Principal Overview Shihan David Rowley, Principal

I would like to wish everyone all the best for 2016 and thank you all for a great 2015. Thank you to all of you who participated in various events. Without the dedication of all our instructors the academy would not be where it is today. To all the dan belts and brown belts who turn up to the grading’s to either be on the grading panels or participate in the attacks thank you for repeatedly doing a magnificent job.

To all the people behind the scenes who help with organizing the seminars, fund raising and organizing the meals a special thank you for giving up your time including partners, club members and instructors. We realise that you don't ask for recognition but I want to acknowledge your efforts and point out how your tireless work betters our academy.

With the opening of a new branch in the Canberra region along with the Batemans Bay branch being reopened, I can only see the academy going from strength to strength.

It is always good to see and hear from former academy members especially when they make the effort to come to grading’s or attend classes when in the area. South Australia had this happen when Ed and I visited them in 2014 & 2015. Thanks to Craig & Yvette for making Ed & I so welcome at your place.

Thank you James Melhuish, Acicia Trelore and Andrew Stroud for your dedication to the academy in that you travelled over to the black belt grading in Canberra even though there was no one grading from SA. Thank you again for giving up your time and I also remember David Clayton flying over some years back to participate in a grading. Your keenness and dedication never ceases to amaze me.

Ed & I visited the Sunshine Coast branch in November and attended their club night. We participated in a training session, went through the changes made in the syllabus and then had a training day on Saturday where we went through the Hanbo, gun and knife techniques and the rest of the changes in the syllabus. I must say I have never seen a dojo with chandeliers until we arrived at Marks Dojo. All I can say is that the rest of the branches had better start trying to out do Queensland or get a bigger chandelier.

It was great to catch up with everyone in the Queensland club in the dojo and at the barbeque on Saturday night. I would like to thank Mark and his wife for their hospitality.

Congratulations to the new Dan belts whose hard work

resulted in their successful grading to black belt and to Burgy, Kris Arnold and Adam Duke for all the time and effort that you put into preparing them for their grading. I am sure that you are justifiably proud of their success as I am sure they are very grateful for your dedication in their training. Congratulations to Andrew Stroud on your successful regrade and I know all your South Australian instructors and peers are very proud of you. Now that you have graded to black belt your journey begins, not just in your training but your overall development as a club member. There are many important roles to fill within the academy besides training and instructing these include administrative roles and the organization and promotion of our academy in the public sphere. I look forward to any club members becoming more involved according to their interests and abilities in the above mentioned roles.

Congratulations to everyone who was promoted, you will be the last on the old system as the new the guidelines & rules come into effect for 2016.

Its been a year since Frogs passing and I certainly miss him and the phone calls from Red wanting to know where I am or sometimes she would say Frog would ask where is that little b#$*#! I have not heard from him this week. Don't forget to keep Laraine in the loop of what's happening in the academy as she takes a keen interest in all club affairs.

Be master of yourself

A message from our Club Patron

I would like to wish everyone a happy New Year and a healthy one. I would also like to thank all CI's for all their

work and keeping the Peter Morton Academy running. Pete always worried it would fold when he was no longer

around.

I had the pleasure of going down to Batemans Bay on their last night of training before the school holidays. I would

like to thank all the boys for reopening the branch. They had a great number of kids which Ed entertained, about

30 who did not make a sound and took in everything Ed told them.

Congratulations to the three new black belts. It was great catching up with everyone at the black belt dinner.

Thank you to Dave and Ed for all their work and Dave's phone calls making sure I'm not getting into trouble.

I know our Master is watching over everyone so be good, don't mess the techniques up.

Thanks everyone Laraine Morton (Red)

"New challenges" was the theme in Adelaide in 2015, with much praise due to the whole team of instructors. Andrew Stroud and Acacia Tredrea were the most recent black belts in our branch, and oh boy did we put them to use! While allowing some time for Andrew to rehab himself post black belt, he has been wonderfully consistent - along with our faithful brown belts, Paul Garner and Richard Branford - in helping students throughout the year. Acacia volunteered to run a women's self defence course, to which we had a dozen new students come along. Yes, even my mum came along and put me in my place - which made the point for me that (safely) sharing self defence skills with those we care about is an act of loving generosity in itself. While each person's journey of personal growth within the martial arts happens at a different pace, bringing our nearest and dearest along some of the way and empowering them can make it even more meaningful. Our branch has flourished as a family affair, with the Sorgini kids following dad Mark (black belt 1986)'s footsteps. The Hodge, Koh and Wong families also showed that relatives can sometimes play together nicely! Feedback from those attending the seminar was how they liked sampling some other styles - which meant while sticking to our classic jujitsu fundamentals we also mixed things up by occasionally toying with some kickboxing, karate sparring and BJJ drills. We were lucky to have Mark Tomasich briefly visit from Queensland and share some of his favourite content (wrestling and weapons) which was something lower belts especially enjoyed. Late in the year, Craig Swingler organised an aggression-management workshop for nurses and carers which was well received by the 20+ participants. The focus was on non-injurious escape and restraint techniques, as well as situation control and de-escalation. A personal highlight for myself this year was seeing Andrew and Acacia attend a black belt grading 'from the other side of the mats'. After all the hard work they put in to achieving shodan last year, experiencing a black belt grading without the pressure and putting

new candidates through their paces successfully was a great time for both of them. We all hope Caity, Steve and Kit continue to pay it forward and grow Frog's legacy. 2016 will be about encouraging more female members and keeping everyone involved and having fun. Annual seminar is always a highlight on the calendar, and we look forward to seeing many from all over Australia at the next one. In budo, James Melhuish CI Adelaide Cheers and have a great Xmas & New Year!

After many vibrant and successful years the Batemans Bay Club had ceased to operate as part of the Peter Morton Academy in 2014.

It was at Froggy’s funeral that some old Bay members decided to “get the band back together”. We all felt we owed it to the great man.

Meetings were held and some old times were fondly reminisced upon and the rebirth of the club was arranged for the start of 2015.

Peter Fetterplace organised the premises – St Bernards School hall (at mate’s rates). Rod Patrick chased up some mats and equipment (and past members) and worked out things needing to be done. He organised for his wife Di to attend to all the book-keeping and get the essential financial and banking records established. Lesley Apps set up the necessary infrastructure and prepared the items which would be needed week to week. Ashley Connell helped with establishing the proper administration and collecting some old equipment, as well as arranging some publicity in the local press. Peter sent out a newsletter to school students.

So it was that we kicked off in February with Lesley organising “front of house” and our Dad’s Army desperately trying to recall techniques. Fortunately, Rod hadn’t been away for as long as some others and we were very fortunate to have Jess Lord come and help. She is a recent black belt and can still break-fall! We had our first gradings of yellow belts in term 3 with more coming through all the time. The initial group pictured below are now well on their way to orange.

Fortunately we have plenty of instructors helping out with the juniors, with special mention for the assistance of Nicole Smart and Daniel Ostrosko assisting the black belts.

As the first year of the resurgence winds up we now have in excess of 30 juniors and 10 adults and are well and truly back in business. At the time of writing, we are all looking forward to seeing Lorraine at our end of year presentation later this month, followed by some Christmas festivities.

Our award winners are as follows:-

- Most improved girl: Italia Quinlivan

- Most improved boy: Ethan Montgomery

- Best and fairest girl: Jazelle Reidy

- Best and fairest boy: Josh Smart

- Club person of the year: Lesley Apps

We anticipate that 2016 will be a great year.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all at the Bay.

General News

Congratulations to the 2015 Black Belts and also congratulations to all black belts on their promotions this year. Charnwood has maintained a regular number of

students over the year and we now have 8 seniors and

20 Juniors who regularly attend. Many thanks to Renshi

David Dalla Costa, Sensei Jeremy Ascoine, Mrs Debbie

Howard and Mr Jose Arranz who are regular helpers at

both the junior and senior classes. Their help has been

invaluable, as the range of belts increases so does the

need for more instructors. Congratulations to Sensei

Susie Korrel and Josh on the arrival their son “Samson”

on the 20 January 2015. We will be happy to see you

back at Charnwood when you can return.

At the end of 2015, the club received sad news that

Elijah was injured in the Goulburn skydiving accident,

however we are pleased to hear that his recovery is on

track and we look forward to seeing him back in

Canberra as soon as possible. Elijah and his family are

an amazing jujitsu family and we wish them all best

through this journey.

The best way to start a newsletter is to start with a joke:

One Day the Devil challenged the Lord to a Judo tournament. Smiling the Lord proclaimed, "You don't have a chance, I have Kano, Mifune, Kotani, Kimura and all the greatest players up here". "Yes", snickered the Devil, "but I have all the referees."

Juniors

You know what instructing at Erindale is like being a Grandparent, you absolutely love teaching the kids and get a lot out of it (god bless’em) but it’s great to hand the kids back at the end of the night. But the time we have together is definitely quality time, go back fifteen years I would not have tolerated the prospect but 10 years on now at Erindale things are different. I could honestly say I probably prefer teaching kids than smelly adults, they are good value and great satisfaction (Just take a look at the photo below what characters) I don’t want to go through all the individual achievements but they all are great kids and have a great deal to offer, I am a very grateful instructor. I can’t do this without the help of course and I have to give a big shout out to Corey Smith, Andy Fowler and Lauchie Sibbs Sibbley for their assistance (and that’s not because they all have their kids coming by the way) Corey and Andy are good value, great parents and will be very good instructors, Lauchie will be a great instructor, he just needs to stay away from the girls. A very good year for Erindale’ cannot say enough about the talent we have in our club.

Best & Fairest Boy

Seniors

Well I have to say things have slowed down a bit since this year’s Black Belt Grading. It’s nice to stand back and catch a breath and look at the achievements. I really enjoyed being a part of this year’s Black Belt training, I am really proud of the efforts of Kaitlyn, Steve and (Knightrider) Kit, they all performed extremely well on the day which was warm (typical) and there was some tough competition to be had also. So well done to all three, well deserved you are all and will be a credit to the club.

Erindale Renshi David Burgemeister , Chief Instructor

Still on the subject of Black Belt training, this year was the start of two trials which is something the club has not done before. For one we have staggered two Black Belt courses back to back 6 months apart which has proved to be successful. The intention was to make it more feasible, the greater the numbers provide the funds to run the course. It also provided the trainees more selection in competition and this is a benefit to all trainees because they have more sparring partners and Randori opponents. The second trial which was not necessarily planned, was providing (Knightrider) Kit with the opportunity to train by correspondence remotely interstate for the last 6 months of the course. Kit had the opportunity for a promotion with work and it was too good to pass up. So he packed up and moved to Melbourne to start his new job, move closer to family and be close to his new girl (why not). The plan would not have been possible without the talents of Adam Duke who fortunately happened to be living in Melbourne at the time, Adam is an old member of the club who graded for his Black Belt at Batemans Bay many years ago and has also trained at the Evatt Club. So thanks to Adam for putting his hand up to assist Kit continue his training and for partnering Kit on his big day. So this just highlights what a special Club PMAJJK is. The club is evolving and making changes where necessary to improve the way we do things and also accommodate the hectic lifestyles we lead. I just want to congratulate the Big Men Eddie and Rolls for doing a great job of running the club, these changes would not be possible without good leadership, these two guys are willing to listen make changes where necessary and provide some flexibility in the way we train. That’s why we love this Club!!!

Also a big shout out to the South Australian Crew James, Andy and Acacia (Treda), who off their own bat (and coin) flew over to be apart of this year’s Black Belt Grading. Now that’s commitment, good stuff!!

No one threw me this year except for this bloke ‘who is he’.

Anyway just when you thought it was over back to Erindale seniors. As I said before things have slowed down since this year’s Black Belt course, we now have four remaining Black Belt trainees Corey (Smitty) Smith, Lauchie Sibbs Sibbley, Andy (Dirty Bird) Fowler and Eric (the Viking) Rand. We also had one more Leon Seamons but unfortunately for reasons which were beyond his control he had to pull out. All very talented young and not so young men who in twelve months time will provide for a very interesting grading, this will be one to watch! But we also have others in our seniors class who deserve a mention, there is Peter (Goodyear) Dunlop the awesome super foot Tae Kwando expert. Big Al Barry who has legs like tree stumps and strong as an Ox, Both graded to Blue Belt earlier in the year. We also have Corey Smith son Jaydo who is a keen boxer coming up through the belts also, he graded for his senior orange this year too. Special thanks to Krisso Arnold for always being there, helping each week contributing to both the seniors and the Black Belt Class. Congratulations to Kris on receiving your long awaited Second Dan, Well deserved mate you have been instrumental in the development of the last two Black Belt classes amongst many other talents. Thanks to all the parents, fellow instructors and all the kids for a great year.

Merry Christmas and all that!

Cheers Burgy

Evatt Shihan Graham Darby Chief Instructor

We have had a great year at Evatt club, with a full roster of instructors and some great students moving their way through their belt grades. We had more instructors than ever, with Sensei Jeroen Keuter joining us, along with long term club members Sensei's Andrew Ellis and Cormac Farrell. Head of the school was still the one and only Shihan Darby, but he spent a surprising amount of the year gallivanting around Europe and northern Australia.

Our juniors class has seen fluctuating numbers, but under the guidance of Sensei's Jeroen Kueter and Andrew Ellis there has been continual improvement. Most of all, the kids are having fun. Sometimes too much fun, which leads to push-ups, but fun nonetheless. Two of our juniors, Julia and Jakob have successfully graded to their orange and yellow belts, and are looking to power ahead in the new year!

Numbers have been down in the senior class, but the ones left have shown the results of hard work and dedication, even in the face of a popped rib during a recent grading (nice one Nick!). Watching our resident human wrecking ball Eric spar with our blue belt Suranjith was a lot of fun too. Evatt hosted a senior grading in the latter part of the year, allowing people from other clubs to experience the famous Evatt mats, lovingly laid over pre-stressed concrete. Possibly the best way known to confirm that your breakfalls actually work .

With the renewed emphasis on judo randori in the revised syllabus, we decided to introduce this in a fairly systematic way. After a lot of reading up on coaching books and blogs, we did a lot of technical work on break falls in the lead-up to starting randori sessions. Once we started, we gradually introduced throw-for throw before moving on to true free practice, including grip-fighting and transitions to newaza.

The results have been really good – the focus on improving breakfalls paid a significant dividend, with no injuries and students being able to commit to throws more fully. There has been a noticeable improvement in the standard of judo, and most importantly students have been having fun with it. We have also heard the pleas from Shihan Burgemeister and have started introducing a wider range of throws into our sessions. While this doesn’t change the grading standard for each belt, introducing the foot sweeps as entries makes randori a lot more dynamic and attacking. Once we have these skill sets down, we will start teaching them the large collection of dirty tricks that Darbs, Drew and Cormac have amassed over the years.

With a good roster of instructors we are looking to do a major recruitment drive next year, and we are also looking to run a women’s self-defence course. We will unfortunately be losing Erik in the New Year to the Shodan course, but on the upside we are all really looking forward to pummelling him in his grading, and then hopefully welcoming him back as an instructor for 2017.

Gunning Sensei Andrew Wright , Chief Instructor

Happy New Year everyone. Gunning has had a very productive year with added surprises. Juniors: Our junior class has continued to grow in size, numbers and skill, we spent some time focusing on our breakfalls where we have had huge improvement and are starting to get some air on the front and back breakfalls. Our techniques continue to improve and a visit from Ed and Rolls where our students got to enjoy some one to one instruction which was enjoyed by all. We have all enjoyed our end of class games with bulldog and grappling being our top favourites, changed up occasionally with a running the gauntlet with foam swords and kick shields to tying 4 kids together for a human hungry hippos that sends them home very tired.

Seniors: We have had a very busy training year with our seniors. Everyone is progressing in leaps and bounds including improving our judo, grappling and sparring leaving everyone looking very tired at the end of the night. We have been very lucky to have visitors over the last year, Ed and Rolls joined us to grade Ryan (orange) and Darcy (yellow) and share their knowledge with us as well as visits by Cormac Farrell to share his seminar presentation with us and his knowledge. We really appreciate the time and effort you all take to come out to us.

Our big surprise for the year was the safe arrival of our daughter Alanna. Lauren continued to help train right up to July where we took July off. A big thank you go to the members of the Gunning club for their love, support and understanding. Andy

Hughes Shihan Simon MacNab, Chief Instructor

Shihan David Tuckfield

Learning a martial art is indeed a journey. Some leave

the journey at a stage that suits them best, whilst

others continue on, curious to discover where they’ll

arrive. 2015 was a year that saw journeys altered, as

travel, work, injury and competing sports all played

their role.

We started the year with a fresh perspective. Matt and

Sarah were taking the year off, Tuck would only be

around on-and-off, Alex was just starting his Black Belt

training – and we had a heap of new starters. Tricky

logistics ensued, with the additional challenges

presented by an influx of quite young students. With

moving our older-juniors into the senior training slot

things settled down. David, Annalise and Jess

enthusiastically helped with the younger-juniors before

then starting their own class along with the other bigger

kids.

This re-focussed attention to training allowed for

improved technique development, and without doubt

our skill-levels improved as the year progressed. In

September we held a Grading for our Juniors, with six

students being assessed. Rachael, Jess and Tahir

successfully graded to their Yellow Belts, notching the

first milestone in what promises to be long journeys for

them all. The standout memory from this grading was

the smile each of these three held throughout! Also on

that Wednesday night Aaron, Luke and Lucas excelled in

achieving their Orange belts. It could be that we have

future instructors in this group, and only time will tell.

Hughes Primary School held their Extravaganza in

November this year, and Hughes Jujitsu were pleased to

play our part. We’ve been training in our dojo (also

known as the School Hall) since 1978, and accordingly

are very much a part of the School community. In the

mid-afternoon we assembled on the bitumen

quadrangle, and set about showing the locals what we

do on Wednesday nights. With Maca taking the

microphone, Tuck and Alex running things on the mats,

and the crowd doing their bit – assembling, applauding,

smiling and exclaiming in awe as our Students did their

bit. By all accounts our demonstration was the standout

event on the day, with Alex’s tomonage on younger

brother David a sensational feat the crowd won’t forget

anytime soon, nor the expression on Tuck’s face as Alex

whipped through a few vulnerable spots!

In early December Ash travelled to Isabella Plains to

confirm his recollection of all he had learnt, and his

capabilities in application. With Alex partnering him he

represented Hughes Jujitsu well, on a night where quite

a few gradees displayed poor technique, and

accordingly failed. Affirmation that what we’re doing at

Hughes is up to the mark, and that’s what is required to

progress at a club grading. The Christmas games and

party night late in December was enjoyed by everybody,

and the opportunity for parents to mingle and swap

perspectives was welcomed.

In the coming year we’ll be exploring some alternative

approaches to our training, and hope to see a heap of

juniors grade, and possibly also a couple of seniors.

2016 starts 3 February, and 46 weeks later we’ll sit back

and assess just how the year went for Hughes Jujitsu.

Kaleen Shihan Peter Wilson, Chief Instructor

Here we are again at the start of another year. Last year was a very busy one with plenty of students to cater for.

The year did not end up completely incident free, one of our students Elijah Arranz had a horrific accident at Goulburn airfield in late November and was seriously injured when doing a tandem skydive. His instructor was fatally injured in the fall and our thoughts go out to his wife and family.

Elijah is in a Sydney hospital with multiple injuries and we are all praying that he will come through all of this in time and has a good recovery in the near future. Elijah comes from a wonderful family and we wish them well in these rough times.

Though out the year we had good attendance in the junior class which varied between 24 to 38 children on the Thursday training sessions.

The senior class was attended by between 8 to 14 adults per session which sometimes was a bit light on however we seem to get on with it and those that come do enjoy themselves.

The Kaleen branch held the annual junior seminar in March and we had around 40 children attend.

It was a great day plenty of games and some very interesting sessions run by the instructors and I am sure all children and the instructors slept well on the Saturday night. The basic steps trophy was won by the Charnwood branch and they had some good competition from the other branches but old Charny just scraped in to win. The two man attack competition was won by Kaleen’s Ashli Chipperfield who really did an excellent job in defending. Well done to Charnwood branch and Ashli for their efforts on the day.

As usual I would like to thank the many instructors who came to help out for the day and make it a good day for the kids, mind you they enjoy it just as much as the kids. A special thank you to Shihan’s Rowley and Scharrer for your help as well, it’s greatly appreciated.

This year will be the Kaleen branches 24th year since it started, the time has gone fast and hopefully we will continue on well into the future. There have been many children pass through our door over those years and who now bring their own children who come to our classes. It does make one feel as though they are getting on in life at a very fast pace.

Kaleen had our presentation evening on our last night in December for the children. The trophies handed out were for the most improved for the year and those were, Byron Bogan, Alexandra James, Brooklyn Garrido and Shriya Karthir. The chief instructor’s award was won by Luke Sokolovic for the effort he has put in throughout the year. Well done to all of you, you all should be very proud of what you have achieved over the past 12 months.

I certainly missed not having Soke Morton with us this year but I can’t help feeling that he would be watching us from above to make sure we are teaching the techniques properly. The photo of him we have hanging up watches what we are doing and sometimes those eyes of his seem to be looking straight at us.

The last thing I would like to mention is a big thank you to all the people who have helped out during the year at Kaleen that is what makes it a great branch and I know we will have a great 2016.

Everyone have a great year.

Shihan Peter Wilson,

Chief Instructor.

Palmerston Branch Jeroen Kueter, Renshi Chief Instructor

The new Palmerston branch will officially kick off in February 2016. We will be operating out of the Palmerston District Public School every Tuesday night (6.30-7.30 Juniors, 6.30-8.00 Seniors) and will follow the ACT school term calendar. It will be the first branch in the Gungahlin area. The nearest branches are Evatt on Wednesdays, and Kaleen on Thursdays. The decision to launch a new branch came after I relocated my family to the northern most part of Canberra, along with the rest of the migrating and growing population of Canberra. Gungahlin is the fastest growing area in Canberra being responsible for 71 per cent of the total growth in the territory last year. Nearby suburb Crace was noted as the fastest growing suburb in Australia in 2013-14. So there is a great opportunity to develop a long term presence in the area. We may be a bit late to the party as there are already a number of martial arts clubs in the area. We will however be claiming the reputation as one of the oldest established martial arts clubs in the Canberra region. Finding a suitable venue was a real challenge and I started looking in early October. I discovered that the local schools are very organised with all their available out-of-school time booked for next year already. I’d like to thank Peter Wilson for providing the contact at Palmerston Primary School; the Business Manager being the wife of Sensei Campbell of Kaleen branch. The school has been overly accommodating and helpful. We have already started advertising to recruit new members. The school has allowed us to place an ad in the school newsletter and we have started distributing flyers. We have also created a Facebook page for the branch (www.facebook.com/PMAJJKPalmerston) and will place a listing in the local community website (www.mygungahlin.com.au) that will promote the club to its network (via email, and 8000+ Facebook subscribers). Please visit and Like our Facebook page to spread the word! I’d like to thank Shihan Rowley and Scharrer for their continued support. Also a big thank you to Shihan Darby for his inspiration and mentoring, and for making me welcome to the Evatt branch where I have been training this year. Jeroen Kueter, Renshi

Phillip(Kambah)Branch

Sensei Naomi Scamp , Chief Instructor

Term 4 2015 saw the creation of a new juniors branch of the PMAJJK in Kambah.

Soke Peter Morton would be proud that, following the teaching of some ‘safe ways to fall’ to the school Under 8’s soccer team, interest in our martial arts sparked a near immediate increase in numbers at the ever-popular Kaleen branch. Much to the amusement of Shihan’s Wilson and Owers, I began a weekly taxi service to Kaleen from Weston Creek, with a number of new recruits. This was short lived, as no sooner had my 7 seater reached capacity Shihan Owers suggested I start my own branch and “stop bringing him more kids to train”. And so Kambah branch was created! On our opening afternoon, I had the pleasure of welcoming 10 new students to our Academy! Along with my original 2 starters at Kaleen, Fynn (half yellow) and Levi (yellow). After some 20 years of assisting at Kaleen, the first couple of sessions on my own seemed like a lot of talking and not much action, as I explained everything from bowing to breakfalls in detail. However by half way through the term, we started to get the basics sorted so the real fun could begin. We enjoyed our first term and celebrated the end of year with a few games, including the headgear and inflatable swords. Despite the loud noise this group quickly realised that they don’t hurt at all. I would like to congratulate Lucas Samaras for his ‘excellence in breakfalls’ and Joel Crispe on receiving the ‘Etiquette award’ this year. I would like to thank Tracey and Peter Askew for providing a nice premises for me to start this branch, along with my most senior students (junior yellow!) Fynn Clode and Levi Scamp for their patience helping out - often in the absence of any instructors! Finally a big thank you to the ever popular Renshi Scamp for turning up when work would allow and inspiring the class - I think head stand, hand stand and full flip might be a regular request in your presence! In 2016 our branch will move to a full-time Dojo in Phillip -Phillip Branch – Monday evenings 5-6pm juniors 7-14years, Level 1, ‘Phillip Court’ is the building name, come upstairs. Dojo is at the top of the stairs on the right. If any instructors are able to help out we would be very grateful. Sensei Nim

Queanbeyan Branch Scott Teys Chief Instructor

The Queanbeyan branch had a pretty steady year with

numbers remaining the same throughout the year.

The most exciting thing we did was host the national

seminar. This year we decided to hold the event down

at Batemans Bay at the Coach House. The Coach House

was a great spot to have the seminar as everyone got to

spend more time socialising and getting to know people

from other branches and having a few laughs.

I would like to thank everyone who helped out with

everything from admin, laying the mats to cutting up

fruit…. And everyone who ran a session.

I would also like to congratulate Abby Daly

(Queanbeyan) for winning the Two Man Attack

competition and the Eddies crew for winning the Basic

Steps competition. Hopefully Queanbeyan will get to go

one better at the 2016 seminar.

St Edmunds Deputy Principal PMAJJK Inc. Shihan Edward Scharrer, Chief Instructor

Kudan Black Belt

The theme for this year is definitely “Quality not Quantity”

While our numbers are not large, we continue to achieve high standards. In particular two events this year will highlight the fact.

Caitlin and Kit successfully graded to Shodan on the 28th November 2015. Both displayed a determined spirit and stayed on the front foot all day to achieve their goal. Congratulation to both of you. It is well deserved.

Caitlin’s journey to this level, I guess in some ways reflects her character, quiet and unassuming, but in true martial spirit of never say die, she continued to turn up each week and methodically ticked off all the milestones. Grading’s for her were always a bit stressful but she always remained focused and determined to give it everything she had on the day and always came up trumps. Caitlin now enjoys the accolade of being the first female to grade to Shodan through the St Edmunds branch and will be a great asset to the club as a whole.

Kit’s journey to this level was quite the opposite. A man of obvious martial talents both physically and mentally, he was pegged by all instructors that saw him train as definite Black Belt material. He won the two man attack trophy when he was on Yellow belt and probably contributed in many ways towards our Branch success in the Kata competitions. A test of his dedication came this year when he told me that he was being transferred to Melbourne, just 6 months out from the grading date. Luckily I managed to arrange for him to train with Renshi Adam Duke who had also recently transferred to Melbourne. Kit trained at Gyms for fitness and boxing, another Judo club and each week with Adam to hone his techniques. Kit accepts all the accolades with humble humility, even shrugging them off as just another day at the office. To this end he has earned much respect and will also be a tremendous asset to the club.

At the National Seminar held at the Bay this year, our small group of Kit, Pat, Petra and I once again reigned supreme in winning the Kata competition. Personally I thought that winner would come from either Erindale or Kaleen branches as their Kata demonstration was of a very high standard.

Our juniors continue to progress well with all successfully grading to their next level. With particular note, Lucia has applied herself well and has improved remarkably since her first night.

As a training extra for my students, I’ve been running some classes of Japanese Kobudo Weaponry after our regular classes on Wednesday. These involve the learning of several stick and sword arts of the 4 foot staff (Jo) and wooden sword (Bokken).

I’d like to thank my students for their continued attendance, to Sensei Caitlyn and Sensei Kit for all of their support in teaching. They have done a fine job this year. Also thanks to Alex and James from Queanbeyan who have attended for most of the year as their second training night but also helped out with coaching when required. Finally I’d like to thank Renshi Adam for partnering Kit for the last 6 months Shodan training and also on his grading day.

I wish everyone as prosperous and successful 2016!

The sun broke to a fine day…. 250C today … beauty! You could not have ordered better weather. I drove into the Forrest Motel to pick up Sensei’s James, Andrew and Acacia who had come over from Adelaide especially for the grading. Arriving at the Erindale Dojo we all greeted each other in calm excitement in expectation of what lay ahead in the day.

Around the mat Shihan Burgy made the obligatory announcements of responsibilities for the day. The three trainees Caitlin, Kit and Steve looked on, outwardly calm, inwardly excited nervousness. “Your graders today are Shihan’s Rowley, Scharrer, Darby, Teys and Renshi Ramsden. First aid attendant is Shihan Darby. Toilets and drinks; downstairs. Many thanks to the Adelaide travellers. Any injuries?”

Like a starter’s gun, the final bow of Reiho elicited the warm up exercises. We’re off! Now the adrenalin can be converted into energy.

The day proceeded with the protagonists being ushered through the syllabus by Burgy. Graders ever vigilant offered some resistance with requests of “Once again please”. Even the gradees chimed in with requests of repeating techniques they were dissatisfied with.

Methodically each technique was executed. Ready! … Punch …. Throw …. BANG! …. Stand up to guard. Like clockwork figures performing a dance of attack and defence the gradees performed their techniques in synchronicity.

About two hours later the techniques were done. Now we have the kumite (competition/combat) section.

Judo. Grab … move … snap throw … Bang, Yes! … again … move to throw, Foiled! Damn … Stretch to throw … no good …only a takedown. Grapple!! Gotchya! … Roll over … hold broken …!

Two against one section resembled fight scenes of the old style Batman episodes without the animated graphics. PAFF! BIING! BOOM! BANG! SLAP! CRASH! A jumping side kick to an attacker bending him double! Yep you got ‘im! Tap out! Go again … and again … and again!!

The combatants separate with bows of respect.

An eerie calmness falls for the last section. Boxing Defence! The one section where gradees come unstuck. The one section where fitness gets you through. The one section where anything can happen.

Adrenalin is coursing through the body. Eyes wide. Hearts pounding. Palms sweating.

Righto who’s up first … ! Burgy calmly gives both combatants instructions on the rules. HAJIME!. Bodies collide with the first takedown and a tap out. The Boxer comes back and lands several blows, a failed takedown, the defender is breathing heavy now but one last effort and the boxer is wrapped up and tapped out. NEXT! BING! BOOM! CRASH! TAPOUT! WHOA Round kick to body SMAAACK!!! Wrap up and Tap out. Go Again! The boxer makes a comeback and is punishing the defender, Takedown no good, the boxer escapes! The defender is severely fatigued and struggles off the mat. The 10 Second call from the Ref!! The knees go in … TIME!!

The Graders retire to the next room to begin their deliberations and after a brief chat with each gradee we all reconvene around the mat to announce the results. Shihan Rowley begins his address with thanks to all attackers, trainers and grading instructors. “And the final results are as follow …” Shihan Rowley deliberately pauses to increase the dramatic tension. The seconds tick past … All eyes turn to fix their gaze upon him. The gradees inhale and stop breathing …..

“…. You all passed!” Collective sighs of relief from across the mat as the gradees begin to breathe again, giving congratulatory high fives to each other. The tears of joy begin to roll as the grading party walk across the mat and begin to congratulate the new Shodan’s in turn.

The evening party at the Southern Cross club was a relaxed and enjoyable event with smiles all round. Our honoured guest Laraine Morton, Patron of the Academy was present to witness proceedings and said to Rolls and I that Frog would be proud to see the new crop of Shodan’s coming through. She even commended me on the high standard of my calligraphy work on the certificates.

With dinner over with, it was time for the speeches and gifts of thanks and acknowledgement of everyone’s contribution to the day and the last 18 months. Then came time to ceremoniously present the new Shodan’s with their hard earned belt and certificate. Casting off their brown belts as a symbol that their novice years are now over, I tied on their Black Belt and welcomed them to the ranks of true students to the Peter Morton Academy of Judo Jujitsu Karate.

Congratulations Sensei’s Caitlin, Kit and Steven!
