VOLUME 9, ISSUE 2

Greetings from the great Halls of Learning,

Starfleet Academy!

From the Principal’s Office Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer and those Down Under a wonderful Winter.

Your Commandant has had quite the summer of veggie gardening and flower gardening. My veggies plants are finally emerging and my front floral gardens were purged. I just purchased some new flowers to go in the place of the removed ones. Why do I bring this up?

Well, the Academy has grown so much that it was found that some colleges/course have just not remained popular enough to keep them active. Carol Thompson and Glen Diebold have been weeding them out merging some into other colleges/courses and purging others. Don’t worry, though, unlike my flower garden, those colleges/courses that were purged are still held in the archives in case there seems to be a call for them, again.

From April 1st thru June 30th 2015, Academy had 3,647 grades posted, approx. 1,216 a month. This is down from previous months, but still enough to keep some of us busy! However, here are some figures to blow your mind. For the period covering January 1, 2015 – June 30, 2015, we had 8,896 graduates.

In the next issue of this newsletter, there will be a very long list of recipients of the Squadron Awards as well as the SFA annual Staff Awards. I plan on being at the IC in Niagara this year and hope to see many of you there.

Admiral Peg Pellerin, SFA Commandant [email protected] [email protected] 1-888-734-8735 EXT. x705 Happiness is a choice, today I will choose to be happy.

Hello everyone.

Some of you may remember an award I started about

three years ago, called the Cadet Star Award. For

those of you who don't remember, let me refresh

your memories.

Cadets (6 to 18 yrs of age) who take courses from

the college offerings within the Institute of Cadet

Studies must complete a college with Honors &/or

Distinctions. When doing so, they receive a

congratulatory letter from myself as well as a special

certificate and a gold star pin. They can complete as

many colleges as they want, earning more letters,

certificates and pins.

If a cadet completes any college within the Adult

Institutes with Honors and/or Distinctions and only 1

Pass, the cadet will also earn the Cadet Star Award.

Some of the older cadets (13 to 18) have never

attempted the colleges within the adult institutes

because they didn't know they were allowed to. So,

please pass this on to your cadet members.

I do hope with these incentives, that we start seeing

more of our younger members start getting involved

at STARFLEET Academy.

Peg Pellerin

SFA Commandant

CADET STAR AWARDS

6/14/15 Donald Arnold COMM (adult college) 6/21/15 Donald Arnold ROC (adult college) 6/22/15 Donald Arnold SOAC (adult college)

Remember, those of you who direct Cadet

Colleges, that when you have a Cadet who has

fully completed a Cadet College with Honors

and/or Distinctions to let me know so I can send

that Cadet the same Award.

They can earn as many Star awards as there are

Cadet Colleges.

I'd love to see a Cadet weighed down by loads of

star pins!

Nichelle Nichols Suffers Mild Stroke, Star Trek Star Undergoing Testing

Nichelle Nichols has had a rough few days. The Star Trek star, 82, was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, June 3, after

suffering a stroke.

"Last night while at her home in L.A., Nichelle Nichols suffered from a mild stroke," her rep, Zach McGinnis, wrote in a

statement on her official Facebook page.

He continued: "She is currently undergoing testing to determine how severe the stroke was. Please keep her in your thoughts."

The actress-director played Uhura in the TV show Star Trek from 1966 to 1969, and reprised her role in Star Trek: The

Animated Series for one season in 1973. Her film credits also include Star Trek (1979), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982),

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), and Star Trek: The Final Frontier (1989).

The Illinois native recently wrapped films Unbelievable and The White Orchid, which are set to release this year.

Update: StarTrek.com is pleased to report that there's good news regarding the condition of Nichelle Nichols following her

stroke the other day. "Nichelle Nichols has had both a CAT scan and an MRI today," according to a statement posted last night

on her official Facebook page. "The CAT scan came back negative and we are awaiting the results from the MRI. Currently she

is awake, eating, in good spirits and able to have full conversations. Her right side has shown minor signs or mobility loss but

she is not showing any signs of paralyses. We greatly appreciate all of the love and support her fans are showing at this time."

StarTrek.com can reveal that Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience, a brand-new interactive

exhibit which uses the Star Trek franchise as a springboard to teach visitors about science and

technology, witch made its world debut at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum (CASM) in

Ottawa, Canada, on May 26, 2016. Visitors can become Starfleet cadets, attempt to beat the Kobayashi

Maru test and pilot a starship from an active bridge.

“We are very proud to be developing this wonderful exhibition with our partners EMS and CBS

Consumer Products,” said Alex Benay, President and CEO of the Canada Science and Technology

Museums Corporation. “We are certain it will prove to be a ‘must-see’ for the 2016 summer tourists and

locals alike, as well as a wonderful complement to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum’s existing

visitor experiences and offerings on aviation and space travel.”

More specifically, The Starfleet Academy Experience will provide freshly minted cadets with a first-of-its-kind “Trek Tech” immersive experience that takes the student from orientation into a rigorous training program involving simulated science, engineering, medical and command courses, through to graduation, and finally to the deck of an active starship. The experience is enriched with the actual science behind the science fiction of Star Trek as the participants learn about emerging technologies such as a functional tricorder, NASA’s warp drive theory, and the latest experiments with phasers and teleporters. “Star Trek has had a profound influence on many technologies we use today, and the show continues to inspire new technology and science,” said Christoph Rahofer, CEO of EMS Entertainment and pro-ducer of the show. “With Star Trek: The Starfleet Academy Experience, we will present the history of the future and what is envisioned for the future of science and technology.” Visit www.StarfleetAcademyTour.com for the latest schedule and follow hashtag #StarfleetAcademy and @AvSpaceMuseum for more information in the coming months.

We know that Patrick Stewart has several new projects on the horizon. We've been keeping you updated about Blunt Talk, his comedy series for STARZ. We've told you about Hunting Elephants, the actor's comedy-thriller. You're surely aware that he narrates Ted 2. And to that list of enterprises, pardon the pun, let's add The Green Room, which just premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film casts Trek's former Captain Picard against type as, get this, a white supremacist. Here's the official synopsis: "In the harrowing crime thriller The Green Room, a young punk rock band find themselves trapped in a secluded venue after stumbling upon a horrific act of violence, fighting for their lives against a gang of white power skinheads intent on eliminating all witnesses." Stewart plays Darcy, the owner of the venue. And Star Trek fans will be interested to know that the franchise's current Chekov, Anton Yelchin, tackles the role of the punk rock band's bassist. Keep an eye on StarTrek.com for details about The Green Room's theatrical release.

Chinese Building Modeled After the USS

Enterprise From 'Star Trek'

Not to stoke Star Trek-Star Wars rivalry fire, but this is even cooler than the recently unveiled R2-D2

plane. A Chinese gaming and mobile Internet company has built its headquarters in the style of the USS

Enterprise. You can get a good look at the new building from drone-captured footage.

Mashable reports that NetDragon chairman Liu DeJian is such an “uberTrekkie” (uberTrekker?) that he

laid a fat wad of cash ($160 million) to have the building constructed in the ship’s likeness after making

a deal with CBS, which, along with Paramount, owns Trek’s licensing rights. The slick new digs for Net-

Dragon were constructed between 2008 and 2014.

As Mashable points out, the architectural homage becomes more apparent when viewed from an aerial

vantage point on Google Maps.

Of course, there have been multiple iterations of the Enterprise over the years (i.e., the NX-01, the A, the

D, the E, etc.) so it’s debatable which model was the specific reference point for this design. But does it

really matter? This building wins regardless.

Star Trek is a worldwide phenomenon. StarTrek.com occasionally presents theme pieces and interviews featured in Inside Star Trek Magazine, the official Star Trek magazine of Italy. Today, we're pleased to share a recent Inside Star Trek Magazine feature -- written by Gabriella Cordone Lisiero -- that explores how Easter isn't the only event celebrated in Star Trek. The story below had been translated from Italian into English. It doesn’t happen often that the crew of a Star Trek Starship find the time to celebrate holidays, especially thinking that traditions on board are not just human’s (already varied) and to please everyone could be a problem. Sometime, though, you find the time, and on some occasions there is also someone who invents new celebrations!

We already talked about Christmas quite some time ago in ISTM. Surely aboard Captain Kirk’s Enterprise they celebrate the traditional American Thanksgiving Day (as seen in the episode “Charlie X”), even if the turkey is a special one that makes us suppose that in Star Trek future replicators are ... vegetarian! In fact, Kirk orders the galley: “If the crew has to eat synthetic meat, that at least it resembles a turkey!”

In a spirit similar to Thanksgiving Day, the Bajorans have their Gratitude Festival (in the episode “Fascination”), in which the festive and joyous spirit involves all participants, whether they are religious or not. One of the most exciting moments is the opening of the Festival, where the first parchment is burned: “Let all our troubles, written on these scrolls, become ashes.”

The Day of Honor, the traditional celebration that sees a Klingon warrior evaluate the results of the battles of the past year. Accompanied by a beautiful Rokeg blood pie, the celebration is perhaps too harsh for B’Elanna (as seen in the episode “Day of Honor”), who fails to follow the advice of Neelix: “I think traditions are a great thing, and they should be kept alive.”

Completely invented, but now traditional for children aboard the Enterprise-D, is Captain Picard Day (seen in “The Pegasus”), with school competitions that reward those kids who are most able to capture the essence of the man aboard the ship who is the best “Role model!”

Star Trek: The Original Series: Crisis of Consciousness won't be out until April, but StarTrek.com has an exclusive First Look at the cover -- by Alan Dingman -- and details about the adventure, penned by Dave Galanter, whose previous Trek work includes Troublesome Minds and Shadows of the Ignorant. Here's the synposis, direct from Simon & Schuster/Pocket Books.

The crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise is completing a

treaty mission with the Maabas, a peaceful alien

race not native to the star system they currently inhabit,

as descendants of refugees from a great war long ago.

Several hundred thousand Maabas once took shelter on

their new world, and have now been here for millennia.

They do not travel the stars, but seek to explore from

within. The Federation’s interest is in the Maabas’s great

intellectual resources—their science, while behind in

some areas, excels in others, and their philosophy is in

line with that of the Federation. But just as the pact is

signed, the Enterprise is attacked by an unidentified

vessel. Enough force is shown to keep the alien assailants

at bay, but a new danger arises. Their mysterious foes

are the Kenisians—a race that used to inhabit the

The Perth Mint will honor Star Trek with a pair of limited-edition silver commemorative coins, the first in a new collector series set to launch on February 16. The 1-oz. silver proof coins depict Star Trek: The Original Series-era Captain Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701. The reverse of the Kirk coin features a color image of William Shatner as his iconic screen character, while the reverse of the Enterprise coin depicts the United Federation of Planets logo and a color image of the starship flying through space. The inscriptions CAPTAIN JAMES T. KIRK and STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES U.S.S. ENTERPRISE NCC-1701, respectively, complete each design with the Perth Mint's tradi-tional "P" mintmark. The obverse of each coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination and the 2015 year date.

No more than 5,000 of either coin and 1500 of a two-coin set will be issued. Each coin is available individually for $115.00, while the two-coin set, presented in novel, light-up "Transporter" packaging, costs $230. These coins are the first in a planned two-year series of releases. Fans in Australia can purchase the coins at the Perth Mint Shop in East Perth and at leading coin dealers and Australia Post outlets. All fans can purchase them from the Perth Mint online shop.

"Dear Doctor" proved to be lucky #13 for Star Trek: Enterprise. The episode, which aired on January 23, 2002 and was the 13th show of the series, also happened to be amongst season one's best and most ambitious hours and served to develop Doctor Phlox -- lending the character breadth and depth -- perhaps better than any other episode of Enterprise's four-year run. It also, thanks to the first contact with the Valakians, set the stage for what Trek fans commonly know as the Prime Directive. Oddly enough, however, it was also quite problematic for all involved. The initial idea for the episode's denouement was for Phlox to disobey Archer's orders, but UPN brass objected, and the ending was changed so that Phlox not only followed orders, but came to agree with the captain, stating, "I came very close to misjudging Jonathan Archer, but this incident has helped me gain a new respect for him."

Some facts and observations about "Dear Doctor":

The movie the crew screened on movie night? The 1943 version of For Whom The Bell Tolls.

5.65 million viewers watched the episode.

Kellie Waymire, who played the recurring role of Elizabeth Cutler on Enterprise and had also portrayed Lanya in the Voyager episode "Muse," died on November 13, 2003, at the age of 36, succumbing to an undiag nosed cardiac arrhythmia. Her role on Enterprise was not recast and the character was simply not seen again.

What's the common denominator between On Golden Pond, Star Trek: The Original Series and "Dear Doctor"?

Chris Rydell. The actor, who played the Valakian astronaut in the episode, is the son of TOS guest star Joanne Linville (the Romulan Commander in "The Enterprise Incident") and On Golden Pond director Mark Rydell.

Porthos in this episode was played by Prada. The pooch's resume also included the starring role of Lou in the

family comedy Cats & Dogs.

On exploring the character of Doctor Phlox: "Was it really the 13th episode of the show? I somehow thought it was the sixth. So take everything I say with a giant grain of salt. My memory of it was that it was earlier than that probably because I really hadn't had a ton of opportunity to explore the character, but it was 15 years ago, and if you tell a story a thousand times is it really a memory anymore or just a story? But I do know that I'd not had a lot to do before 'Dear Doctor' and that was my first chance to really explore the guy. So I was tickled to have an episode that had some weight to it." On "Dear Doctor's" message: "Obviously, it was a very controversial episode, and I appreciated that because I think that's one of the things that Star Trek was known for in its day, doing episodes that addressed interesting social issues in ways that were potentially controversial." On the ending: "I have a vague memory that I was happier with the original ending. It was more interesting in the sense that it suggested I was not inclined to be an order follower if it went against my conscience. That, I think, was an interesting dynamic to set up potentially for future relationships with the crew, but I understood the reasoning of the network and the producers, that it might have so poisoned the well for the fans in terms of what they thought about me and that, perhaps, it undercut the captain's moral stature, too. So I got the thinking."

The Officer's Formal Mess Dress Uniform was first introduced in Star Trek: Insurrection, and it brought a refreshing departure from the robe-length uniform ensemble formally in use throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation. Now, ANOVOS—utilizing production and screen-used pieces—is gearing up to make high-quality Formal Mess Dress Uni-forms available to fans. To do so, ANOVOS has replicated the two-tone cream and gray waist-length jacket that fea-tures replicated piping and decorative details. Details include:

Waist-length, fitted Mess Dress Tunic constructed from production and screen-used pieces.

ABCya

Welcome to ABCya, a site devoted to bringing great games and interactive learning to kids in Kindergarten to 5th Grade!

The site is brightly colored, warm, and welcoming. And navigation options abound – there’s the search engine at the top of the page, the grade levels on the tree, the featured content, and even featured applications for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod. There’s even a link just for Parents and Teachers.

Want to learn more about the site and how it came to be? Then check out the ABCya Story! I also really lovely that they note what grade level their featured content is for, so that there’s no guessing about whether that activity is appropriate for your child’s grade level. They can just dive right into their category.

Once you start exploring by grade level, you’ll notice that each section has the same categories. They are Letters, Numbers, More, Holiday, and sometimes a Just for Fun grouping.

I thought the games I tried were very cute and educational! Have your kids check them out to-day!

The Most Interesting Man in the World played a red shirt

on Star Trek—and survived!

It sounds like a bit from the Dos Equis commercials, but in this case, it appears to be true. Jonathan Goldsmith, who plays the beer company's Most Interesting Man in the World, appeared in the second episode of the original Star Trek series, "The Corbomite Maneuver." He only appears on screen for a moment, but he also doesn't get a death scene. Joey deVilla, the "Accordion Guy," noted that Goldsmith appeared in the episode, right beside a shirtless Kirk. Memory Alpha confirms that Goldsmith appeared as an unnamed crewman (under the stage name Jonathan Lippe), but hasn't confirmed his appearance in the final episode. If you turn on the episode, though, the man they identify as Goldsmith is right there, working in a corridor right after Kirk performs a few sweaty endurance tests in McCoy's sick bay. Now this isn't exactly news; lots of actors appeared on various Star Trek shows, and Goldsmith didn't even have a speaking role. But it is an excuse to start spinning tall tales about the Most Interesting Red Shirt in the World Federation: • He survived an entire episode of TOS. • He successfully spayed a tribble. • He was kicked off the show for having too much chemistry with Kirk. • The Borg asked to be assimilated by him. • Some crewman look for lovers on Risa. He prefers Vulcan. • When he goes to Ceti Alpha VI, he really goes to Ceti Alpha VI. "I don't always participate in science fiction tropes, but when I do, I prefer to break them. Stay alive, my friends."

The movie takes place in the year 2079. 45 years earlier, Earth was attacked by a hostile and implacable

alien civilization from Alpha Centauri. Force shield domes are put in place to protect cities, and a totalitarian

global military government is established to effect the war and the survival of humans.
