wood it is strongly recommended that adhesives suppliers are consulted as they have in-depth knowledge of the gluing process and the adhesives and are able to determine the performance of the glued product. Further they have experience of the use of their adhesive systems in conjunction with ACCOYA® wood.

The acetylation process alters the chemical composition of wood, replacing “free hydroxyl groups” with acetyl groups. This substantially reduces the ability of the wood to absorb water and, consequently, its behaviour with regard to swelling and shrinking. Another effect is that the equilibrium moisture content of ACCOYA® wood is substantially lower than untreated wood in the same climatic conditions. This makes ACCOYA® wood dimensionally very stable.

Various tests show that ACCOYA® wood has good gluing properties. However, it is imperative that the product’s modified properties are taken into account when ACCOYA® wood is glued. This is of particular importance because common wood adhesives (PVAc, EPI, PU, PRF) either harden on contact with moisture or (part of) the water content of the adhesive needs to be adsorbed by the wood. The aspects that require extra attention for the effective gluing of ACCOYA® wood are detailed below.

For further information about the moisture content of ACCOYA® wood, please refer to ACCOYA® wood Information Sheet 04 “Wood Moisture Content”.

It is highly recommended that you consult your adhesives supplier in order to obtain the best results for gluing ACCOYA® wood. Points to consider include:

The moisture content of the ACCOYA® wood, which should be similar during gluing to when X

the end product is in situ. The quantity of adhesive to be applied: if possible it should be evenly applied on both sides, in X

accordance with the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions, to avoid blistering.A possibly longer “open-closed” time, which gives ACCOYA® wood more time to absorb the X

water element of the adhesive. The applied pressure during gluing should be adapted to the strength of ACCOYA® wood, as X

should the temperature if heat is applied. The curing time and the best curing conditions. X

Before gluing joints together, the end grains must be sealed using a suitable product (SKH Publication 07-01) as recommended by the supplier. For a long lasting result, Titan Wood emphasizes the importance of a proper frame corner joint. Despite the improved durability and dimensional stability of ACCOYA® wood, it is still important to make the frame corner joint connection watertight to avoid possible paint damage, amongst other things. It is essential that a frame corner is dry and always remains dry.

For laminating under KOMO® certification for non-load bearing applications, the performance of laminated board needs to be tested according to BRL 2902. Further, procedures to assure the quality of the laminated product must be available and implemented in the Quality Management System.

The quality of finger-jointing under KOMO® certification for non-load bearing constructions must be tested independently in conformity with BRL 1704-2. BRL 1704-1 applies to finger jointing for load bearing applications. In addition, procedures must be included in the Quality Management System to assure production quality.

When gluing fixings to ACCOYA® wood (for supporting constructions) it is essential to determine the tensile strength of the glued connection.

Please Note: in view of ACCOYA® wood’s long service life, the use of corrosion-proof fixings and/or fasteners is strongly recommended. Further information about ACCOYA® wood and contact with metals is given in ACCOYA® wood Information Sheet 07.

Further information may be obtained directly from adhesives suppliers. Titan Wood Arnhem can provide contact details if necessary. For further information about KOMO® certification, please contact Stichting Keuringsbureau Hout SKH, T: +31(0)317 453425, W: www.skh.org.

All wood contains organic acids, although the quantity varies by species. These organic acids are the main cause of corrosion of metal fasteners used in wood. ACCOYA® wood has comparable acid levels to species such as oak and Western Red Cedar.

Tests have shown that base metals and galvanised metals that are in direct or indirect contact with ACCOYA® wood will corrode in damp climatic conditions. It is therefore strongly recommended that stainless steel products are used where possible or that the iron and/or the ACCOYA® wood is coated to avoid the two coming into direct contact. Pit corrosion must also be avoided by using fasteners that are compatible with the hinges and locks. Please consult your fixings supplier.

The use of corrosion-proof steel fastenings that conform to EN 10088-1 is recommended, such as A2 or A4 quality stainless steel.

Specially coated (epoxy, polyurethane) fasteners offer a further option. The use of (thermo-) galvanized screws and nails is not recommended.

Galvanised metals are not corrosion-proof when used with ACCOYA® wood. The surface of aluminium, copper and lead may also oxidize, although these have a protective layer on their surface which makes stains on ACCOYA® wood less visible.

Metal corrosion can be substantially reduced if direct contact between metals and ACCOYA® wood is avoided. This can be achieved by coating the wood with a proper sealant or by coating the metal with an acid-resistant coating or other protective layer.

Further information may be obtained directly from suppliers of fasteners, hinges and locks.

ACCOYA® wood may be finished with most commonly used coating systems.

For finishing under KOMO® certification, it is important that the film forming coating systems are tested and approved in accordance with SKH Publication 99-02 (opaque systems) or SKH Publication 00-01 (translucent systems). A list of approved coating products may be found in SKH Publication 04-02. If any other coating system is to be used, its suitability must first be independently assessed.

Titan Wood highly recommends that coatings suppliers are involved in the process as they have in-depth knowledge of coatings, application and how to determine the performance of the finished product. Further they have experience of the use of their coatings systems in conjunction with ACCOYA® wood.

The acetylation process alters the chemical composition of the wood, replacing “free hydroxyl groups” with acetyl groups. This substantially reduces the ability of the wood to adsorb water and, consequently, its behaviour with regard to swelling and shrinking. This makes ACCOYA® wood very dimensionally stable so that the tension within the coating is reduced when climatic conditions change. This may greatly reduce the cost and frequency of maintenance. However, the actual maintenance frequency will depend upon the conditions to which the coated ACCOYA® wood is exposed (orientation, coastal area, etc.) and the colour of the coating.

The surface to be treated must be clean and free of dust and grease. X

The moisture content of the ACCOYA® wood to be finished must be approximately the same X

as the moisture content that it will have in its intended application. Where possible, it is preferable to finish the wooden parts on all sides before mounting or X

assembling them. The limited moisture absorbance capacity of ACCOYA® wood should be taken into account X

during the drying process for water-borne paints. ACCOYA® wood absorbs (liquid) water slowly, but is not hygroscopic. Please contact your coating supplier for advice and processing instructions. X

Sanding ACCOYA® wood presents no challenges. Tests have shown that it is often not necessary to sand ACCOYA® wood when finished with water based coatings since fibres scarcely lift from the surface after moisture absorbance.

Opaque and translucent coating systems must be applied on all sides with a minimum dry film thickness that corresponds to the requirements of the end product and/or paint supplier’s instructions. End grains must be sealed with a suitable product so the protection of all finished sides against water (liquid) uptake is approximately equal. Please contact your coating supplier for further advice.

ACCOYA® wood may be finished with semi-and non-film forming paint systems such as stains and oils. The products tested to date show that the first layer is more quickly absorbed by ACCOYA® wood than water and this gives a good basis for a second layer. Please refer to your coating supplier for advice about the best way to apply their products.

Information Sheet 08

Wood used outdoors will eventually “grey” due to two biological processes that take place within the wood and at its surface:

UV light degrades substances in the wood structure leading to brown discolouration. These 1. substances are water soluble and the surface of the wood pales when washed with water.

UV degraded wood has a more open structure and this allows surface moulds, stains, mosses 2. and algae to penetrate and develop. They do not, however, cause rot. The most common surface fungus is blue-stain fungus, which is actually black but combines with the light colour of the wood to give a greyish appearance on the surface.

To a lesser degree, UV light reaches the interior of the wood, resulting in a dark brown discolouration. Although UV light will degrade certain substances within ACCOYA®, wood the unique feature is that ACCOYA® wood becomes paler in indoor applications. In outdoor applications, ACCOYA® wood will “grey” as a result of blue-stain fungi, which manifests itself as a black spotted surface discolouration. Since ACCOYA® wood is non-toxic, blue-stain growth will occur.

To ensure that coatings perform as expected, on-site agreements between the paint supplier, the painter or contractor and the manufacturer of the ACCOYA® product should be made.

Further information may be obtained directly from coatings suppliers. Titan Wood Arnhem can provide contact details if necessary.

Information Sheet 11

The term “Natural Durability” refers to the resistance of wood in its natural state to wood-destroying organisms, such as fungi and insects. The following table shows the natural durability of wood according to classification EN 350-2:

Classification of the Natural Durability to Wood-destroying Fungi

Class Durability for in-ground situations Average life span

1 Very durable 25 years and more2 Durable 15 – 25 years3 Moderately durable 10 – 15 years4 Slightly durable 5 – 10 years5 Not durable Less than 5 years

This classification refers to fungal attack and is most commonly used when referring to natural durability. The table below indicates the natural durability to four wood-destroying insects, termites and/or marine borers. Marine borers are found in salt and brackish water and include molluscs and crustaceans.

Natural Durability Classification to Insects and Marine Borers

Class Description

D Sapwood and heartwood are very durable.M Moderately durable (only for termites and marine borers).S Sapwood is susceptible to attacks.SH Sapwood and heartwood are susceptible to the four selected insects for testing.V This indicates that the species exhibits an unusually high level of variability.

The risk of fungal attack is determined by the conditions in which the wood is used and the degree of exposure to moisture. The EN 335-1 defines five use classes. The table below gives the classification whereby wetting and the related wood moisture content are determining factors.

Class Conditions of use Wetting Wood moisture content

1 No contact with the ground, Permanently dry Permanent exposure < 20% sheltered and dry

2 No contact with the ground, Occasionally exposed to moisture Incidental short-term exposure* >20% sheltered with little chance of becoming wet

3 No contact with the ground, not Regularly exposed to moisture Regular short-term exposure* >20% sheltered in all weather conditions

4 In contact with ground Permanently exposed to water Permanent exposure >20% or fresh water

5 In contact with salt Permanently exposed to salt water Permanent exposure >20% or brackish water

* Short-term exposure: a period of a couple of days to one week.
